CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW
2.1: Factors that influence or link with growing mental health issues of employees.
2.1.1 Mental health issue
In accordance with Sidhu and et.al., (2020) globally there are 264 million people who are
suffering from the mental illness in the company and that is why, it is consider one of the leading
cause of disability where many people actually suffering from anxiety. Thus, it is also analyzed
that work is good for mental health but negative working environment is actually lead to create
physical and mental health problems as well. That is why, depression and anxiety have their own
significant economic impact and it is estimated that around million of the people lost their job
because of suffering from the mental health issue. On the other side, Neupane and et.al., (2020)
argued that the major increment of the health issue is due to negative working environment and
discrimination within the working area. Not only this, risk of mental health also includes the
inadequate health and safety policies, poor communication and management practices which
affect the overall working environment in negative manner.
Thisted and et.al., (2020) stated their views in their study such that mental health disorder
are consider the most burdensome health concern for the country. Not only mental illness, but
the employees are also suffer from the physical health issue as well. On the other side, most of
them are also facing issue with behavioral health issue as well which leads to cause negative
impact upon them. Further, the depression and anxiety is also affect the job performance and
productivity level of the company in negative manner. Thus, it is necessary for the company to
make sure that the working environment of the company should not lead to increase the mental
illness of the employees.
2.1.2 Factor affecting the mental illness within a business
According to Booker and et.al., (2018) there are various factors that leads to cause mental
health of employees and that is why, it is essential for the companies to make sure that the
employees are in stable condition because there is a direct condition of job stress and working
environment of the firm. The foremost reason of the growing mental illness is increase workload
such that out of 20 every 7 employees feel frustrated with the increase workload issues and this
Document Page
in turn raise mental illness as well. While on the other side, Dean and et.al. (2017) argued that
with many employees wants to do the best job they can but still they are feeling an obligation to
try and complete all the work assigned. In the employer’s perspective, it is not common to
perform the work and that is why it is important to find a balance between the delivering the best
results and then wellbeing of the staff as well. That is why, only employers of the top company
take out a solution and also get best results accordingly.
In addition to this, it is also analyzed by Drake, Meara and Bond (2020) that there is a
financial concern is another cause that leads to grow the mental illness at work. Such that these
financial stress level also cause the staff to potentially turn to unhealthy substances to try and
also deal with these situations. Also, if company did not pay good amount to their employees as
per the capabilities then this will cause to negative impact upon the health especially cause to
grow mental illness. Further, if company also did not provide adequate health and safety policies
then it may also consider as another issue that cause negative impact upon the health. For
example, Hilton is the top company which actually provide range of services and it is the duty of
thee employers to make sure that they provide effective tools and equipment to their employees
so that they feel like they are also an important person for the company. As it is clear by
Extremera and et.al. (2020) that unemployment is consider one of the well- recognized risk
factor for mental health problems and getting work is protective. That is why, a negative working
environment is consider one of the most effective factor that leads to cause physical and mental
health problems.
On the other side, it is also critically evaluated by Greiner Nolan and Hogan (2018) that
inflexible working hours are also consider an important factor that is associated with growing
mental health issues and as a result, most of the employees leave their jobs because it affect their
personal as well as professional life in opposite manner. Further, there are many companies who
takes lots of steps in order to manage their working culture so that it will not cause any negative
impact upon their performance. While on the other side, it is also analyzed byHarvey and et.al.
(2017) poor communication and management practice may also affect the overall performance as
well as leads to cause negative impact upon their mental health too. Along with this, risk is also
related to the job content like use of unsuitable task for the person’s competencies that creates
frustration among employees and as a result, they make wrong decision as well. For instance,

employee of Hilton have a skill to complete the task, but they may have too few resources and
that time, there may be an unsupportive managerial practice affect the business and cause
negative impact upon the employee mental health too.
