1IMPORTANCE OF FOOD SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainable food is that food that is generally produced without any kind of harmful
chemicals and pesticides. Sustainable food is in mostly healthy and safe for consumption and it
can be seen that nutrition has a major role in defining the concept of sustainable food in recent
times (Drewnowski, 2017). Major focus has been given on the development of sustainable food
in order to ensure there is reduction in food waste, sustainable agriculture and also healthy
consumption of food by the people to gain a healthy lifestyle. The Food Sustainability Index has
been conducting research globally on aspects like agriculture, food waste and nutrition across
various countries in order to highlight the best practices and also the primary areas where there is
room for improvement.
I believe that the focus on the development of sustainable food is highly important not
only in terms of health but also for various social as well as economic factors. Sustainable food
helps in avoiding food borne diseases that can have detrimental impacts on health (Augustin et
al, 2016). Health is one of the most important factors that ensure that people can do their daily
activities that are required for their survival.
According to me the focus on sustainable development also helps in the social and the
economic development. There are many people who are unemployed and live in poverty.
Focusing on sustainable food will help in increasing employment opportunities so that they can
attain a proper standard of living. There are many environmental issues that is becoming a global
concern and according to scholars, sustainable farms help in encouraging biodiversity, create
healthy soils and ensure water is conserved (Macdiarmid, Douglas & Campbell, 2016). These
help in curbing the environmental impacts as well that is equally important for the balance in the
ecosystem.

2IMPORTANCE OF FOOD SUSTAINABILITY
Sustainable food consumption is highly important for the people and is in huge demand
and focus on the production will increase the sales of the food and will encourage more people to
produce sustainable food that will contribute to the economy of the market. It will also help and
contribute to the growth of the farmers which is highly important.
In order to ensure that food is developed sustainable it is highly important to emphasize
and focus on research and development. I think that proper research will help in gaining insights
about sustainable food and will also help in coming up with proper techniques and measures that
will help in developing sustainable food in an easier manner as well as in abundance.
I think that sustainable development of food and research and development in this area is
highly important because of the health benefits that helps in ensuring the quality of life of people
and also helps in eradicating various other issues like social, economic and environmental that is
extremely important in the sustainable growth and development of a country and pave way for a
healthy and a more sustainable environment in general.
