INTRODUCTION
Leadership is an action of leading a team to attain an objective. Most of the organisations
are focused on leadership skills for those designations which are having a need of team leader
(Nahavandi, 2016). Different theories are developed on the leadership which can help leader to
motivate their subordinates towards performing their work effectually. Democratic, autocratic,
laissez faire, situational, etc. can help a leader to attain his goals. Leadership style adopted by
leader according to his need and it helps to him to survive his team to take it in a better situation.
Leadership is having a need of management's supports in to manage people in a team.
Management is an another part which supports to teams to manage their work and to attain their
targets. Both are distinct to each other but these are having huge values in organisational
objectives attainment. Different authors have researched on the management subject and
develops various kind of theories which can help to managers to manage teams with in his
situations (Gruber, & Wigmore, 2016). Scientific, administrative, bureaucratic and human
relations are some of the examples of theories developed by researchers and these theories are
successfully working to manage people according to the needs of managers.
This report is based on FMG Company which is working in Australia. Report will
provide a brief introduction of leadership and management theories used in company to manage
their employees against the organisational targets. In the beginning of this report, it will explain
role of leadership and management in different situations. After this, it will describe the proposal
of changes in organisation which can help company to improve organisational efficiency. This

ACTIVITY 4A
Analysis on management and leadership
As I am working in the FMG company in the Australia as a Reliability Technician/
Engineer, leadership is an element which has a huge impact on the organisation (Renz, 2016). It
impacts on employees, production and potentials to attain targets by the the company. As I have
an experience of 18 years in this organisation, I have analysed that management and leadership

both are having a significant role ion the organisational success in attaining their targets. Both
supports to each other in the organisation and finally impacts on the organisational targets. FMG
has adopted democratic leadership style, this style allows to managers to involve their
subordinates in decision making process which supports to organisation to determine better
decisions for the company. Some advantage of this leadership styles are here which I have
analysed during my work;
Dispersion of duties: It helps to the management to make a better change in the company,
democratic leadership style divide duties in the team members which can help to the team
leaders to be pressure free (Nahavandi, 2016). As I am reliability technician in the organisation
and I have analysed that many types of employees are working in my team and they are having a
specifications and skills which has to be utilised in the team. Managers feels relaxed in the
organisation by distributing their responsibilities in their team mates which can help to them to
focus on the team objectives which can finally support to attain organisational objectives. As we
are having different types of team which are having a huge duty in the betterment of the
organisation.
Employee empowerment: Employees feels as a part of the organisation when
management considers their opinions and suggestions in their decision making. Many of the
companies does not use appropriate leadership style which impacts on the attainment of
organisational objectives. This helps to the company to provide a more energetic feel to
employees by providing this type of behaviours from the organisation side. Considering on my
team, I use to take suggestion of team mates which supports to take a better decision. Also my
subordinates feels better when I take suggestion from them on a critical situation.
Positive working environment: By using democratic leadership style, it provides a better
feel to employees. Mainly it provides a positive working environment in the company to
employees which motivates them, to work better and make a better change in the retaining
working style (Grohar-Murray, DiCroce. and Langan, 2016). This leadership style increases the
employee involvement in the management which can help to create a better bonding in the team.
It helps to develop a positive communication flow on the problematic issues which can help to
the company to make a better change in the team bonding. In my career, I have analysed that
democratic leadership helped us to make a better team bonding which helps to us to attain our

objectives. As we are having responsibilities to manage equipments, machineries and vehicles, it
helped to us to make a better co ordination in the team members and communication.
Decline in employee turnover: It is prior to become a successful organisation where
employees feels satisfied with the management and their team (Long, 2017). To develop this
type of environment it is essential to consider needs of people in the company which can help to
the company to provide a better treatment to the company members. Satisfaction can be provided
in the term of money, work place environment, team bonding etc. in my work career, I had
communicate with my team members which can help to them to work better. Solution is on each
conflict issue provides a satisfaction to employee which can help to them to retain his work. It
reduce the dissatisfaction element from workers which can help to the company to reduce the
employee turnover.
Establishment of communication: Democratic leadership styles helps to the company to
make a better communication in the team which can help to the higher management to attain
organisation goals. Most of the companies emphasize on the communication which can help to
them to improve co ordination among the team and their members which can help to them to
work against challenging external environment. Most of the team in my organisation like.;
mining, geographical research, technicians teams are having a huge bonding in the teams which
helps to them to complete a project in a particular time period.
Decision making: Mainly democratic leadership styles supports a company to take a
better decision in the favour of the company which can help to the organisation to overcome on
their conflicts and issues which are arising in the management. A decision is based on the
organisational situations but it is essential that decision which is taken by the management has to
be longer impactful (Goetsch. and Davis, 2014). Democratic leadership style is known for the
better decision making which can help to the company to make a better change in the
organisation. Different employees are having different views on issue which supports to cover
many type of relevant aspects on issue while determining a decision on a particular topic.
Management is a key process of arranging employees according to the situational needs
of company. It is vital process of the organisation which can help to the company to manage their
work and attain the organisational objectives. As many companies are working in the mining
sector so it is essential to use an appropriate management styles which can help to the
organisation to survive in this sector and attain organisational objectives with in pre decided time

