How Can We Live Free
The word ‘Freedom’ has different meanings for different people and cultures (Stallman,
2009). For me, freedom is about to live free, by respecting people for their rights of a free living.
People should not ignore the rights of others whom we live in our society. I think we cannot do
what we want by ignoring others. We must be careful for the rights of others similarly we care
about our rights. This could help us to live with freedom in society.
Some people think that freedom is related to getting some rights and to give some rights
to others. Freedom is about to do what we want and to restrict what we don’t want to do (Markus
& Schwartz, 2010). Some people think that freedom is about making our choices for political
leaders. There is nothing a universal definition of what is freedom itself? In this essay, I focus on
the concept of freedom by considering its different meaning in life.
According to my experience, we can live freely by doing something that is beneficial for
us, but also beneficial for the others around us. It could help all people to have their chances to
grow and live with freedom. The word freedom has different meanings like freedom of
expression, economic freedom, freedom of religion etc. Here in this essay, we are mainly
concerned with the freedom of all things in the life of people to live a better life.
Freedom depends on an individual’s understanding of life under certain limits (Cohen,
2013). I agree with the statement that freedom is about having the right to speak and to do what a
person wants. On the other side, it is about to provide freedom to others for their rights. In
different countries all people are not allowed equal rights, either in the workplace, in the
education institutions, or in the social setup. People are not allowed to freely express themselves
in the public. For example, African-Americans have issues in the society for their rights.

In another way, freedom is about to make our choices freely. In this way the meaning of
freedom is easy to understand. It depends on our economic situation, our purchasing power, and
social status, and our political influence. People can use their financial strength to purchase
freely, they can make their decisions or choices freely for their political representatives, and they
can change their lifestyle when they want. In this way, freedom of an individual may affect
others in the society. So, we should be very careful to make our decisions as others can benefit or
harm from our freedom.
Freedom is also relevant to start our financial or income sources (Degryse & Ongena,
2008). People can start their business when they want. They can do what they inspire or they
have experience. They are financially independent as they can sell what they have, what they
manufacture, and what they have ready to sell. In the free market economy, there is a perfect
competition among firms. Anyone can enter or exit from the market. All buyers and suppliers are
free for their business decisions. They have very limited control over the price of identical
products or services. In this way, freedom is about financial wellness.
Another aspect related to freedom is the freedom of expression. It is about saying ‘no’ if
someone is not agreed with the decisions like political decisions, financial matters, critical
aspects related to social aspects, and decisions about the family matters etc. In all such situations,
freedom of expression means people can say what they have in their mind. They can argue and
express freely without any pressure. It is about having a more conversational and argumentative
environment where people are not only saying ‘yes’ but they have the option to say ‘no’ if they
are not satisfying.

I have another point of view about freedom. I think freedom is about the actions of
individuals who do not need to ask them “why?” and people can just do what they love. In this
way, freedom is the absence of limits and we can do what we feel better for us. We can go where
we like, we can smell, eat, and we can use what we love. This is about freedom of personal
choices. I think this is the real freedom, but we should just be careful about the freedom of others
in our circle. It is highly important that we care for others for their freedom of personal choices.
In conclusion, freedom is about anything we love to do either for our personal desires, our
financial needs, our political affiliations, and our social preferences.
