FINGER INJURY SOLUTION 1
Introduction
Petroleum Development Oman is considered as one of the most successful companies in the field
of oil exploration, which is located in Sultanate of Oman. This company offers its service of oil
production and natural gas exploration to major countries of the world. The focus of this
company is mainly on sustainable growth in Gulf area (PDO, 2019). PDO Company was
established in 1967 and the government is shearing almost 60% interest in the company. PDO is
operating on almost 90,000 Km2 area with having almost 8000 active wells and human capital of
around 8500 from all the parts of the world.

hazards like finger injury.
Where
It has been found that this finger injury incident mainly occurs in those areas of oil exploration
department where continuous use of instruments like drills and other cutting instrument are used.

FINGER INJURY SOLUTION 2
Factors which generate this situations
One of the main factors which motivate this solution is equipment not maintained properly as per
the required standard in order to save maintenance cost, which is, spend on these instruments.
Another important factor which produces this situation is environment in which Labour and
operators are continuously working includes elements like heat, noise, and dirt. Another
important factor is not following procedure as per the required of the process. Labour and
operator do not follow proper safety guidelines in order to earn some extra money in the form of
trying to save operating time (Ahmed & Ahmad, 2011). Another important factor which is
impacting is supervisor does not pay attention to the safety guideline of the company and let
workers continue their work to utilize as much as they can.
Solutions to avoid accidents like finger injury
In this situation, it is very important for PDO Company to avoid such kind of incidents in order
to offer a safe and secure work environment to the working force. Surety of safety will
automatically enhance the productivity of the company because workers do not have to worry
about the possibility of hazards in the workplace (Saracino et al., 2015). In order to avoid such
kind of incidents in the company must introduce three solutions like design a strong SOP,
Continuously maintain the instrument and Improve work environment.
Strong standard operating procedure
The company must introduce a strong standard procedure in which the labour and operators have
to compete all the safety procedure in order to enter in the workplace. The individual who fails to
complete any of the SOP steps will not be allowed to enter the workplace (Sundar, Balaji &
Kumar, 2014). Completion of safety training will be an important part of the Standard operating
procedure in order to get enter in the workshop. In addition to this, knowledge of the instrument
will be checked in order to ensure that operator is fully aware of the instruments.
Advantage and disadvantage
Advantage of this SOP is that it will ensure that person entering in the workplace is fully
equipped with the safety dress. In addition to this, it will ensure that person fully aware of their
safety procedures in such risky situations (Salonitis & Ball, 2013). In addition, SPO will ensure
that person entering in the workplace is aware of their personal safety.
Disadvantage of this SOP is that the company has to do a lot of paperwork, which will disturb
the operation time.
Maintaining instrument
After every six months, the company must conduct an audit in order to ensure that all the
instruments are working in their working condition. PDO must introduce a sub-maintenance
department in which focus interest area will be only machines (Hiatt, Grandy and Lee, 2015). In
addition to this, company will take help of external machine experts, which will re-audit the
machine in order to ensure that audit has been carried out with full honesty and care.

FINGER INJURY SOLUTION 3
Advantage and disadvantage
Advantage of maintaining instrument is that the company has to focus less on human safety
because of which company will be able to save a lot of time and effort. This time and efforts
company can be allocated to other company activities (Gander et al., 2011). In addition to this, it
will offer a safety environment to the working class.
Disadvantage is that company has to invest extra despite having maintenance department, which
affects the profitability of the company.
Enhance working environment
The company will focus its interest in exploring the thing, which acts as risky to human body or
aspects which can rise to possible hazards. After exploring the issues, the company will try to
minimize or completely eliminate these aspects from the workplace if possible (Bakker &
Oerlemans, 2011). In addition to this, the company will take care of the proper airflow and
hygiene within the workplace. In addition to this, workforce will be offered protective aprons
which will protect them from chemical and excess heat environment.
Advantage and disadvantage
Advantage of improved work environment it that the workers will feel safe while working in
their respective workplace, which will improve their effectiveness. In addition to this, it will also
act as a motivator for the worker in which they have feel that company cares about them.
Disadvantage related to improved workplace is that workers will start to take safety procedures
lightly which can result in serious hazard.
Conclusion
The growth and development of companies, which are linked with the oil and gas industry, is
completely dependent on the safety and security of the human capital. The business operation of
these companies is considered riskier as compared to other industries and therefore worker safety
must be the first priority of the company. The company must adopt a strong standard operating
procedure in order to maintain workers safety. In addition to this, the company must focus on
maintaining the instrument after every six months in order to improve working condition of
machines.
