Executive Summary
The case study in the article named “A slow unravelling” (Vaitheeswaran 2019, p.^pp.) is used as a
starting point to review issues that are currently affecting global supply chains. Focus is placed on
the rise of protectionism and the decline of globalisation, developments in technology applicable
to the process and labour rights watch.
As trade wars escalates, nations that were once open to globalisation are receding their economic
openness, many experiencing rise in protectionist and nationalist movements calling for increased
tariffs on incoming products. Global supply chains with multiple locations sites, such as Flex Ltd.,
are finding themselves in a vulnerable situation as they are affected by the taxation imposed
across borders.
Additionally, the late twentieth century produced a slew of technical and technological
advancements that revolutionized the supply chain. Similarly, the beginning of this century has
introduced an exponential number of innovative and novel advancements that are marking the
difference among competitors in the market. To maintain market share, profitability and viability,

Breakthroughs in different fields of technology have impacted various domains of human society.
In the case of global supply chains, it is not different, as new advancements have already been
successfully applied to different cases such as the use of Workday to apply artificial intelligence to

It is important to highlight that not all technological applications will necessarily benefit the overall
process as some advancements will create as many problems as they solve (McKinsey 2017,

p.^pp.); and more recently the case of the reports of Malaysian forced labour factories in 2014
that required the company to release statements and review its policies (Leong 2014, p.^pp.).
These and other issues have impacted the organisation and the brand image, so much that the
International Trade Union Confederation has labelled the company with dubious labour right
records history (Confederation 2016, p.^pp.)
It must be emphasised that labour rights are important to Flex Ltd. As an organisation it has
fostered safe and fair workplaces as well as encouraged employees to feel empowered to improve
their quality of life (FlexLtd. 2018, p.^pp.) . Great strides and different efforts have been set in

Besides these perils, workers are also exposed to labour rights violations across the world, being
most notorious in the Middle East and Northern Africa. Infringements are recorded every year
from April to March by the International Trade Union Confederation int their Global Rights Index
that portrays the world's most noticeably awful nations for laborers by rating nations on a scale
from 1 to 5+ on the level of regard for laborers' rights (figure A4).

Fortunately, besides some incidents in the pasts, Flex Ltd. has a firm code of ethics in place,
