products, business strategies, health and safety policies and the corporate social
responsibilities have been discussed here.
P1.Describe the size and structure of the food retailing sector
The food retailing business is growing day by day all over the world. A large scale of sales
comes from the food and retail sector in the UK. In the past the size of the food retailers was
small and they were situated in the centres, and renowned in the cities. Now a days, the size
and structure of the food retail business have been changed. In the UK, now the food retailing
business has flourished everywhere in all cities. The change in the minds of customers, the
lifestyle and the social changes has enlarged the retail business in the UK. The food retail
stores and counters have set up in all the cities. To cope up with the changing needs and
demands, all the retailers are shaping their food retail business (Scott, 2017). Example of
large food retailers in the UK are Tesco Plc, Marks & Spencer and others.
P2. Describe the types of products offered by food retailers
Different food retailers offer different food items based on the choices and demands of the
customers. For instance, the retailers that deals their products in stores deal with fish, various
vegetables, meat, milk, snacks and some other non-food items. The retailers that deal small
grocery products offer grocery products. Different food retailers sell their food products
depending on the size of the area and choices of the local people. Now a day, some retailers
take orders on internet and they deliver products to customers.
P3. Explain how developments in the consumer market have impacted on food retailing
Developments in the customers’ choice and lifestyle have impacted the food retail market
vastly. The customers’ changes, changes in the environment and the changes in the
technology have impacted the food retail industry vastly. With the changing needs of the
customers, the food retailers have innovated new food items. For demand of prompt services,
the retailers have introduced e-marketing and online delivery and such others. Thus, the

P4. Describe how health, safety and hygiene legislation impacts on food retailers
According to the health and safety at work Act, 1974, in the UK, all the food retail employers
should look after the employees from the chances of any harm in their work place. The food
retail employees should be provided a healthy environment and they should be protected
from any accidental death and injury in their workplace. To compensate financially the
employees, the employer should cover the employees in an insurance policy. The local health
and safety officer should investigate whether all the rules and regulations regarding the
health and safety are maintained or not (Wertheim-Heck et al., 2015). If there is any
discrepancy, the retailer should rectify it. All the food items of a food retailer should be
standard and should be made in a hygienic way so that they do not harm the consumers.
P5. Explain how food retailers are meeting their social, ethical, environmental and
corporate social responsibilities.
Food retailers have a great responsibility to the society they exist with their business motive.
The retailers should be concerned with the social changes and should modify their business
policy. They should produce healthy products to gain sustainability in the business. The food
retailers should perform some corporate social responsibilities through donations to weaker
sections of the society (Epstein, 2018).
Conclusion:
Food retail industry is one of the major retail industries in the UK and all over the world. The
size of a food retailer, the business tactics, their products, policies depend on the size of the
business. Welfare in the society through corporate social responsibilities is one more
responsibility of a food retailer.
