We are fully in the swing of things now. I am impressed with many of your reactions and
responses to the course material from Week 1. It is obvious that many of you really read the
reading assignments; indeed the readings are engaging. The best thing you can do for yourself
for Week 2 is to read all the readings carefully and thoughtfully.

This week we move to focus on what makes a person a person. In theological terms we would
consider what is the nature of a person. DQ 1 centers on a fundamental concept for this course.
For this DQ, you will want to consider Chapter 4 of the Called to Care textbook.
Your writing assignment this week is a response to a case study. Please read the instructions
carefully and compare the Rubric to make sure you understand the assignment. Both the
instructions and the rubric show 3 main sections that must be addressed. Sections 1 and 3 I think
are very clear. For Section 2, answer this for all the theories you wrote about in section 1.
(Maybe a better way to organize the paper is to have a section/heading on each of the characters
and in each section answer both 1 and 2 for each person. Then have a section at the end where
you take your stand and own one of the theories for yourself.)
The lecture notes explain 5 different theories for determining moral status. All 5 are outlined
and explained in the lecture notes. The video assigned in the course materials does an excellent
job of helping explain some of these 5 theories. But for the purpose of the case study
assignment, you will benefit by paying close attention to the theories outlined in the lecture
notes. The bioethics text book will give additional detail and perspective of these issues as well.
NOTE: You cannot get a passing grade on this assignment without understanding and applying
the moral status theories that are found in the lecture notes.
I will try to grade your Week 1 papers by mid-week so that you can use the feedback I give (on
things like APA format) to keep from making the same mistake a second time. Please read the
assignment feedback I will give.
