This video focuses on fake news and how the circulation of fake news can be avoided.
Tom Cheshire, a correspondent, identifies that fake news is spread rapidly due to social
media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Google. He also expresses his awe at how
fake news picks up such a potent momentum and spreads like wildfire. Moreover, even
though individuals do not have to rely on newspapers for their daily dose of information
anymore, fakes news can now be spread to a wide group of people, obstructing their view of
the truth. One of the reasons that fake news is spreading rapidly is that many users generate
revenue from the click bait. Thus, the modern world has become a platform where lies and
the truth are easily interchangeable. In fact, one of the reasons for Hilary Clinton’s loss in the
presidential race is fake news. Furthermore, there is a debate where one correspondent
believes that fake news is a threat to the democratic procedure where another believes that
there are more critical problems that exist. Additionally, even though it is difficult to filter out
the fake news from the real ones, platforms like Facebook are now seeking ways to scrutinize
the content that is being uploaded. This phenomenon would dramatically reduce if
mainstream journalists start pursuing this issue seriously. Thus, in order to combat this
societal menace, good, investigative journalism needs to be restored (YouTube, 2019).
