INTRODUCTION
Health and safety regulations for organisation give direction and guidance to
organisations regarding precautions they should take to avoid possible and potential risk to safety
of workers. This report will discuss about source of contamination and what strategic options can
be taken to reduce the risk.
Sources of contamination in Fletcher Building Limited
Contamination can be defined as act and state of making something polluted and impure.
Contamination possesses possibility of affecting health of individual and threat to safety of
workers in relation with organisation. Fletcher Building Limited is a construction company and
some of the sources that can contaminate air and cause airborne hazards are-
Chemicals
This is one of the most important sources of the air contamination, this means that hazardous
chemicals are used for construction sites and they contaminate air at the construction sites and
this chemicals are used through glues, oils, paints thinners and plastics, all these chemical
produces noxious vapours and contaminate the air (Sun and et.al., 2019). This later contributes in
occupational risk for those working at construction sites.
Land clearing and demolition
This is another source of contamination in construction industry and this is being one of the
important activity become vital to carry out and while carrying out this high level of dust is
generated and this contaminates air around the site of construction.
Use of plant and vehicles on site
This is concerned with site activities and involves machinery such as breakers, bulldozers,
dumpers and excavators. These operate on diesel engines, and they release pollutants into the air.
Gases involve gases carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. These
gases contaminate the air and contribute in airborne diseases of the workers.

Strategic options available to Fletcher Building Limited to reduce the incidences
Strategic options refer to those options through which industry can reduce the impact of
and manage the risk to health and safety of the workers.
Strategies available for Fletcher Building Limited are to identify the risk that could give rise to
foreseeable risks to health and safety (Kojima and et.al., 2017). This is important for identifying
and understanding measures to manage the risk.
Followed by this and according to law, another strategy is to understand and identify the
measures to manage and reduce the risk. This involves implementing control measures that is
suitable for reducing the air contamination and subsequently reducing the risk to health and
safety as well. In this strategy Fletcher Building Limited also need to implement and adopt
strategy to educate worker and training them through which they can avoid and prevent any kind
of risk on their health and safety through airborne diseases.
Fine water sprays can be used to dampen down the site is another way air pollution can be used
(Weldeslassie and et.al., 2018).
Other than this it is important that Fletcher Building Limited provides personal protective
equipments to workers to prevent contaminated air that leads to diseases.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of above discussion it can be concluded that in construction industries it is
natural that activities contaminate air. This is why it is important that adequate measures are
taken to prevent the impact.