Further, these unclear task and organizational objectives will also leads to cause negative
impact upon the employee performance and also includes the risk of mental health as well. This
is also supported by Imo (2017) that there are some jobs which may carry a higher personal risk
as compared to other and it may also lead to impact upon the mental health and thus cause a
symptoms off mental disorders as well. Also, these risk may sometimes develop from lack of
team cohesion and social support too. So, it is analyzed that these external factors also support to
grow the mental illness of employees and directly affect their working performance too. So,
Orchard and et.al. (2020) also present their views that career development is also consider
another issue that support to cause the negative impact upon the human mind. Such that if an
individual finds career uncertainty, career stagnation then they start thinking that there is no
career development opportunities available in the company and as a result, they switch from
another jobs. But somehow, it also cause negative impact their overall mind and leads to affect
their working environment as well.
Booker and et.al., (2018) stated that mental illness at the workplace will definitely affect
the overall working environment and due to having high stress of the workload, company did not
handle the situation that is why, it is necessary for the company to manage the work in order to
deal with the complex situation of the company. This effective management strategies will also
assist to meet the define aim because metal illness may interfere the employee’s ability to
function at work or they may effect the entire work in negative manner as well. Such that
employee do not concentrate on the work and this may leads to wrong results as well. That is
why, many psychologist also state that there is a need to change the things within the working
environment so that it will not creates any negative impact upon the company’s performance.
On the other side, Imo (2017) argued that if any employee working in the company face
any mental illness then they should make sure that management should develop strategies that
help to get rid out of depression among employees and this in turn affect the overall business in
negative manner. Thus, depression is the mental health disorder which also affect the overall
employee performance in negative manner. WHO survey results also shows that this is one of the
Document Page
most common illness that affect the overall performance of the employee in negative manner.
Like, it impair the judgment and cloud decision making process as well. Therefore, it is
necessary for the company to manage the thing in such an effective manner so that it will help to
creates positive impact upon the business and also meet the define aim as well.
According to Abu Amuna and et.al., (2017) one key to success and growth for almost
every company is their workers, individual who obtain work done and on time. It is general
understand that having right employees at workplace can aid organizations to move in right
direction they want it to. With skilled and talented applicants in companies management is able
to beat their competitors in effective manner and gain competitive advantages within specific
sector. When seniors build strong relation with their workers they can drive them towards
achieving set aims and objectives of business. There are many sources accessible in corporate
world that can use used by leaders and managers to motivate their staff. But on the other side
some factors are also available that impact on mental abilities of individual negatively which
makes them ill. Use of power in inappropriate manner is considered as one of the biggest factors
or issue that influence growing mental health problems of workers. When management use their
decision making power ineffective manner and take judgment base on age, gender and sex
differences it create negative environment around work areas and allow individual labor to feel
discriminated that directly impact on their metal as well as physical abilities. Misuses of any
power that can relate to employees straightly affect productivity and performance level. It can
hurt workers morale, cause high employee turnover and some commit suicide because they are
unable to handle situation and face this type of discrimination at management side. It increase
stress level of applicants rather than before and put pressure on them to change job which is the
best option for them.
2.1.3 Model related to management
In accordance with the view of de Graaf (2019) there are many management theory
which is clearly stated that there is a need to manage the employees performance and their
working within a firm. This is possible only when the managers of the company have an
effective leadership and management style. Among all, Behavioral management theory which
is also known as human relation movement because it address the human dimension of work.
Also, this theory believed that a better understanding of a human behavior at work like,
Document Page
motivation, conflict and expectation that helps to improve the mental illness among people and
this in turn assist to increase the performance as well. Therefore, it is also stated that through this
approach the company’s manager consist of manipulating the environment in such a way that
helps to change the behavior of the customer without affecting their position.
Holland (2016) argued that this theory not only related to the human behavior of the
employees but it is also related to motivation. That is why, most of the managers of a firm uses
this theory in order to motivate the employees so that they will motivate the employees and also
analyze their basic needs. In order to support the same, Dalle Grave and Calugi (2018) stated that
by using Maslow Motivational theory, employers of the company should make sure that they
provide all the basic need of employees in order to make sure that they are comfortable within
the business area. So, through the model it will be easy for the company to manage the things in
better manner and also analyze the behavioral response as well as environmental determinants.
