Answer to Question Number 2:-
The term ‘civilizing mission’ was used by the French for their purpose of colonizing
the foreign lands where native people, who followed their own indigenous culture, inhabited
(Johnson, 2017). The term has been used in this sugar-coated format to hide the atrocities
imposed by the dominant culture over the colonized people, especially in the different regions
of Africa. Algeria was one of the prime targets of this ‘civilizing mission’. Through this

activity, the French attempts were not only limited to administrative conquests, but they also
tried to impose the French culture over the natives, saying that those cultures bordered around
uncivilized nature. This dissemination of the native culture was craftily carried out by the
French by imposition of their own values on written words which were gradually started to be
constructed in the format of a cultural and linguistic amalgamation.
Answer to Question Number 3:-
In Canada, ‘Official Bilingualism’ refers to the legally equal rights shared by the
English and French language in the Canadian state of laws, due to a huge number of French
speaking people residing in Canada (Dicks & Genesee, 2017). The root of such a high rate of
Francophone in Canada dates back to the time of French Settlements in the region. There had
been widespread chaos due to the co-existence of multiple linguistic and cultural groups in
the country. With an enhancement of the French lingo in Canada over the years, the Royal
Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism gradually gave the French an official status
in the country. However, a person is supposed to stick to any one of the two languages when
dealing with governmental or legal matters in order to avoid confusion.

Dear Dylan,
The francophone culture which arrived in Canada with the first French settlers had
survived over the ages, and continues to exist at full bloom in the city of Quebec. The city
offers tourists with a beautiful admixture of English and French culture. The French culture

can be noticed in the art and architecture of Quebec in museums like ‘Musée national des
beaux-arts du Québec’, festivals like ‘New France Festival’ or the more literary fest ‘Festival
Québec en toutes lettres’. You may also visit places like ‘Centre de valorisation du
patrimoine vivant’ to get a glance of how the culture, music and dance are immersed in
French culture. The local French communities can offer you an in-depth view into the mixed
culture and more essential information about how it came into being. The French culture can
also be seen in the film and theatre of Quebec.
