Farnsworth House: Visual Representation Project & Design Techniques

This project showcases the visual representation of the Farnsworth House through a site plan, floor plan, elevation, and sections. The site plan, at a 1:200 scale, provides a bird's eye view of the surrounding landscape, including buildings, ponds, and a river. The floor plan, at 1:100 scale, details the interior architectural layout, including walls, windows, furnishings, and partitions, with labeled architectural scripts and section cut markers. Sections of the Farnsworth House, along with an elevation drawing, are presented adjacent to the floor plan for clarity. The sections include short and long axes views, highlighting building features like interior windows, stone masonry, RCC slab, and parapet walls. An NTS key plan provides information on the road, nearby landmarks, land information, and the site address. The elevation drawing captures the house within its landscape, featuring trees and a pond, emphasizing the pleasant views from the Farnsworth House, a one-room weekend retreat constructed with glass and main walls for security.

Visual Representation of Farnsworth House
The architectural plan for a Farnsworth house is represented in the form of a site plan,
floor plan, elevation and sections. The site plan is represented in a 1:200 scale on the A3 sheet,
where the whole sites’ area is displayed in a bird’s eye view. The landscape elements
surrounding the site are represented. There are various buildings, ponds and river in the
surrounding of the site. The site plan is represented with respect to the north direction. Moreover,
no internal architectural information are not represented in the site plan.
Then moving further, the Floor Plan is represented at a scale of 1:100. The floor plan is
also represented with the north direction. The floor plan has represented the interior architecture
layout of the building along with the walls, windows, furnishings and partitions. On the other
hand, apart from the interior representation, the adjacent structures or the details of the landscape
are not represented. The application of plan elements are showed along with the application’s
line weight, line type and hatching are represented. Then, the section cut marker is also shown on
the plan. The architectural script are labeled. The floor plan contain the following areas:
1) Living room
2) Bedroom
3) Kitchen
4) Bathroom and water closet
5) Backyard
The interiors are furnished with the basic furnishings such as the sofa, stove, fridge and
sitting arrangement and plants in the backyard.
Next, the Section of the Farnsworth House and the Elevation Drawing of the Farnsworth
House are represented adjacent to the floor plan, for a clear understanding. When compared to
the Site plan, the floor plan, sections and the elevation are done based on 1:100 scale. Basically
two sections are presented, i.e., short and long axes sections of the interior layout. The first and
the short axes section shows the significant building features like interior window, size stone
masonry, RCC slab, parapet walls, lintels and the cross section of the window. The other section
is the long axes section which shows the veranda, windows, RCC slab, parapet walls, lintels and
the size stone masonry. The section cuts are indicated. The NTS key plan is also represented next

to the section of the Farnworth house, where the NTS key plan denotes the information of the
road, nearby landmark, land information and the site number (i.e., the address of the site).
As mentioned earlier, the elevation is represented in a scale of 1:100 scale. The partition
wall is of 1.15 centimeter and Brunt Brick Masonry (BBM) is indicated with 0.3 centimeter.The
Elevation is captured with the Farnworth house’s landscape surroundings such as the trees and
the pond.
Therefore, the developed Farnsworth house has a beautiful view of the river, pond and
greenery in its surrounding, which creates a pleasant view for the people who use the Farnsworth
house. The Farnsworth house is a one-room weekend retreat, which contains the rural setting
and it is constituted with the materials like glass and main walls, especially for the security
purpose.
