Reflective journal; communication skills
During day to day interactions, the active skills of communication are always manifest in peoples
communication either verbally or nonverbally. The aspects of effective communication are
important to enable people decode messages through language, the strongest forms sending
messages that humans use, but not limited to languages. People send messages through their
reactions, secret gestures and body movements and at times, intrinsic body movements and
reactions that are not plainly discernible and are almost automatic reflexes to certain stimulus.
Clearly, communication is a broad subjects and it is important to understand the fundamental
requirements for human interaction as well as the context within which certain parameters are
instituted. The Importance of proper decoding of messages without interference or chances of
misinterpretation cannot be underestimated especially in formal set ups that require a good chain
of communication for effective running of the business of the day. From the basics of
instructions giving and receiving to the abstract interpretation of art, communication ought to be
seamless and serve the purpose of conveying information. All the areas of communication skills
need to be attended to from listening skills, body language, empathetic listening, polite
interruptions and contextual etiquette to the intrigues of making inferences and deductions.
One of the most underestimated areas of communication is the docket that deals with empathetic
listening. Empathy is the virtue of dealing with a person’s affliction in an understanding way and
with an aim to help. More often than not, we listen to the plight of other people like we are
reading an article in the dailies or watching a piece of news on television. With this kind of
listening, the only thing we offer those with different problems is sympathy. Being sympathetic
does not account for any positive impact to the life of a person who needs advise or help. The
best communication we can offer is empathetic listening because with that, we are able to ask

questions, debate the choices a person has as well as seek solutions to the persons afflictions
together. Empathetic listening needs a person who has great interpersonal skills to ensure the
listener does not miss a thing the person they are dealing with says. Similarly, Empathetic
listening needs a good listener, who does not interrupt, motivates the speaker to speak with
simple cues like nodding as well as a listener who seeks clarification on issues that may seem
ambiguous or facts that need to be understood. From this position, it is thus not everybody’s cup
of tea, it requires dedication as well as the will to help. The challenge with empathetic learning is
that at times, we are not in a position to help the speaker and all we can offer is advice which