period. As in the FMG, company is using the democratic leadership style so they are also using
the same kind of management style. Both leadership and management styles are supportive for
each other and finally helps to the company members to work better according to their
productivities. Democratic management styles allows to the company to make a better change in
the arranging people, business activities by taking suggestions of the employees. As I am
working as a reliability technician, I have analysed that several times our management helps to
us to work against the situations by providing their support in our acts. It has a huge impact on
the employee's performance and it can support to improve the productivity of the employees
which is must for an employee.
Leadership and management different in military situation and general industry
Leadership and managerial roles are different in the military situations and general
industry because both situations are having different needs. Some of the leadership roles are
described under here;
Vision: Leaders are having a vision for a better future, considering it to the military situations,
leaders are having a vision to create a better policy which does not having any kind of risk
regarding to failure (Răducan. and Răducan, 2014). But on the other side leaders in the
organisation are having their focus on the profit making and decreasing market competition.
Inspire to people: Leaders in military situations are having a huge liability to inspire to soldiers
to protect their nation from external harmful forces. On the other side leaders in the organisation
are having huge responsibilities to improve productivity of employees which can help to the
company to lean in the market. Organisational leaders are not having a protective strategy, they
are having a focus on the growth.
Team builder: Leaders are having a duty to build teams which can help to them to attain their
pre determined objectives by the leaders (Gopee. and Galloway, 2017). In the military conditions
soldiers are having a huge need to work in small troops which can help to attack or protect on
against enemy forces. But considering it in the organisational context, people works in the
company having a huge responsibilities to attain their goals so their team leaders creates different
teams according to their skills which makes them able to attain their targets in pre determined
deadlines.
Difference in between managerial roles in both conditions;
4

Monitor; Managers are having a main role to monitor their subordinates, in military situations
commanders are having a liability to manage their troops according to the directions of majors
(Fernández-Muñiz, Montes-Peón. and Vázquez-Ordás, 2014). But on the other side managers are
having role to arrange employee's and business activities to win on the situation.
Spokesperson; In military situations generals are having a responsibility to inspire and direct
troops which can help to leaders to formulate their strategy on the ground. But on the other side
in general industry managers are having this role to encourage employees towards their work and
resolve their personal and occupational issues.
ACTIVITY 4B
Leadership and Management- Personal Experience
I have a good experience of working in FMG Company which is an Australian based
organisation. Its core business is related with carrying out exploration in mines. At present, I am
working as a Reliability Technician who has a responsibility to assess the assets used in mining
against project. There are different roles and responsibilities that are associated with my job
profile. In this, I have to combine technical responsibilities with project management so as to
ensure better results and environment. I have arrange mechanical assets for mining projects
which can help to company to manage their work speed. Without people like me it is impossible
for sites to run as they will become too chaotic.
I have the responsibility of planning, marking out, levelling floors before any further
extraction of cited minerals is done in the mountain. Basically, I manage people as well as ensure
that each and every equipment is running well. This protects people and the surrounding. There
are different types of changes that I as a Reliability Technician was able to instigate in past.
These changes allow me in managing the site as well as ensuring that no hazard would take place
while minerals are extracted. The changes initiated by me are:
Changes in Site layout: The movement of vehicles as well as people on site is a very
important aspect in mining. Any issue can cause hazard or even casualty. Being a Reliability
Technician, I have responsibility to plan out the ways in which things are managed and
equipment are used. It has to be designed while keeping three factors in mind, loading of
material, movement of people and establishment of equipment. Basically, movement on the
upper surface will have impact on underground activities. Especially, at the time of heavy