So that the company’s employees are not leads towards the mental illness because there is a
strong connection between the mind and behavior. If the mind is relax then the behavior of the
employees is also positive, on the other side, it there is a negative working environment then it
leads to affect the mentality of employees which in turn leads to create mental illness. That is
why, this theory is used to determine the behavior of the employees, as it is concerned with
observable stimulus- response behavior through interaction within an environment.
Kaiser, Hubley and Dimidjian (2016) explain their views that this theory assist to learn
about human behavior because there are many employees within a workplace and that is why,
every employee behave in different manner. So to cope up with this problem, company uses this
theory, as it concerned with the observable and measurable aspects of a human behavior. Also, it
helps to address the human interaction at work and understand the human action, which in turn
leads to increase the productivity. As in UK, most of the company faces issue with regards to
mental illness and that is why, there is a need to understand the behavior of human being so that
it managers and leaders assign the work accordingly.
McHuron and et.al., (2017) argued that many times without understanding the ability of
an employee, manager and leader assign the work which is not in favor and this in turn affect the
results of productivity. In order to cope up with such issue, there is a need to adopt a theory
which help to analyze whether the working environment of the company is suitable for the firm

or not. As a result, it will lead to increase the performance level of a business and provide
positive working environment within a firm which in turn leads to promote employees to involve
in the company’s task. As, behavior theory is also allow for inclusion of cognitive process as
well as feeling which in turn assist to shape the behavior of employees and decrease the level of
stress as well. Hence, through this, company is able to promote the employee performance and
this in turn enhance the overall performance of the company so that it leads a business towards
positive direction.
On the other side, as per the Henry- Fayol 14 Principle of management, it is analyzed that
generally manager of the company do not use scientific approach of management. That is why,
Fayol provide a broad and analytical framework of process of administration that help to
determine the actual performance of the company. Thus, through these14 principle of
management which is given by H. Fayol mainly focused on the management function of a firm
and also applied in various companies as well. These are as mention below:
Initiative: Under this, Ramakrishna (2019) stated that the company should initiate the
level of freedom and also provide employees to carry out the plans without forcing them. This
assist to make themselves comfortable within a workspaces and motivate them to help the team
in order to meet the define aim and objectives. As a result, through this principle of management,
company satisfy the employees.

the help of hierarchy, the flow of communication is proper and it also assist to determine the

there must be n hard and fast rule with regards to the process of communication through the
scaler chain.
Remuneration of personnel: It is the basic rule of management which state that company
should provide monetary and non- monetary form of remuneration to the employees which is
based upon their performance level. That is why, Fayol also focused more on non- monetary
Document Page

create a positive impact upon the health as well. Hence, remuneration must be fair, reasonable
and satisfactory.
Unity of Direction: In order to coordinate the entire team or department in better manner,
there must be a single manager who provide proper direction. It is so because, with the help of
single person dealing, employee easily determine their goals and this in turn assist to share the
rules and regulation in better manner.

and respectful so that they will understand the clarity of rules and other important rules and
regulation of a business (Adeagbo, Mohammed and Abdulkadir, 2019). This in turn assist the
company as well as employees to be happy within a premises and assist the team to meet the
define aim as well.
Division of Work: It refers to the division of a work on the basis of employee’s ability
because it will help to make the worker more efficient and effective. Also, if management assign
the roles and responsibility as per the capability of an employee then it will be beneficial for
employees to help manager and team which in turn assist to smooth functioning of a business as
well.
Authority and Responsibility: Management of the company should make sure that they
perform the work on the basis of ability. Thus, authority is a right to give a command and make
decision, while responsibility is the obligation of a worker to perform the designated task. Hence,
company should make sure that authority without any responsibility may lead to waste the
position and it will also lead to poor utilization of a human resource (Godwin and et.al., 2017).
That is why, there is a need to make sure that company’s manager assign duty as per the need in
order to balance between authority and responsibility.
Unity of Command: in a company, there must be a command of a supervisor and also, an
employee should be accountable to the immediate supervisor only. Thus, it will help to clear the
confusion and will make an employee loyal as well.
Document Page
Subordination of individual interest to general interest: As there are two type of interest
i.e. individual interest and organizational interest. Hence, manager should ensure that there must
be harmony between these two interests but organizational interest should be given more priority
so that it increase the employee interest. Thus, company should be make sure that assigning roles
without interest of an employees will leads to affect the mental illness and this directly affect the
production level of a firm in negative manner.
