INTRODUCTION
Study skills for higher education basically denotes to a process when students prepare for
higher courses and studies they have to emphasize on many aspects to acquire new skills and
learn new activities. This development of skills helps in boosting confidence of students and
same time also very helpful in development of overall skills for long term period. Studies for
higher education needs that person has to be more intellectual and has ability to think critically.
This assignment is based on what basically deep learning means and its importance for a student
who is studying in foundation year, how it can be developed in an individual and after effective
study has been done finally conclusions are drawn based on above mentioned topics(Rusk,
2015).

Concept of Deep learning
Deep learning is a method which is basically dealing with importance of having high
thinking for students. This has a emphasis on present knowledge possessed by students and then
what is ability of student to learn new things. Deep learning basically referred to a process in
which a student is able to understand a learning content and at same time student is bale to build
relationship among existing knowledge and new knowledge. Deep learning refers to primary
knowledge and also it is a mega-cognitive process of reconstructing existing knowledge. It can
also be regarded as a process of learning used for solving various problems arising in the process
of learning. Sometimes it is a perception that deep learning is confused with surface learning.
Students generally adopt surface learning and they feel that what they have done is deep
learning(Park and Kellis, 2015) . This misconception leads to understanding of concept but in a
basic way and not in detail.
Importance of Deep learning for foundation year student:
Foundation year student means a student who is in his initial year of studies, it is very crucial
stage as this sets the base of knowledge which student will gain in his further years of studies.
Deep learning has many benefits for students as discussed below:

ï‚· High order learning: Deep learning helps students in their foundation year to set a very
strong base which is very helpful to them in their further years to understand concepts
more deeply when level becomes more difficult(Nielsen, 2015).ï‚· Self Adjusting: When a student is participating in deep learning then it becomes easier for
them to learn self adjusting strategies. There are many situations being faced by a student
in their academic life which has to be dealt by them deep learning helps a student in
dealing with such problems and developing effective and timely solutions also with
knowledge they posses(Liao and Carneiro, 2016).ï‚· No repetition of knowledge: In case of deep learning the most unique feature is that there
is no repetition of knowledge in this type of learning. Deep learning is a complete
different concept from surface learning though these two interact with each other, but
then also there is difference between both. Surface learning is more of a repetitive
process and no in depth knowledge can be gained from surface learning. Deep learning is
a further step of surface learning which means that a student cannot do deep learning
until he has done surface learning.ï‚· Development of understanding level: Deep learning is a process which can be used by
students to develop their existing level of understanding. This quality will help every
student in their further years of studying, as when a person is able to study a concept and
then understand it this is one quality which can lad to reduction of problems arising while
studying.ï‚· Application of knowledge: It is not enough for students that they are studying various
concept, but to with changing requirements it has become necessary that retaining of
knowledge and its application can also be done.
ï‚· Memorisation of Knowledge: For application of knowledge it is necessary that student is
able to properly memorize it and retain it for long term. If there will be strong techniques
of memorizing things developed by a student then it will automatically lead to correct and
timely application. Deep learning is something which can help a student to develop the
skills to memorize whatever they are reading and increase their capacity to understand
various prospectives(Lenz, Lee and Saxena, 2015).

Ways through which deep learning can be developed:
Deep learning is a concept which involves learning with ability to develop high order thinking, it
is not possible that students will be able to easily adopt this in their learning process. There is a
cognitive process through which this ability of deep learning can be adopted and developed by a
student. There are various ways being discussed below, which can help in development of Deep
learning by a student:
Study new concepts:It is essential that for a student to develop deep learning that they
study new concepts and understand them properly. Passive learning and elaboration of readings
is something which is very important to develop deep learning for any student.
Critical study: Surface learning is a type of study in which basic analysis and reading is
done by a student. In case of deep learning its is important that there is critical and in depth
analysis done by student. It is necessary on part of student to take some initiatives to analyse
critically all facts and information which is present in whatever they are studying. Extracting of
knowledge from a particular study is also a part of deep learning which must be done by a
student to enhance and develop their level of learning.
Primary cognitive structure:All learners must try to develop a cognitive structure at
primary stage of their learning which is very important. This acts as a a basis and guideline
which helps student to enhance their level of knowledge. Various learners can make study of
various concept and according to that facts and knowledge which is studied by them they can
make attempts to consolidate this knowledge into a primary cognitive structure(LeCun, Bengio
and Hinton, 201).
Re-construction of existing knowledge: Many times there can be a situation when
student experiences that already thee is existing knowledge possessed related to topic, in such
case there is a need to re construct that knowledge by using a cognitive strategy. Primary stage of
knowledge is part of deep learning and there is a process which involves reconstruction of
existing knowledge. This is in some situations that present knowledge have to be reframed and
reconstructed then in depth study is automatically being done. This helps student in developing
intellect and their overall skills which is very useful in developing capabilities of deep learning.
Developing thoughts: It is also a necessary need and also a requirement for students who
want to develop capability of deep learning, that they are bale to develop and try to think new

concepts and ideas. Whenever a person is trying to learn something or develop a capability,
generation of new thoughts becomes very important. These new ideas can help a person to
understand a concept and then be part of deep learning(Lakhani and Sundaram, 2017).

Conclusions based on above discussed key points
From above mentioned concept of deep learning and its importance for students in
development and enhancement of their knowledge there are various conclusion which can be
made in this regard. It has been clear that deep learning is not a one step but it is a process in
which there are several steps included and all these steps take place one after other. All together
they complete this procedure of Deep learning. when all of these steps have been successfully
completed then a student is able to develop capability of deep learning. It is not easy for any
student to develop this quality very easily they have to make lot of changes in their way of
reading, analysing different aspects, making analysis & interpretations and after that reaching to
various conclusions(Hoffer and Ailon, 2015).
It as also been analysed from above report that Deep learning requires on part of every
student to develop quality of talking strong initiatives, reason behind this is such initiatives will
help them in making efforts to understand their study in depth and gain maximum benefit from
it. Apart from this, it is also necessary that students must made understand what is overall benefit
if they are able to adopt deep learning instead of surface learning, both types of learning are
interrelated to each other. Every person who wants to reach the stage of deep learning has to go
through surface learning also. Major difference between two is level of deepness to which study
is done by the student. Every learner who is doing deep learning will be able to automatically
understand knowledge and then application of that knowledge can also be done easily. All
learners who will be able to adopt deep learning will be able to understand, transfer, construct,
critically evaluate, integrate and finally apply knowledge which they are reading if the are
adopting deep learning as a technique of their study.