vehicles. Also to take people in and out of mine there is a special lift or train required depending
on the type of path.
Daily equipment maintenance: I am working as a Reliability Technician in company so,
I am having a responsibility to collect information about equipment which are used in the
project. It is essential for me that all vehicles, machineries, lifts and earthmover machines have to
be updated. As company is operating in the mining sector, so, here any kind of risks, accidents
and demands can arise. Thus, it is essential to have some provisions in our spare which can help
to retain our work flow. We are using weekly maintenance of equipment and so we make a list in
the week of those machines and vehicles which having any requirement of maintenance and
repairs. But I have analysed that some of machines are required an urgent repair due to their huge
needs in the drilling and mining so it is essential for us to make a daily list of equipment’s repair
requirements. This is a better solution for this problem, by this our machineries get repaired
timely.
Use of Excel sheet: As we are working to keep a record of machines which are used in
the drilling and mining related work, we make a list in the written document to keep
weekly records. It is essential for us to use technology in this part by which we can
improve our work efficiency. We have to use excel sheet which can help to us to find out
a machine code easily and keep different records. Written work creates a huge pressure
on the team workers and it has a huge risk of human errors which creates a huge
confusion in the team members. So I have decided to make change in the recordings of
data which can help to the company to make a better change in the ongoing process.
Excel sheet can provide us a facility that we can found easily record of a particular
equipment regarding to their maintenance. This will help us to take a decision about to
use it in future, it's reliability for a particular project. So company has to allow us to use
Excel sheets in our workings and issue funds for us to buy relevant systems like;
computers, printers etc. to manufacture excel sheets of machines.
Keep daily track records: I intend to take change in the recordings and filling data on
daily basis rather to weekly basis. Most of the time we maintain record of our stock on
weekly basis. This is reducing the efficiency of the company towards the objectives
because weekly tracking of machines which are not used creates a pressure on the
organisation. Proper utilisation of equipment’s is required to leads on situational needs so
6
Document Page
we have to make daily list of those vehicles, equipment’s and machineries which are not
in use in any kind of company's project and which are not having any need of
maintenance and repairs. It will help to the company to utilise their resources in
appropriate manner which can help to the company to gain a competitive advantage. It is
my duty that I would utilise machines and equipment’s in those places where they are
needed, either it is wastage of them to be for the company. It can help to the company to
retain their progress in their several projects working in the Australia. So I want to make
a team which fastly report me about those machines which are not in the use of any
project and has accomplished its work. It can help to the company to keep huge numbers
of equipments in their spares which can help to the company to accelerate their work and
attain its organisational objectives in appropriate timings.
ACTIVITY 4D
Employee's empowerment is an essential thing which can help them to be more effective
for the organisation. As large number of employees are working in Anglesey Mining, so, it is
essential for the higher authorities to provide them better treatment and working facilities which
can help them to work better. This makes them more responsible against the organisation which
is an essential thing for organisational perspective. Most of the companies are preferring this
which helps them to survive in this typical competitive environment. As I am working as a
Reliability Technician in the FMG Mining Company, I have provided empowerment to
employees in different areas where some of them are discussed as:
Decision making: As I am a Reliability Technician in the organisation, some people in
my team are skilled which can help me to take better decisions. It is essential to manage
my team effectively which can help me to attain my daily targets. Some people are
having a quality that they can easily analyse the needs of situations. So, I have used those
people in my team to take lower level of decisions which improve their self-confidence.
It supports to build new team leaders in the organisation which can help organisation to
attain objectives at a fast pace. Most of the companies start believing on their employees
after rendering a particular time of period in the organisation. It can help company to
make a better change in attainment of objectives. It helps me a lot to take better decisions
and retain my focus on the engineering work. Team members which are involved in the

decision making feel like a part of the organisation which can help to improve their, self-
confidence working in the company. Most of the companies which are working in mining
industry are having a need that people working in it can take better decisions. Either, it is
risky but it will surely support in the development of the company.
As I am now 45 years old and having an experience of 18 years in this organisation, I
have felt that employees need to communicate with their seniors not with their collogues to
resolve their issues regarding to work which can help to them to make a better change in their
working style. Most of the time, new employees discuss their issues with co-workers and
implement their suggestions in their acts. That is the reason; they have to put a lot of regrets for it
to their seniors. I have attempted several attempts regarding to this which can help to the new
joiners to work better and resolve their conflicts, some of them are here;
Open communication in lunch hours: I have organised open session with new
employees in tea and lunch time which can help them to be hesitation free with seniors.
This is a type of informal communication in company which can help to the firm to make
a better change in the business operations. Lunch sharing method is useful in creating
greater bonding among the team members which can help to attain set targets within
stipulated period of time. Along with that, it can help in accomplishing the project within
specific time frame. Leadership factor is used in this and I have discussed my personal
experience with my colleges. This was really supports to me to communicate with my
new team members. Communication is an essential element to empower people so I have
used this in informal ways. It has helped me a lot to make changes my team workings. As
we are having responsibilities to maintain records of machineries, vehicles and send them
to projects requirements so it was essential for us to keep communication in between the
dockyard and data room which can help to us to keep records of the vehicles and
machineries. In this open session I have arisen some issue in between the team members
like; lack of communication, use of codes for type of vehicle and machineries, tracking of
machineries, list of project requirements etc. this was helped me a lot to make a better
change in the workings of our team. Many of the new joiners were unable to remind the
code of machines so I have provided them a list which they can keep with them which
can help to remind code list. Also I have communicated with them that these are small
issues which they are facing so this is a learning time for them which can help to be a

