AI Summary
This project analyzes the food sustainability index, addressing the critical issue of increasing global food demand and its impact on sustainability. The project identifies the main issues affecting food sustainability, focusing on metrics such as food quality, availability, affordability, nutrient quality, and waste reduction. The research design includes a systematic literature review and data collection from open sources to assess the influence of these metrics on food security and sustainability. The methodology involves detailed analysis of each metric, expert reviews, and interviews to develop an effective food sustainability index applicable to both farm-produced and store-bought food. The project aims to identify strategies to ensure sustainable food resources, meet future demand, and mitigate food scarcity challenges, providing a comprehensive framework for measuring and improving food sustainability.

1ANALYSIS OF FOOT PRINT INDEX PROJECT
1. Problem Statement
One of the most important issues of modern world is increasing population and demand for
resources of which demand for food is of prime importance. Therefore, sustainability of food
has become an important issue in this context. Countries around the world are recognizing
this issue and providing attention to this as well. However, lack of proper strategies for
ensuing food sustainability is a major concern. Although there are framework for measuring
sustainability of food, this framework is either not effective or complex to apply. Therefore, it
requires an effective framework that provides different metrics and measurements regarding
food sustainability so that it is easier to apply food index. This is not enough to ensure that
food index is easier to apply, but it should also help people to analyse diverse metrics for
holistic food system. Therefore, it is important to design an effective framework for design
and application of food sustainability index. It needs to provide context to determine
sustainability and security of food while considering different metrics in accordance with
requirements of food system where this framework is applicable. Therefore, this framework
provided in this context needs to be applicable for variety of food system and various features
that define these food systems.
2. Project Purpose Statement
The purpose of the project is to identify what are the main issues that are affecting food
sustainability around the world and measure those issues in details so that it is easier to
design strategies for managing those issues. The purpose is to identify how to ensure food
sustainability through effective measurement of important aspects related to food
sustainability and also food security as well. In this context, the project also aims to identify
what are the most common factors that is responsible for food scarcity around the world and
how it affects food sustainability as this would provide a comprehensive idea how to ensure

food sustainability through effective strategies identified through research done in this
context. This project aims to identify what are the required features for designing a
framework that is not only effective but also easier to apply sustainability features with
respect to food resources that are available for people. Therefore, overall purpose of this
project is to identify what are the issues regarding food scarcity, its effect on food
sustainability and strategies available for ensuing that food resources are not only capable of
meeting demand for food but it is sustainable as well.
3. Research Objectives
The objective of this research is to design a framework that is capable of measuring
sustainability of food. Increasing demand for food resources has led to scarcity for food in
various countries around the world. Therefore, it is not only enough to identify what are the
issues that is effecting food sustainability, it is also important to identify which factors are
mostly responsible for affecting food sustainability. If food sustainability is not ensured, then
it will be not possible to ensure food supply for future generation. Therefore, identifying
issues regarding food availability and how these issues contribute to lack of food
sustainability requires extensive research.
Therefore, objective of this research is to design food sustainability metrics and measurement
with a special focus on food produced in farms and food products that are purchased from
stores. This food sustainability metrics and measurement will provide an index that will help
in measuring sustainability of nutrient food with reference to sustainability metrics
considered for this research.
The objective of this research is to measure overall food and how it impact human health.
Along with this, another objective of this research is to analyse its influence on social,
economic and also environmental sustainability. In this context, some metrics will be

identified as well. These metrics are quality of food, food availability, food affordability,
quality of nutrients, and expectancy of food and reduction of food waste as well.
4. Research Design
An effective research design is an important aspect of any research project. It provides
framework for executing any type of research. It provides plan to find answer to research
questions and therefore, identifying a proper research design is of prime importance for
ensuing that the research is effective and efficient as well. When research design is proper it
is easier to identify what types of data is required in research and also helps in identifying
how to collect those data.
In this research, the main aspect is to identify what are the aspects that contribute to food
scarcity. If issues regarding food scarcity is identified, then it will provide a comprehensive
idea regarding what are the issues in food sustainability. However, in this research for
analysing food sustainability, special focus will be provided on food produced in farms and
food products that are purchased from stores. An extensive analysis will be provided in this
context. Data will be collected for all of the five metrics considered in this research which are
quality of food, food availability, food affordability, quality of nutrients, and expectancy of
food and reduction of food waste as well.
These metrics will be first analysed in details through systematic literature review for
identifying how these metrics affects food security and food sustainability. Therefore, this is
an important aspect of this research design and therefore, it needs to be considered as well.
After this data is collected for these five metrics, then comparison is made between these
metrics to identify effect of these metrics on food sustainability. This comparison is provided
to design strategies for food sustainability.

5. Methodology
In this research, at first systematic literature has been conducted for obtaining a detailed
overview of each of the metrics that are considered in this research. These metrics are quality
of food, food availability, food affordability, quality of nutrients, and expectancy of food and
reduction of food waste as well. Each of these metrics is important for designing this index
for food sustainability.
Food quality is an important aspect of food safety and food security. In order to ensure that
food resources are effective in ensuring food sustainability, it is essential to provide quality
food. Quality of food is also essential in reducing food waste and food nutrition as well.
Therefore, food quality is an important metrics. It is not effective to ensure food quality and
food availability, if it is not available for consumption for people. Therefore, along with food
quality, availability of food is another important aspect of food sustainability. In this context,
it will be analysed with reference to various literature how food quality and food availability
affect food sustainability and food security which is an important issue regarding demand of
food resources. If food quality and food availability are ensured, in order to ensure food
sustainability, food resource needs to be affordable, otherwise it is not possible to implement
food sustainability strategies. This metric will be analysed in details as well. For this previous
research articles will be considered to identify how this metric is related to food sustainability
index to ensure that application of this index for measuring food sustainability is effective
and efficient as well. This food index is applied for food produced in farms and food products
that are purchased from stores, therefore, analysis of nutrient quantity and how it is applicable
in food sustainability is important in this context. Two other important metrics that are
important for measuring food sustainability are food expectancy and reduction of food waste
as well.

After analysing these metrics in details through systematic literature review, data will be
collected regarding these metrics and for this open data would be considered. Open data
refers to data that are available to access freely and also allowed for distributing with others.
Literature review will be conducted for these metrics for identifying open data that are valid
and reliable for enhancing quality of this research as well. Although open data is available for
free access, this data is not always validated. Therefore, it is important to validate these data
and review as well. Therefore, after data is collected then these data will be reviewed through
standard data validation techniques to ensure that data is authentic, otherwise this will affect
quality of this research. Therefore, this is an important aspect of this research as well.
After analysis of these metrics, description of each of these metrics will be provided to
experts for review to ensure that these metrics are effective for designing an index for
measuring food sustainability. Interview will be also be conducted with experts to identify
how to apply these metrics to design an effective food sustainability index while considering
food that are produced in farms and also food products that are purchased from stores as
well.
