A takeaway message from this presentation is that economic disparities, including

health of the people, and awareness creation on this issue through social media is a necessity

Aha Moment
My aha moment in this video is the knowledge that about 82% of all indigenous adults
living in Canada were found to be overweight or obese because of food insecurity (Food
Injustice, 2020). This proportion is significantly large as food secure individuals have fewer
healthy choices (such as fruits and vegetables).
Research shows that food insecurity comprises the inability to purchase healthy and
adequate food or being unable to sustain a healthy lifestyle (Schroeder & Smaldone, 2015).
From this video, it is evident that food insecurity can lead to adverse health outcomes,
including obesity, cancer, and diabetes. Thus, in my future nursing practice and leadership
roles, I will need to conduct more research on how to influence policy to minimize food
insecurity in all populations. Also, I will need to create awareness in collaboration with
nutritionists on how to tackle the lack of financial means.
Video 2: Racism in Healthcare (Group name: Florence Forgive Me)
Take Away Message
My take away message is that racism continues to be prevalent in Canadian healthcare,
and it impacts the health outcomes of minorities, including the Aboriginal people.

My aha moment is the realization that even some health care providers can have racist
actions towards their clients in hospital settings that hinder proper care (Julie, 2020).
The understanding of such inequalities in health care experienced by non-white
individuals living in Canada has made me realize that reducing racial inequities in health care
is significant to improve health outcomes in people. Reasons such as reluctance to seek health
care in a setting where discrimination and judgment, and delayed diagnosis because of ethnic
background (Julie, 2020) impede health care achievement for all. One of the patients says,
and I quote;
“…you are not treated as well as the white people that come in and native …just seem
to be turned away…” (Julie, 2020)
Thus, during my nursing and leadership practice in the future, I must advocate for
change in the health care system Some of the changes I would advocate for are diversification
of the health care workforce to reflect the demographic profile of the patient population
(Williams & Cooper, 2019). I would also raise awareness just like the video did of the
pervasive nature of the injustices in health, besides support other initiatives that address such
inequities (Williams & Cooper, 2019).