Centralization: It is the top most level of authority who has a power to make important
decision for a company. Therefore, there must be a delegation of power to the subordinate but
the power is in one hand. This will help to lead a business and manage the operations in better
manner as well.
Order: This principle state that resource should be given a proper place in a firm and
company should hire right man for the smooth running of a business. On the other side,
Mahindru and et.al., (2018) stated that if the company is not able to meet the define aim and this
in turn affect the overall business in negative manner as well.
Stability of tenure: It is analyzed by Ramakrishna (2019) that an employee can perform
the work only if they have a secured job, that is why, there is a need to provide job security
because it is beneficial for the company as well as for employee. Such that it lower down staff
turnover and the cost of recruiting and training new employees as well.
Esprit de Corps: It refers to the Union is strength, like a company should make a team
which help to meet the define goal and objectives. It is so because when the person is working in
a team then, he learn many more new things and this in turn help to improve the overall
performance in a positive manner as well. That is why, it creates a positive impact upon the
health of an employee which in turn assist to meet the define aim and objectives.
So, it is stated that to provide positive working environment within a working place,
management plays an important role in the success of a business. That is why, different models
and theories are applied by the firm in order to meet the define aim and objective. Goetzel and
et.al., (2018) also support their views by stating that work is good for mental health but a
negative working environment can lead to affect the mental health in negative manner. But on
the other hand, by applying the theory and promote better mental health for different employees,

company is able to manage the work and also sustain the brand image at international level as
well.
2.2: Impact of the factors upon employee and business performance
2.2.1 Impact of factor upon the employee performance
In the opinion of Modini and et.al. (2016) Excessive workload is creates negative impact
upon business and employee performance such that large workloads can in turn cause high level
of stress and this affect the normal routine life of the employees as well. As a result, it cause
negative impact upon their performance as well and this also cause to increase the level of tress
and mental problems. Moreover, it is also analyzed that many hard work employees may easily
attain at a given period but on the other side, when there is a late nights work and extra pressure
provided by the employers side, then it leads to affect the overall performance of the employees
and also this could lead to higher level of absenteeism, accidents and lack of concentration
towards a work.
Orchard and et.al., (2020) present their views that an employee’s is completely influence
their mood and performance through company’s working environment and that is why, it is
essential for the company to provide a supportive and comfortable working environment to their
employees. As work environment also consider a cause that leads to grow the mental health of
the employee, so work atmosphere is built on the principles of cooperation’s, healthy
competition and empathy. As a result, it will help to motivate their students and creates a positive
impact upon the working environment as well. Moreover, through negative working
environment, company’s employees and business itself affected in negative manner. That is why,
it is necessary for them to make sure that they promote values so that they will not loose their
employees and teamwork too. It is so because a healthy and happy employee only help a
company to improve their overall performance and meet the overall objective of the firm too by
avoiding procrastinating.
Booker and et.al., (2018) stated that inflexible working hours are consider another reason
for the growing mental health and this is also creates negative impact upon the employee
performance such that if company did not provide flexible working hours facilities to their
company’s employees that it affect the employee turnover and lesser productivity of the
Document Page
company as well. So, author also stated that if company have effective flexibility working hours
then it promote the employees and also facilitate the work life balance as well. Further, this
system have both positive and negative impact but the company have to take decision as per the
need so that it may not create any negative impact upon the business performance. On the other
side, poor communication and management practice are also consider another issue that may
affect the overall business. It is further supported by Dean and et.al., (2017) that if company did
not provide proper health and safety working equipment to their employers then it will cause
negative impact upon the business performance, because employees did not ready to take steps
and this in turn affect the overall productivity off the firm as well. Along with this, if the
employees have specific capabilities then, manager and employers have to make sure that they
assigned the roles as per the abilities and ensure about proper communication as well. That is
why, it is necessary for them to make sure that there must be effective communication method
use and best management practices are taken in order to make better decision for the company.
