The most important event in someone’s life is when he or she makes a progression towards his or
her career. Getting a Job or performing the first job is an exotic experience for anybody. With
this experience comes a lot of learning. Let us discuss on the aspects that one can learn from
performing the first job (Breaux). These aspects can be Business oriented, Technology oriented,
Ethics oriented and Attributional orientation.
Business Skills:
Leadership: We learn how leaders behave and different types of leadership styles that
form the foundational stone in any organization.
Project management and planning: Managing the projects in a timely manner is one of
the key learning while performing the first job.
Delegation and time management: Time management would be an important learning at
first job, based on which the career path would become smooth.
Problem solving: This is a part of any project or a job and while performing the first job,
problem solving techniques would help to grow within and beyond the organization
Networking: At first job, we learn how to connect with people (formally and informally)
and thereby create a network of professional relationship.
Technology Skills:
The technological skills are most important skills to perform better at the job. While performing
the first job, the most essential learnings would be to have Spreadsheets Skills, presentation
skills, database skills, documentation skills, Videoconferencing, email management skills,

programming skills (if relevant) and web exploration skills. Also, with software skills, we could
learn hardware skills as feasible from job role perspective (WOLFE).
Ethical Skills:
While we perform the first job, along with business and technology skills, there is one more skill
that is important to learn which is known as ethical skills. While working with people of
different types or traits, ethics is one thing that we should learn to be successful in the trajectory
of career path. Some ethical skills that we learn are respect, service commitment, equality,
justice, and lastly honesty.
Attributional employability learnings:
Motivation and positive attitude: Going through a difficult work-life balance and dealing with
tough manager is all about learning to keep calm and patience. As we perform the first job as
juniors, bosses always want to get the work completed on time with positive attitude. Result
Orientation is one aspect that we learn at first job. Another skill that we learn while performing
first job is developing self-confidence and motivation (Jones).
Communication and customer relationship management: It is hard to convince the customers
and it is all about your communication skills. While we perform the first job, we learn to remain
calm and composed, no matter what the situation is in front of us (though this comes gradually,
not on first day). It is essential to be empathetic and polite while listening to other’s concerns.
We are tested on listening and speaking skills while performing at the first job and that decides
the next course of action in career growth to an extent.
Other attributes: We learn team work, innovation & creativity, proactiveness while performing
the first job. With each passing day at the job, all the mentioned aspects test your abilities and it
