1 Company Overview
Booker Group Plc is the biggest food retailer in the UK. It is listed on the FTSE 250 index of the
country and serving the country since 1835. The company has a large customer base of around
1.5 million which is the main reason of its stability. Booker group plc has also been awarded
with the “Green Wholesaler of the Year” in 2014 which is the third for the company in
consecutive years. It has now contains 72 branches in UK having 13,000 employees. The
company has a sales target of £1.3 billion which makes it a veteran of its business. Booker Group
Plc also contains some of its own brands such as Chef’s Larder and Lichfields which is a
catering brand, Malt House Vinters and Chekov which is basically falls under wine, spirit and
tobacco brands and Happy Shopper and Euro Shopper which is the company’s own retail label.
Euro Shopper is also a licensed brand of the group until 2017 (Booker Plc, 2016).

4 Performance Measurement
Performance measurement of the company can be done by analysing various ratios which falls
under the categories of profitability, performance and liquidity. These three areas can be
evaluated by performing several ratios which is done in this case also for 5 years data extracted
in the table 3.
4.1 Profitability ratios
Profitability ratios are helpful for analysing the ability of a firm to generate the profits. The
profitability ratios for the Booker Group Plc can be analysed in the table 4.

percentage of fixed assets. It is showing positive growth since 2013 which indicates the stability

of the company’s operations. EPS is also growing since 2013 which is also positive for the
company as the profit on a single share is increasing. Dividend is also continuously growing as
the increase in EPS is observed. It is also good for investing purpose as the increased dividend
per share attracts investment. ROCE is increasing continuously which highlights the efficiency
of the operations because the main component of ROCE is operating profit which increases with
the efficient operations.
4.3 Liquidity Ratios
Liquidity ratios highlight the ability of a company to pay of its liabilities in the short run. The
current ratio is said to be feasible if its shows a ratio of 2:1 and quick ratio is good if the ratio

The current ratio is the company is decreased in 2016 as compared to the previous two years
which shows the increase in liability or decrease in assets. The quick ratio is also fluctuating

shows that the company has borrowed significant long term liability for the continuation of
operations.