Extremera and et.al. (2020) present their view in their study that if the company have
skilled labor force then they should make sure that they provide the best facilities which in turn
assist to make sure that they provide positive working environment to their employees for the
better performance. In the same way, World Health Organization report stated that depression
and anxiety alone cost the higher global economy due to lost in productivity. Therefore, this
shows that majority of the company’s is facing mental illness within their business premises and
that is why, there is a need to overcome this problem. On the other side, Booker and et.al., (2018)
stated that id employee is not happy with its mental health then it affect their performance level
because it lacks its concentration and that is why, it affect the performance in negative manner.
On the other side, mental illness not only creates negative impact upon employee
performance but it also affect the company’s performance in adverse manner such that it anxiety
and depression affect the employee performance. If employees of the company did not perform
well, then company’s performance is also decline and as a result, they cannot be sustain the
brand image at international level. Also, the possibility of staying ahead in the competition is
also decreases and this is a sign of decline stage. That is why, no company wants to hire those
employee who affect the business performance and facing any mental illness with regards to
Document Page
personal or professional behavior. Hence, using best strategy, manager of the company should
sort out the problem and try to encourage them in order to grab further opportunities.
As per the model of performance, it is stated that most of the company uses different
ways to improve the employee performance and management also organize new session which in
turn assist to meet the define aim. Krupa, Sabetti and Lysaght (2019) present their views and
stated that company use reward system, incentives and different non- monetary benefit which
help to improve the employee performance and divert their mind to attain the define aim. This is
possible only when the employee are physically and mentally fit, that is why, manager should
use the performance management process which comply with different stages in order to meet
the define aim. For instance, company’s manager may take a feedback in order to understand
whether the employees are happy with the job or not and they are able to meet the meet the
define aim or not. Thus, through this management process, company is able to identify the
approached which is used to analyze the actual situation of the employees.
It is really very important for management to take care of their workers needs and satisfy
them by offering services accordingly that increase productivity level much better than before.
But due to some internal and external factors workers as well as business performance get
affected that affect negatively. Certain elements directly put negative impact on mental abilities
of staff and decrease motivational level. Shah, Jan and Ullah, (2019) stated that gender
discrimination is one of the most affecting factor that creative negative environment around areas
where number of people are working together for achieving objectives and goals of companies.
This factor describes situation in which employees are treated by their management differently
because of female or male more than on basis of their individual abilities and skills. Gender
discrimination at workplace impact performance and productivity of labor as well as company
that is not appropriate for their long term success within market place. When women applicants
feel discriminated at work area they decide to switch job and make complaints against
management through court. It put negative impact on brand image in market or decreases their
consumer’s base. This factor takes several forms most obvious being difference is earnings
between women and men doing same sort of work. Even where there is subtler types of
inequality that may be show from male obtaining plum report to promotion to sex of workers
recruited for traditionally women jobs. Without taking appropriate action and developing

strategies organizations are unable to overcome it which affects sales and profitability. It is
important to consider all these factors and take action as soon as possible.
2.2.2 Impact of factor upon the business performance
According to Thisted and et.al., (2020) mental illness and its factor also creates negative
impact upon the business performance such that due to this, there will be increase in absenteeism
and this in turn lead to affect the productivity and profit of the firm in negative manner. So,
financially, there is a huge impact of the mental illness among business performance because it
leads to affect the overall productivity level of the company in negative manner which in turn
creates to huge loss for the firm as well. Through the secondary data it is analyzed that in UK
from 2009 to 2013, majority of the people are admitted in the hospital with the issue of mental
illness and most of them are also resigned from their post because of excessive workload. This is
due to inflation rate in the country which cause negative impact upon the working environment.
Also, Jindo and et.al., (2020) argued that with the sudden increase the mental illness, there is a
huge loss of the company and it is estimated around £8.5 billion approx. Thus, it is clearly stated
that company faces a huge amount because company has to replacing the staff and this in turn
affect the overall cost of the firm in negative manner as well. As a result, most of the company
faces huge financial loss within a firm as well.
