MEMO READING
It has been seen that globally, lack of interest, attention, irrelevance and distractions affect interpersonal
communications at workplaces. Moreover, the skills of reflection, clarification and active listening can
increase effective communication.
I have used secondary research using journal articles of different authors and completed the review of
factors that generates impact on communication process in recent workplaces across different
organizations.
There are various barriers to communication in a workplace, but effective communication at the workplace
is essential for an organization as it helps in increasing efficiency and productivity of that firm.
This paper will discuss the factors that creates impact on communication process at various workplaces.
It will further focus on the barriers of communication skills to overcome the barriers.
Three factors impacting on communication in today’s workplace
Due to the diversity at workplaces, the need for effective communication is quite significant.
Internal factors: A style of leadership, attitude poor timing and conflict can affect communication
process. The workplace that uses dictatorship or authoritative pattern of leadership usually faces poor
communication. It sometimes happens that the receiver of the message is unwilling to receive the message
and this will create issue for effective communication to take place. Those Workplaces seems to be a
problem, where there is a lack of proper terms of the subordinates and superior communication.
External factors: Level of competition, the economy of the country, availability of technology and the
nation's political stability are the factors which affects the communication practices. Oetzel, (2017) stated

that the environment which has less competition makes the management and workers less aggressive and
reluctant in their obligation. Moreover, in a country having a good economy, people usually listens and
follows the correct channels of communication.
"It's about communication. It's about honesty. It's about treating people in the organization as deserving
to know the facts. You don't try to give them half the story. You don't try to hide the story. You treat them
as-as true equals, and you communicate, and you communicate and communicate. (Louis and Gerstner,
2019)
Environment factors According to Martin and Nakayama, (2015) the environment of the organization is
built with factors which affect the system of communication. Personal factors of a person, which bring
visual problems by hampering the message and auditory factors are included in these factors. Visual
factors include the angle of viewing, visibility, weather conditions, lightning, and distance. Auditory
factors includes distance among the receivers and senders, echoing or noise. I think a good example that
can be presented is that people face trouble in communicating when they are operating in an environment
full of sound. Individual factors includes inadequate preparation or ventilation.
“Collaboration is a key part of the success of any organization, executed through a clearly defined vision
and mission and based on transparency and constant communication” (Pariwal, 2019)
The paper shows that various factors generate on impact communication, but effective communication is
very vital for executing business process of an organization.
It is evident from the above discussions that communication is important, and it must be properly managed
if the workplace has to be successful. Upon understanding the factors that can affect communication in the
workplace, it is now possible to take measures for counteracting and making the communication effective.
