INTRODUCTION
First aid kit is combination of various equipments that are used for providing medical
treatment to victim. This report includes discussion about policies and procedures which are
required to be followed by medical practitioner at the time of conducting surgery in a hospital.
Further, a medical booklet is designed for staff members for enhancing their awareness about it.
TASK 1
1.1 Who your first aider is and their role during a first aid emergency
At the time of conducting minor surgery of patient who has met with an accident and got
injured on his hand and some other parts of body, a first aider for medical practitioner is medical
staff only as they can take required decision at the time of surgery and can take preventive
measure to keep patient away from infection (Le and et. al., 2015). At the time of first aid
emergency, role of medical practitioner is to firstly analyse nature of injury in order to check
which kind of treatment will be suitable for it. Another role of medical probationer while treating
patient as well themselves to go for additional medical help in emergency cases and apply all
medical treatment with the usage of antiseptic ointment in order to avoid infection.
1.2 How you would minimise the risk of infection, to yourself, and the patient, when performing
first aid
While performing an first aid, it is essential for medical practitioner to minimise the risk
of infection for patients as well as themselves. For this, initially it is required by medical
practitioner to cover open skin areas of patient at the time of surgery in order to avoid infection
for themselves as well as patient. Further, it is important for them to carry gloves, mask and
goggles while treating patient or operating a surgery. Maintaining hygienic atmosphere is also
important while operating a surgery, this can be done by washing hands and another exposed
area with sanitizer or soap for reducing chances of infection in effective manner (Thygerson and
Thygerson, 2016). These precautions are also beneficial for patient as proper precautions taken
for maintaining hygiene level will cure patient from being infectious. As a result, they will
recover soon in a proper treatment. It can be said that if medical practitioners follows all
precautionary activities while treating a patient, then they can easily reduce chances of infection
to themselves as well as patient who is being treated by them.

1.3 How would you obtain consent to perform first aid
At the time of conducting an surgery, it is essential medical medical staff to obtain
consent before operating patient. It has been analysed that while treating patient under the age of
18, medical practitioner is required to take permission from parents or legal guardian. It has been
analysed that consent for conducting an operation is taken in written at the time of surgery so
that they could secure them self from any misconduct which could happen during surgery or later
on.
1.4 Identify and list your first aid equipment and emergency drug and explain what each one is
used forecasting
While operating a patient at the time of surgery, a medical practitioner requires many
equipment of first aid in order to save life of patient (First-Aid Checklist, 2019). It can be said a
good first aid box carries some various equipment which helps medical practitioners to provide
safe and secure treatment to patient (Hair and et. al., 2015). Essential equipments of first aid kit
are described as below with its uses:
 Gauge pad: used for cleaning wound and further cover cleaned area.
 Bandage: It is used for wrapping wound area after cleaning it with the antiseptic.
 Scissors: Scissors are mainly use to cut gauge according to the size of wound so that it
could be easily placed over wounded area. It is also used to cut damaged skin of injured
area.
 Gloves: It is used to avoiding chances of infection to the patient as well as medical staff.
Gloves are often used as ice packs by filling with frozen ice in emergency cases.
 Polysporin antibiotic cream: It considered as the antiseptic cream that can be applied
initially on wound in order to heal the injured area.
 Benadryl: It is oral antihistamine which is used to avoiding risk of allergy, itching and
rashes which might occur on patients skin due to injury.
1.5 Describe the safe use of first aid equipment
First aid equipments, works as a life saving tool for any patient. If it is properly used by
medical practitioner while providing treatment to patients than they can be cured. (Shultz and
Forbes, 2014). It can be said it is required by medical professionals to provide appropriate
training to their staff members to use first aid kit in safe way. For example: if an medical staff is
using using scissors to cut damaged skin of patient then it is important for them use clean and

rust free scissors in order to avoid risk of infection that may affect wound of injured person. As a
result, it is important for medical professional to use first aid equipments safely in order to a
patient effectively.

There are numerous of situations when medical practitioners are required to use certain
equipments which are helpful in treating adult patient properly. These equipments are helpful for
adult patient in recovering process too. Some these situations are described below with
equipments:
Collapsed: Child faint due to dehydration
 Equipment: Medical staff will initially use Pulse oximetry, blood pressure and ECG
 After providing required treatment to patient, volunteer will check blood pressure of
patient and will also check their temperature at regular basis with help of thermometer.
Breathing but unconscious: Patient is unconscious but still breathing
 Equipment: Pulse oximetry, blood sugar test strips, BP machine
 After providing treatment at initial stage medical staff will use thermometer and sugar
level of patient.
Unconscious and not breathing: Patient is Unconscious and not breathing
 Equipment: CPR, Oxygen mask etc.
 Volunteer will check patients pulse regularly. They are also required to check body
temperature of patients.
Having a seizure: When patient is going through a surgery medical staff will require following
equipments
 Equipment: Scissors, Gauge pad, pain killer injections, bandage, blood pressure machine
 Volunteer will provide regular based dressing to patient.
Patient in a shock: When patient is in a mental shock medical staff could use some of below
mentioned equipments:
 Equipment: Blood pressure machine, electric shocks,

 After this, medical staff will provide some psychiatrist sessions to patient in order to
make them recover soon.
CONCLUSION
As per the above mentioned report, it has been analysed that first aid equipment can be
seen as the helpful tool which contributes in saving life of victim. It is essential for medical staff
as well as normal individual to have knowledge of first aid kit and its usage in different cases for
controlling hazardous situation at preliminary stage.