Research also suggested that psychological well-being is directly related to the
performance and that is why, there is a need to recognize the link between the mental illness and
workplace productivity because this issue have direct impact upon the staff turnover and
reputation. So, it is analyzed that with the changing environment, company need to analyze the
factor which cause negative impact upon the business and further there is a need to recognize the
signs as well as symptoms to determine the support which they needed. Fordjour Chan and
Fordjour (2020) stated that employees are the pillar of the company and that is why, company
should develop the strategy which assist to overcome from the mental illness and this help to
creates positive impact upon the business performance as well.
Van der Brempt and et.al., (2017) stated that mental illness is the leading cause of
disability and also untreated mental illness also cause severe emotional and physical health
problem. That is why, it affect both employee performance as well as business performance. It is
so because depression is also lead to affect the mental health of business and that is why, it affect

the profitability as well as productivity of the company in negative manner. As around 7% of the
total population is affected from the depression and mental illness within a business and that is
why, it is necessary for the firm to take better action in order to meet the define aim and increase
the overall performance of the company as well.
Doran and Kinchin (2019) share their views and stated that there are many ways through
which company enhance their own performance, but if the firm do not have sufficient employees
then it is not possible for the company to meet the define aim. That is why, it is stated that mental
illness of an employee affect the performance of company in negative manner. For that, Hilton
also recruit the best employees who able to meet the define aim within a specified time frame
and this in turn affect the result in positive manner. On the other side, Roy, Lysaght and Krupa
(2017) argued that when the company have excessive workload then it is not easy to handle the
work in easy manner. At that time, manager of the company has to set the policies and positive
working environment which assist to meet the define aim and objectives in better manner. For
example, manager should realize the dimension of an employee and this in turn affect the overall
performance in positive manner. Like, provide them extra monetary benefit so that they enhance
the performance and this in turn leads to create a direct impact upon the business performance as
well. Apparently, at a workplace the behavioral engagement and expected outcome are actually
interrelated with each other, while on the other side, comprehensive overlap between both the
construct which affect the overall performance of the company in negative manner. That is why,
manager should analyze the performance of employee and this in turn assist to take better
decision for future as well.
It is further analyzed by Godwin and et.al., (2017) that with negative working
environment and poor work performance of a business, company is not able to manage the
performance level of company in better manner and this in turn affect the relationship in opposite
manner as well. That is why, as per the key performance indicator it is analyzed that every
business should run in effective manner and through effective indicators, there is a need to
manage the business performance. For that, Hilton may also use some standards which in turn
assist to manage the overall performance of the company in positive manner. Such that it may
use Benchmarking as a performance measurement tool which in turn assist to determine the
actual performance of the company which may affect the define goal. Through this, company is
Document Page
also able to analyze the productivity level by setting the standard which is attain by the firm or
not. Doran and Kinchin (2019) argued that with the help of effective performance management
tool, it is easy to analyze the performance of an organization, but it is not possible to determine
the behavior of employees and that is why, company has to look after the model and strategies
which in turn assist company to meet the define aim.
This shows that there is a direct relationship with the metal illness and business
performance and that is why, company has to make sure that if mental health issue are left
untreated because employees do not recognize the signs and symptoms. Than company should
offer free screening tools which assist workers to assess their risk factors and also recognize the
issues as well. This in turn assist the company to cope up with the challenges and provide a
healthy and positive working place to workers as well.
2.3: Challenges faced by management while coping up the factors that leads to mental illness
2.3.1 Challenges
According to O'Sullivan and et.al., (2019) building effective workforce at workplace and
increasing productivity of workers is the main accountability of management for which they had
to take right techniques or ways beneficial for business as well. Administration within companies
is responsible for managing business and employee’s performance. They take decision according
to situations in business and workplace environment that affect candidate’s abilities. High
workload, working environment and misuse of power are the factors that affect mental ability of
staff, it also consider as cause of mental illness. It is health conditions including changes in
thinking, feeling, emotion and behavior of workers while working with wide organization for
gaining competitive benefits. High workload put pressure on employees to work with specific
time duration and completed their day to day activities appropriately. Some people quite job
because of this environment and some of them continuously perform their role but they get
affected and get ill.
