INTRODUCTION
Since the innovation of sir travel various organizations have been created to facilitate safe
air travel at a regional national and international level. The present report provides brief
introduction of ICAO and discussion on role of standard operating procedures in ensuring safe
air travel.
MAIN BODY
Introduction of ICAO
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) comes under the Unvitiated Nations
specialized agencies. The agency was formed in the year 1947 and is currently headquartered in
Montreal, Canada. It is an autonomous organization working with United nations by using co-
ordinating machinery of United Nations Economic and Social Council at intergovernmental level
and through Chief Executives Board of coordination at inter-secretariat level. It ensures safe air
travel and growth of the aviation sector by fostering planning and development of international
air transportation. In addition to this principles and methods of global air navigation are changed
by ICAO. The agency has 193 members which includes 192 UN members and Cook Islands. The
council of ICAO is created through an election in every three years which includes three groups
containing 36 members (Anderson, Fannin and Nelson, 2018) . Group consists of members with
high importance, group 2 consist of members who make large contributions while group three
consists of countries with geographical representation. Standardization of various functions of
the airline industry is conducted by ICAO such as the Aeronautical message handling system.
Each member country of ICAO is required to have Aeronautical information publication (AIP)
as per the standards of ICAO which contains information essential to air navigation. Member
countries are needed to update their AIP manuals after every 28 days and give information about
regulations and procedures about the airport and airspace of the country. ICAO issues airport and
airline codes along with published standards for machine readable passports. ICAO technology
standards provides information on emission limits of aircraft engines. This includes standards for
Hydrocarbons, Carbon monoxide, NOx, smoke and particulate mater (Damgacioglu, Celik and
Guller, 2018). In addition to this ICAO maintains standards for aircraft registrations including
alphanumeric codes for identification of the country in which the aircraft was registered. Aircraft
type designators are also issued by ICAO which are 2-4 alphanumeric characters.

Discussion on SOP's
SOP refers to standard operating procedure which is created by an airline is a framework
for common procedures which support pilots in operating commercial aircraft in a safe manner.
A standard operating procedure includes a step by step guide which directs the flight crew in
conducting various aviation operations safely and effectively. Standard operating procedures
play a fundamental role in safe air travel as they ensure that aviation tasks are completed in a
correct manner. The aim of standard operating procedure needs to not only ensure safe
completion of specific operation but also be understood by crew with different experience and
professional and personal background easily to ensure safe air travel in every flight. Standard
operating Procedures are created by business firms in order to include improvements based on
technological advancement, accidents, experience and innovative manufacturing operations and
specific needs of a particular operation. Standard operating procedure consists of both normal
and non-normal operations. This includes direction on safe take off and landing while also
providing instructions in case of an engine failure (Gui and et. al., 2020) . Standardization of
aviation operations increase efficiency and quality control while ensuring consistency to
administer aviation programmes across the country. It is important for airline firms to construct
Standard operatin procedure which is not highly exhaustive so that it leads to loss of cognition in
the process and should not be relaxed so that the crew is stuck with two many options and it
affects their decision making. Usually checklist is apart of the standard operating procedure such
as conducting landing checklist after the locking of the landing gear after the aircraft is
approaching landing. It is important for every airline to build effective standard operating
procedure in order to ensure safe journey of every flight.
Discussion on requirement of SOP's for conducting safe aviation operations
It is important for airline firms to create and adhere to standard operating procedures
order to ensure safety of ground and flight operations by prevention and mitigation of crew
errors and by anticipating and managing operational threats. In addition to this standard
operating procedures ensure that aircraft is controlled by the cockpit crew as per the instructions
of the manufactures which plays an essential role ins safety of the flight (Cak, Say and
Misirlisoy, 2020). Aircraft resources and functional technologies are used optimally by the crew
which increases both safety and efficiency of the aircraft. This increases the value of standard
operating procedures in daily aviation operations of an airline. standard operating procedures

help flight crew avoid deviations and errors which are associated with accidents thereby
increasing safe journey of the flight. In addition to this it is because of the standard operating
procedures that flight crew consisting of employees from different personal and professional
backgrounds and level of experience is able to work together and ensure safe journey of the
flight. Standard operating procedure also help flight crew manage situations in adverse
conditions such as drastic climate change or technological failure in the plane. Flight crew is able
to effectively handle passengers in every situation and ensure health of the crew with the help of
standard operating procedure related to handling sickly patients. Standard operating procedures
are needed to increase operational efficiency and safety during air travel. Another fact which
highlights the importance if standard operating procedures is that it enables airline business firms
make continuous improvement in their business operations continuously by including lessons
from past experience, technological improvement, manufacturing innovation accident history to
continuously improve safety of the aircraft.

CONCLUSION
From the above report it is determined that ICAO is a specialized agency of United
nations which plays an important role in ensuring safe aircraft operations all over the globe.
