Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment delves into the concepts of Global Information Systems (Global IS), expert systems, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The solution explores how websites function as Global IS, facilitating information sharing and feedback across the globe. It examines the role of expert systems as competitive tools, highlighting their ability to emulate human expertise and support decision-making, even in the absence of the human expert. Additionally, the assignment defines GIS, explaining its function in capturing, storing, and displaying spatial data to provide insights into geographic patterns. The assignment references relevant sources to support the analysis and understanding of these technological concepts.

Lecture 9 and 10
1. Is every website a form of global IS? Why or why not?
Global IS or Global Information System is one of the systems which cater individuals and
business organization across the world. Yes, every website is a form of Global Information
System as different individuals from different nations could use a website. Websites and
blogs provide ample information to individuals and organizations use them for sharing
information and exchanging feedback. People can use the websites in obtaining information
and providing feedback and for the purpose of self-expression and self-opinion. People can
access most of the websites from anywhere with the support of the internet which make
websites a Global IS.
2. What is the purpose of an expert system? How can it serve as a
competitive tool?
The expert system emulates the human expert's knowledge in solving problems and
supporting the decision-making process in narrow domains. An expert system serves as a
competitive tool as expertise is a highly competitive asset and could be used by any business
organization. With the help of software, any business could continue with the expert system
even in the absence of the expert. Neural networks are the components of the expert system
which make it a competitive tool. The expert system is the computer program which works
like human brains. It learns from different situations and it is able to come up with new norms
in the base of knowledge which could be used in addressing several events which have not
been considered during its development (Rouse, 2019).

3. What is a geographic information system (GIS)? What purpose
does it serve?
Geographic Information System or GIS is one of the computer systems which is used in
capturing, checking, storing and displaying data and information with respect to different
positions on the surface of the earth. It is a computer-based tool which analyses, manipulates,
visualizes, and stores geographic information with the use of a map. The purpose of GIS is to
come up with a basic understanding of data and functionality of the system. It also provides
information on the spatial patterns (Wieczorek & Delmerico, 2009).