It is essential for management to cope up with all factors that leads to mental illness of
employees at workplace because it impact on business performance as well as sales negatively
and create barriers to become a global leader within particular market where competitors are
already available. But while taking any action and implementing plans administration face

several challenges. Mazzei, Flynn and Haynie (2016) discussed that without collaboration and
communication nothing is possible to accomplish in business environment because it requires
effective interaction between workers and management. Lack of coordination is one of the
challenges faced by management that impact on reducing mental illness of staff. It complicates
overall situation and procedure, decrease productivity and delay completion of work that is not
good for any firm. Coordination aid to increase profitability and morale of workers and decrease
conflicts at workplace that directly impact on staff mental abilities and make them ill or may be
changes their behavior towards leaders and managers. It assures smooth working of business and
enhances motivational level of individual. But without this element change implementation and
management is impossible. Lack of coordination delay work, reduce performance level and
demotivated applicants effectively. It increase mental illness of workers rather than before and
change their thinking or way of work. Along with this challenge, poor communication between
senior and their juniors will also influence manager actions or procedure that they can take to
cope up with factors lead to mental illness.
On the other hand, Hayes (2018) highlighted that management within company decide
what need to be done by whom and how are accountable for completing tasks on timely manner.
In context of coping up with factors that may lead mental illness, manager take decision but
while creating any plan for situation and implementing it in workplace they face several
challenges. In today's world, not everyone's thinking is the same. However, the thing has its own
way of handling, due to which it is quite possible to wipe it on one result. When management
comes up with measures to remove or cope up mental illness, different thinking and opinion
cause many problems in wiping final outcomes. It creates conflict between manager and its
workers to select which one is better than other. This type of challenge always bring barriers for
implementing change or considering one suggest that may be effective and appropriate for
situation which in return eliminate mental illness in candidates due to varied factors at
workplace.
Many people in companies are accountable for taking right decision and actions that may
work to solve issues but due to differences between their thinking and ways to react regarding
any situation does not allow them to cope up with problems. Also it makes the circumstance
worst and more complicated than before. An opinion and suggestion is a common term

describing written or oral views of management and other individual with respect to mental
illness of workers because of factors that affect performance and workplace environment
negatively. It is necessary to cope up elements that leads difficult situation but this conflict or
challenge influence in negative manner. Mental illness or problems among workers has serious
consequences not only for them but also for their family members as they can harm themselves
and other as well. Due to this circumstance employee absenteeism will increase more and more
that directly impact brand reputation and position as apposite to their business rivals who are
operating in same industry since for so long with strong consumer base and workforce. It also
maximize high staff turnover that is not suitable for organizations as it makes them unable to
serve target market. All these things happen due to differences between opinions, thinking and
point of views. Mentally ill employees are unable to work for long and they take decision to
change their job. In many cases, they attempt suicide and take meditation to overcome this
situation that is really very significant for them as well as their family who lives with individual
and spent time more than co-workers or friends.
According to Shujahat and et.al., (2019) when management do not respond effectively,
when leaders are not directing their team appropriately or put pressure on them to work will
cause mental illness at workplace that creates negative atmosphere around work areas and
decrease productivity of individual. In additional, psychological harassment and bullying is
another reason which make applicant ill mentally or physically and reduce their abilities to
accomplish day to day tasks appropriately. It is illegal act according to law and government takes
legal action against those people who do this. To deal with this issue management within
business sector will take better judgment or develop strategies to reduce mental illness. There are
some challenges occur during this process and restrict manager to perform effectively.
Lack of planning and direction is challenge face by administration that affects overall
performance in negative manner. Without developing good plan it is not possible to cope up
factors that lead mental illness. Planning for implementing solution is important and beneficial
for companies in term of increasing productivity, morale of staff and sales rather than
competitors in market place. It cater data or essential info to top administration which they can
use to take effective decision about how to improve mental illness of employees and how to
motivate them in a way that will make them able to retain with business for long. With effective

plan management is able to eliminate each factor and its impact at workplace and drive workers
towards feeling comfortable while working with company. But lack of planning destroys each
and everything, it negatively impact on decision making process.
