Introduction
The Darlington Upgrade Project is a vital stage in the provision of Adelaide's North-South
Corridor and will lead to an upgrade of the existing Main South Road. Adelaide’s North-South
Corridor links Gawler and Old Noarlunga and connects the rapidly growing manufacturing and
suburban areas in the north and the south, creating new prospects for commercial advancement.
It is one of Adelaide’s most significant transport corridors and is the main route for north and
south bound traffic (comprising cargo trucks) operating between Gawler and Old Noarlunga at a
reserve of 78 kilometres (South Australia, 2016, Pg.9).
The North-South Corridor is encompassed of four road links:
Northern Arterial highway from Gawler to Port Wakefield Road.
2. Northern Connector from Port Wakefield Road to Port River Super highway.
3. North-South Boulevard from Port River Super highway to Southern Super highway;
and
4. Southern Arterial highway from Darlington to Old Noarlunga.
The existing roadway is incapable of handling predictable land use and transport
advancement and the number of automobiles that necessity the usage of the road or the size of
cargo carriers roaming along it. The Main South Road intersection is one of full of activity
juncture in South Australia, with roughly 98 000 automobiles roaming through it every day. As a
consequence, this segment of Main South Road is repeatedly jammed for northbound
automobiles in the dawn peak period and southbound automobiles in the evening peak (South
Australia, 2011, Pg.7). As a consequence, four of the existing top ten demanding intersections
within the State will be upgraded by the Darlington Upgrade Project.

In response, the Australian and South Australian State Administrations have expressed
their desire to expand the road by constructing an enthusiastic North-South Corridor. Upon
completion, the North-South Corridor will; Intensify commercial efficiency, Expand
connectivity and, road safety. According to Australia Development Bank, Australian
Administration alongside the South Australian State Government, has devoted to build the $620
million Darlington Upgrade Scheme. The Australian Administration has committed $496 million
and the South Australian State Government’s engrossment will be $124 million. The venture is
due for completion in 2019 (South Australia, 2011, Pg.11).
The Darlington Upgrade Development is being implemented by Gateway South
contracted by the South Australian Department of Planning, Transport and
Infrastructure. Gateway South is a joint venture amongst Laing O’Rourke and Fulton Hogan,
with Jacobs providing the design in connotation with its associates, Kellogg Brown & Root
(KBR) and, Snowy Mountains Engineering Corporation (SMEC) (South Australia, 2016, Pg.21).
Conclusion
In conclusion, Darlington Upgrade Project is set to offer growth and expansion of the
South Australian state and Australia continent as a whole. First, Darlington Upgrade Project is
set to provide cost savings for industry and other users through reductions in travel times and
vehicle. Road way expansion is set to reduce jamming for northbound automobiles in the dawn
peak period and southbound automobiles in the evening peak (South Australia, 2016, Pg.13).
Secondly, expansion of the North- South corridor is set to stimulate a net creation of economic
activity and new activity by existing companies that would not otherwise occur. Additionally, the
project is set to create an access to the Darlington precinct due to the well-built road network
hence growth of Southern Australia state economy.

The Australian government and the South Australian state Government contain vast
resources that are to be utilized in the implementation of the Darlington Upgrade Project. The
project is jointly funded by Australian and State governments ($496 million federally funded and
$124 million state funded) (South Australia, 2016, Pg.10). The funds are to outsource Human
resources, equipment and machinery and, construction materials. The approximation of
uninterrupted full-time employments sustained by the Darlington Upgrade Project is roughly 370
per year for the period of major construction. The development will be executed in accordance
with the South Australian Government’s course of action for workforce contribution, which
guarantees enlarged job openings for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Local peoples, learners,
interns, local folks with restrictions to employment and the up-skilling of individuals involved in
civil building contracts in South Australia. The State Government is dedicated to guaranteeing
local South Australian businesses benefit from the construction of the project South Australia,
