1CHALLENGING CONVERATIONS
Chapter – 48
Working with Family Members Who Appear Hostile
This chapter tells the readers about the various methods of working with those
members of the family who appear hostile to each other.
“Diversity may be an issue when someone who appears hostile is expressing him or
herself in ways that may be appropriate in their culture.”
The author talks about the issue of diversity and how it causes problems when an
hostile individual tries to express himself or herself. The author explains in the article about
how such difficulties prevents the teachers from talking to the parents. The chapter also
stresses on the importance on the self-reflection among the parents and the teachers which
might help to solve the situation.
I feel that this line has been rightly said by the author as it is true that diversity indeed
causes a lot of problems for the people since are not able to control themselves. This is the
reason why I agree with the problems of working with the people who are hot-headed
themselves.
Chapter – 49
Talking with Families about Behaviour Changes
This chapter urges the readers to think about how a teacher can talk with the parents
regarding the change in the behaviour of the children which is changing. This chapter is
considered to be particularly important because it will allow both the teachers and the parents
to understand the reasons behind their children having behaviour changes in the school or in
their homes. That is why, this chapter is considered to be important.

2CHALLENGING CONVERATIONS
“If you can see a child under stress, do you really need to know why?”
It is in this chapter that the author argues about trying to find out the reasons behind a
child undergoing changes in their behaviour at home or in school. The chapter tells the
readers that understanding the problems of the child might be helpful for him/her.
I feel that this sentence is important for the readers because of the fact that if the
parents deserve to know the cause of their problems from the children, then it will be possible
for them to understand the problems the children are facing. That is why I agree with this
statement itself.
Chapter – 50
Families for Abuse or Neglect
This chapter is equally important for the readers because it allows them to understand
the problems which are being faced by the families burdened with neglect or abuse. The
chapter explains to the readers why the families in the world had to face the problems of
abuse or neglect. The chapter discusses what the teachers need to help the children facing
abuse and neglect in the families.
“It may seem that abuse and self-neglect happen only among low-income families but
that’s not true”.
It is seen in this chapter that the author had focused on the self-neglect is one of the
bigger issues which causes a child to indulge in criminal activities. Another factor which the
author of the chapter has pointed out is the fact that the lack of anger management skills
among the family also can lead to the children of the family suffering from abuse. Hence, it is
important for the teachers to report any cases of abuse faced by the children in homes or at
the schools.

3CHALLENGING CONVERATIONS
I completely agree with this fact because of abuse and self-neglect can happen in
families with all kinds of incomes. It is not only limited to the low-income families. Abuse
can affect the behaviour of the children. Therefore, the children should be protected from the
cases of abuse.
Chapter – 47
Working with Parents who Constantly Complain
This chapter tells the readers about the problems that the teachers have to face when
working with complaining parents. It is often seen that the patents are complaining about
their children not receiving the benefits in the schools. The chapter provides information on
how the teachers should control such parents.
“Worries about safety were high on the list”
In this chapter, the author has provided the reasons why the parents are complaining.
The main reason is the fact that sometimes, the parents might be worried that the children are
not safe in the schools, which make them complain about the safety of the child. Another
reason is the fact that the parents think the children are not being looked after by their
teachers.
This line is important because of the fact that it provides the readers information about
the reason the parents are worried about the safety of the children itself. Hence, it is important
that the teachers convince the parents that their children are safe and are being well looked
after in the schools.