better an employee for the organisation. This session was helped a lot to them and also
work up on my objective to conduct this informal meet. It empowers them to work more
better in a free manner which helps to them to provide more better workings to the
company. Self-development chart: This was the most useful technique for me to
empower my people towards their challenges which they were facing while working in
organisation. Most of the new people were having many issues and problems when they
start their work in organisation. I have provided printed template to each and every one in
my team which helped them to make a self-analysis against their job responsibilities. This
is a type of personal development plan which can help a person to identify his/her
weakness and the way they can overcome them. It helped to the employees which were
facing some issues in the organisation and as well as they mentioned ways to overcome
on it. It helped to me to know what were the challenges faced by them which can help to
the company to grow better in the mining sector. Most of the new employees marked that
they were having problems regarding to manage their work in their shifts. Most of the
people was having a lack of knowledge of time management strategies. Most of the
people in my team has marked that they gather information on time management
strategies from internet and I have also provided them pocket size diary in which they can
mention works to do in a day. It helped to them to maintain their work according to
remaining time and make a provision for some extra kind of urgent work. In the result of
this diary management technique, it helped a lot to employees to manage their work and
also it helped to them to get free at the end of their shifts. My team's works has improved
by adopting this diary management and it helped largely in accomplishing our projects in
set deadlines. Our information and records were started to be updated of machineries
information. This was the better implementation of employee’s empowerment in the
organisation by my side in our team. It is my responsibility if my subordinates are not
able to deal with the requirements of the organisation.

Industrial techniques which has to be adopted by the FMG
It is essential for the company to adopt industrial techniques which can help to the
company to improve their efficiency in improving project management which can help to the
company to accomplish projects in pre determined time limits. Some of them are here;
Flow process chart: It is method which is used in the organisation to present graphical and
symbolic representation of activities which can help to the employees to analyse the activities
which has to be done in a particular project (Davis. and Jones, 2014). As I am working in the
FMG, we are having a need to complete our project in a particular time period so it is essential
for the managers and leaders of the company to use it in the company. Many types of symbols
are involved in it which shows the process of the activity and project.
Flow diagram: It is related to the flow of activity, action and information in a diagram which can
help to the company to arrange people in a better manner. As I am working in the company, I felt
huge need of flow diagrams which can support to me to show the flow of process in a project in
the company. It can help to the management to analyse the time taken in a particular activity. It is
also having different types of circles, arrows, rectangles and squires which can help to the
company to show the project process flow direction and status of the project completion.
Two handed process chart: This is chart which can help to the company to arrange their actions
in a better manner in a project. It is essential that minimum activities has to be done in a project
which can help to the company to reduce the time and cost consumption in the project
completion. As in mining projects we have to accomplish a project by connecting several
activities in a sequence which can help to the company to attain their organisational objectives
(West, West. and Lee, 2015). But it is essential that company has to reduce the unnecessary
involved activities which are putting a huge pressure on the employees and management. It can
help to the company to reduce the cost and time consumption in it which can convert a project in
to more profitable project for the company.
String diagrams: It is the most simple industrial technique, this diagrams helps to show the flow
path of materials and manpower by using scale and thread on a sheet (Bush. and Glover, 2014).
Generally a 1 squire inch block printed sheet is used in this which can help to the company and
management to analyse the time taken in a particular movement. In the mining industry we are
having a huge need of this type of scaling of process which can help to us to determine a rough
10
Document Page
time for a particular movement of material which can help to maximum utilisation of our
resources.
Multiple activity chart: These types of charts are based on the time scale and it is made to record
an activity to compare it with another. Mainly two types of multiple activities are used in this
which are worker, machines (Siegling, Nielsen. and Petrides, 2014). These both resources are
used in the company which helps in to the mining process and multiple activities charts can help
to the company to show the process of working a man on particular machine and another man
working on that machine. It can help to make a comparison in between the both which can help
to analyse skills.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of the above presented report it can be concluded that managers and leaders
are having a huge responsibility of organisational success. Managerial and leadership roles are
different in the general industry and military situations according to their vision, actions. Leaders
and team leaders has to implement changes on their own level which can help to the company to
improve their productivity. Democratic leadership and management style is used in the company
and it has a huge impact on the organisation and their employees. It is essential for the managers
and leaders to empower their employees which can help to them to attain organisational
objectives in a particular time period.
