Factors causing women remain in Destructive relationships 1
What causes women repetitively involve in the destructive relationships?
A relationship is called destructive or abusive when a person whether male or female enters
into a relationship which deters his or her well-being and growth because of the harsh
behaviour of the other person towards them. In today’s time, it is being commonly observed
that women are consistently becoming the victims of destructive relationships because of
extremely male-dominated and low women-empowered societies. The low status of women
in the society does not allow them to raise voice against the violence and abusive treatments
caused to them by their partners or family members (Ross & Catherine, 2017) . Even if
women try to gather some courage to take actions against the abuses that they face
repetitively in their routine lives, they are threatened or violently punished from the counter
parts for those actions.
Further, women have to face pressure from both internal as well as external environment
when even think of taking actions against the abusive and violent practices on part of their
husbands or partners. The emotions and feelings of women let them forget and forgive their
partners for the harsh behaviour and actions (Antony & Louise, 2018). There is a wide range
of reasons that cause the women to repetitively become the part of abusive relations.
Woman’s concern about their family and her own social image restricts her to take
appropriate actions against the men who are consistently hurting them physically or
emotionally. For example, an innocent girl who is maintaining relationship with a man,
trusting him blindly, finds that her partner is actually not being loyal with her. Rather, the
mere purpose of him being in the relationship is to take sexual advantage of the girl. In such
case she might feel unwilling to disclose about abusive practices of her partner.
Furthermore, women lack sufficient degree of confidence to oppose their partners or family
members who spoils them violently, due to their low self-esteem as they are not well-

educated about their rights and value in the society. Also, the financial insecurity or
dependence of a woman on her man keeps her trapped in the abusive relations (Miller &
Baker, 2012). For instance, a woman who is financially dependent upon her family or her
spouse would not be able to leave them because of her financial instability even when she is
facing intense violence from her family. The lack of proper education regarding the ways to
protest the dominating males of the societies gives men undue advantage of assaulting the
women for their personal benefits
At times, families of various girls do not allow them to raise their voice against the domestic
violence faced by the woman as they fear that it will impede their dignity and social image.
Due to these reasons women faces lack of support from their families to overcome their
destructive relationships. In is often found that women get into the abusive relationships on a
loop where they exit one wrong relation and enters into a new one in the search of love and
support. Moreover, women who have the history of abusive relations have the tendency of
accepting the situation as it is after a breakeven point as they start feeling inordinate about the
ill-practices like sexual assaults, domestic violence and they tend to mould themselves
according to the circumstances (LaViolette, Alyce & Barnett, 2013).
