INTRODUCTION
Functional area of business involves, finance, human resources, strategies, technologies,
and operations, though which the business can run perfectly. This report speaks about a local
company called IOM electronics ltd, which has presence in Manchester and Liverpool. In this
report, various functional areas of business has been defined. Besides this what qualities are
being needed in the employees to perform these business functions have been elaborated in this
report.
1 various functional areas of business
Functional areas are the backbone of any company, without these functions business
can't accomplish its goals and the business get failed to impose its strategies and polices in the
business (Nalawade, More and Bhola, 2019). As per the case study, John has to be aware about
the different functional areas of business.
Human resource
It is the most important and well known department of any organisation or company. This
function of business works for the hiring, recruitment and do the staffing for the company. But
the very important function of this department is to make sure that they hire right candidate for
the right department. They have to ensure that the person who the HR department is recruiting
must have all the skills, qualification, knowledge and eligibility for the post. Beside these, HR
department has to look after the compensation, well-fare and safety of the employees. They have
to provide them appropriate training top the new and existing employees as well so that they can
enhance their efficiency and perform their job effectively.
Finance department
This department is known to be the lifeblood of any department because they take care
about all the matter of the business which are related to money. Without this department business
can't operate its day to day activities (Eriksson, Robertson and Näppä, 2020). The two major
jobs which this department do is that they manage all the money which is coming into the
business and also manages the money which is going out from the business. Aside from this,
finance department make budget and forecast about the expenses of the company as well. In the

absence of finance department other department also can't perform their job, as finance
department provides them fund to conduct their activities.
Marketing department
Without customer, no one business can grow and survive in the market. The main
function and responsibility of marketing department is to bring customer to the business. To
gain customers, marketing department make policies and strategies to promote the products of
the company (Shao, Weng and He, 2017). This department is not just promote the products of
the company but also helps the business or company to set mission and vision, because they
work in the market and know all the trend and conditions of the market. Besides this, marketing
department also promote the products of the company via social media. Except all these
marketing department collects feedback and reviews from the customer about the products of
business and company, on the basis of such data they make changes in the product as well.
Production
This department plays a vital role in the success of the business k, as the converts the
raw- material into finished goods for business. The major aim of this department is to produce
quality product for the business so that company can earn profitability and reputation among the
customers. Along with quality they have to make sure about the quantity of the products as well.
If they produce large quantity of products more than its demand then business may have to suffer
huge loss. So this is the another important functional area of business.
Informational technology
This department has different value in the business, as they are responsible for bringing
modern and advanced technology in the business. They develop different technology for the
business so that the employees can do their work effectively. Aside this, IT department protect
the business from cyber crime and data hacking so that, the competitors can't steal their valuable
data and records (Ruekert and Walker Jr, 2020). Apart from this, IT department also stores the
valuable data of the customers so that whenever any other department need data, they can
communicate with IT department.
Research & Development
This department is known to be the heart of any business as they focus on bringing
innovation to the business so that the company remain competitive. They also remain present in

the market and follow the trend of the market and looks after the needs of the costumer so that
they can develop innovative product and rule the market.
As per the case study IOM electronics Ltd must have this department so that this company can
grow in the market.
2 Skills needed by the employees to work in functional department
Marketing department
To work in a marketing department any individual and employee must have the ability to
understand the needs and wants of their potential customers. Along with this marketer must have
excellent communication skill and convincing power to describe the feature of product to their
target audience. Apart from this marketer must have critical thinking and must be handy with the
problem-solving skills (Rochford and Rudelius, 2019). The main objective of marketing
department is to increase the sell of their product so the person who is working in this
department must have strong connection and networking. The very basic feature, the marketer
should have is effective team work skill.
Human resource department
To be a part of Human resource department a person must have excellent communication
skill, as the HR presents the company to employee so they must have excellent verbal skills.
Besides this, to perform the role of HR, a person must have administrative skills because HR has
to maintain the record of leave, absentees, salary, absence records and payroll. One of the key
feature of HR is to provide advise to employees, whenever they face any issue in the company,
HR is there to guide them what is right and what is wrong for them. As the main function of HR
department is to provide training to employees so the HR must have coaching skill, so that they
can guide the employees about the policies of the company.
Finance department
This is the very important department of any company, to work in this department
individual must have interpersonal and problem solving skill. Apart from this, they have basic
maths skills as well because they have to deal with money (Satyendra, 2020). The person who is
working in finance department must have qualification in accounting and finance so that the can
plans and strategies where they have to spend money and where they can save the unnecessary

expenses of the company. Aside this, the person should have knowledge of IT software so that
they can complete their task in given time period.
Information technology
In this department employee must have well-knowledge about clouding, web service and
sale force integration through which they can easily handle problems in the company.
Technology department employee have some basic information about their team working and
web designing which is most important for them in making their websites more attractive in the
eyes of customer (Dean, 2017). Communication skills and problem solving skills is also
important for them. Employee must have knowledge about Microsoft excel and word in which
they have to work. Connecting with someone along with following the career path is more
similar for their workforce in company.
Production department
To be the part of production department employee or manager must have time
management skills, active listening, coordination and critical thinking. Also, have knowledge
about their complex problem solving in which they can have identifying complex related to
company and reviewing the various information that are required to develop as well evaluate
solutions for organization. Learning strategies' and services orientation needs to design products
as per the requirements of customer. Production department employee must be active learning in
which they have to understand both the information about the current and future decision-making
furthermore problem-solving in organization.
Customer services department
This is most important for company in making their customer satisfaction and happy with
their products along with services that are provided. Worker working in customer services must
be persuasive speaking skills and empathy with their words. They must have ability to use
positive language towards their customer. Employee skilled need to keep patience, valued loyalty
and understanding the needs of company along with that also have clear communication skills
and company also need to hire the good communicator furthermore give accurate training to
employee working in customer service team (Aguinis and Burgi-Tian, 2021). Taking
responsibility i.e. most important for providing solution, while taking responsibilities' employee
come to know what they have to do and what not to moreover easy to handle their customer.

From the above it had been concluded that business works with having various areas in
organization such as finance, marketing, human resources, research and development as well IT
for providing different things what is happening around their business. Skilled and well-
knowledge are required for doing their jobs completion in their department, and they must be had
knowledge about each field. Organization working in any department need to make their sub
function along with giving some authority and responsibilities in which they can develop their
business while by implementing proper planning.