2.3.2 Benefits of controlling the factor of mental illness
In the view of McHuron and et.al., (2017) mental health plays an important role in the
success of the company and that is why, there is a need to improve the mental health because it
reflect their productivity. For example, in Hilton which employees are mentally resilient to stress
workflow, decision making then they generate better relationship at workplace which in turn
assist to sustain the long term relationship as well. Thus, it is stated that by controlling the factor
of mental illness, company is able to meet provide happy and positive working environment
within a workplace. As it is clearly identified that having a mental illness within a working
environment which increase absenteeism and negative impact upon the productivity and profit.
Thus, manage the issue or factor will lead to enhance the employee morale and as a result, they
contribute to 100% towards the working performance as well.
On the other side, it is also analyzed that people who deal with mental health, then they
are not easily cope up with the problem, on contrary if an employee is happy and even the
management of the company also help them in order to meet the define aim. Thus, it is analyzed
that people who experience anxiety at work are less likely to experience job satisfaction and vice
versa. For example, people who are mentally fit in the company, are ready to accept any
challenges and this in turn assist the company to accomplish the define aim within a specified
time frame as well. Neupane and et.al., (2020) also supported that hiring and training employees
can cost thousands of dollars and not to mention the time commitment involved. This also help
the company to improve the productivity and boost the performance level of the company as
well.
In addition to this, Mazzei, Flynn and Haynie (2016) also present their views that if
management of the company is well specified and provide direction to their employees then it
will be beneficial for the organization to lead proper flow of communication. As it is analyzed
that it is the challenge which the company face and as a result, it leads to affect the mental illness
of the people as well. That is why, there is a need to improve the mental illness within a firm so
that it will be easy for the company to deal with the mental issues at workplace. Also, dealing

with negativity is another way that help to create collaboration and enhance the team working
abilities among them which in turn leads to creative mind, also meet the define goal of the firm
as well. So, workplace that promote mental health and also support the mental disorder ate more
likely to reduce absenteeism, increase productivity which directly benefit the company in
positive manner. Hence, it is stated that by reducing the workload which will support the staff to
manage the work and increase the performance of a company as well.
2.3.3 Effective ways to address the problem.
Thus, to overcome from such problem, there is a need to minimized the issue so that the
employees are easily manage the things which in turn affect the positive impact upon the
organization’s performance. That is why, Shah, Jan and Ullah, (2019) suggested that by
implementing the health and safety policy or practices is consider the best way to manage the
mental illness because these laws provide an safe zone to the employees and a well- being
strategy which also covers prevention, early identification and support. Thus, it is stated that with
the help of laws and policies, company is easily manage the mental illness. Further, company’s
manger should also support the people who are suffering from the mental disorder, because with
direct communication with the employees will lead to manage the work and take a business at
further level of success. Such that research also shows that it is the responsibility of an
organization in order to support the individual with mental illness.
On the other side, Goetzel and et.al., (2018) stated that manager of the company should
be supportive so that they will manage the physical as well as mental illness of people. Also, the
leadership style of the manager should be strong enough that will help to manage various issues.
It is so because by creating a supportive environment, company is able to manage issue of
employees and also encourage positive mental health as well. For instance, by arranging mental
health awareness training and workshops will assist the company to meet the define aim. Booker
and et.al., (2018) present their views and state that in order to deal with unstable employee,
company has to manage the some session through they will understand the situation, where
employees talk about any problem which they are suffering. In this way, company is able to cope
up with the issue and also meet the define aim by improving the mental illness among their
employees.

Krupa, Sabetti and Lysaght (2019) present their views that by encouraging employees for
their active participation and decision making within a firm is also consider the best way that
help to cope up mental illness. It is so because supporting employees’ effort will also help the
company to take out from stress and anxiety. Such that most of the employees are not hesitate to
take time off and did not easily share their issue, but it is the duty of the manager of company to
keep involving in decision making which in turn assist to meet the define aim and objectives.
Also, it leads to enhance the working performance of employees in positive manner too. Goetzel
and et.al., (2018) argued that it is not the only way, but Hilton should discuss the mental health in
the workplace and this assist to solve the problem without any hesitation. For that company need
to educate manager about the signs of mental health problem and also train them in order to
respond appropriately.so, it is stated that with the help of proper conversation between employee
and manager, the mental illness among employee is reduce up to some level and also encourage
to get help as well.
