Fall Risk Management
Introduction
Fall risk and injuries cases are common for the nursing practitioners, but these challenges are
very critical to the life of a patient and so on for the nurses. Every person associated with the
patient handling need to hold effective training to handle the fall risk and injuries, and they
are supposed to reduce the chances of fall with effective care and practices. As I walked into
the Mr Jones’ room I found him lay on the floor of bathroom with some injury on his head.
This was a very critical situation for me but my nursing practices and skills helped me to
handle it effectively because I used “STAR” method to handle it.
Situation
Firstly I helped Mr Jones to sit over the bed because he fallen on floor, with an injury on the
head I examined the entire situation because fall can cause many issues in a patient. Mr Jones
is admitted in the hospital for 5 days having a case history of Arthralgia, related to pain in
knees. This was caused due to a danger accident before 4 years and presently he was in
hospital for a knee transplant surgery. This fall was very risky for him hence I found myself
responsible as Mr Jones avoided to take help of nurses to walk also he ignored the use of
patient handling device this lead the imbalance and a head injury.
Task
Primary task I such cases for a nurse is to examine the entire situation and patient’s physical
presentation to assure any visible and invisible injury. I manage to know that he had no
invisible injury. My task was to make the patient comfortable and to provide immediate
required treatment from the doctors.

Fall Risk Management
At first, I managed to comfort the patient with carefully laying on the bed, after I manage
inspection of his body. I cleaned his head and bandaged the injury to reduce the flowing
blood. To handle it I called the resident doctors and helped them to provide immediate first
aid requirements. Patient injury found critical due to his joint-pain issues, another action I
took to investigate the responsible nurse in entire situation.
Result
Mr Jones was not habitual of taking assistance, and he thought to prove himself fit hence he
walked to bathroom. Unfortunately he fall and got injured, aged patient have high risk of fall
due to weakness and inability maintain their body working ,hence hospitals used patient
handling devices to reduce the patients falls. After the medical aid and immediate response,
Mr Jones recovered but this can be critical if he had a invisible injury. Managing the
coordination among the nurses found weak and I plan to work upon this as well.
Conclusion
Based on above discussion this essay concludes that role of nursing practitioners for safe
patient handling face many issues and these issues are harmful for patient’s health and
nursing carrier both. Hence, effective co-ordination and significant practice of using the
patient handling device can help nurses to reduce such risks.
