Importance of Nursing Education
Introduction
In this essay, a discussion will be held about the importance of nursing education and the
overall educational goals. There will be highlighting of my opinions in the job market according
to the level of my education. I will review the IOM Future of Nursing Recommendations in the
achievement of higher educational levels. A description of the professional certification I would
like to pursue will be done with reasons and a given timeline for the accomplishment of these
goals. The significance of increasing the level of education and how it affects the
competitiveness in the job market and the role in the future of the nursing will also be discussed.
Further, there will be a discussion on the relationship of the continuing nursing education to
Standards for Practice and Code of Ethics, knowledge, attitudes, and competency. Finally, there
will be detailing of on whether continuation of the nursing education should be mandatory or
voluntary.
The body
There are unmeasurable significancies of nursing education. Nursing education ensures
that there is longevity in life that is the life expectancy increases because of the improved health
literacy and improved quality of nursing services in all the health facilities especially the aging
care and person-centered care (Brull& Finlayson, 2016). These services are facilitated
adequately by the availability of better nursing education. There are more complex health issues
generally and this calls for better provision of better nursing services because the challenges met
can not be dealt with without well-educated personnel. Lack of the appropriate education or
provision of poor education can bring many issues of mistakes in the nursing practice and these
are costly to the people’s health. Promotion of nursing knowledge can eliminate all the errors

associated with the provision of higher quality health care. Nursing education is a tool which
equips the trainees with the understanding of the best practices of delivering care, the
commitment of being professional in the nursing field, being up-to-date concerning the nursing
technology, and committing to the provision of the best care to all the patients seeking care.
Nursing education is a very powerful professional tool and helps the trainees in the application of
the best skills which impact the peoples' health positively (Shin et al., 2015).
The educational goals of the nursing are many and they include; pursuance of a good
state of well-being by the restoration, maintenance, and the promotion of human health. The
achievement of these goals is done by the commitment in the development of the nursing
knowledge and skills in the field of therapeutic care and many other professional and leadership
roles in the relevant field (Jefferies et al., 2018). Additionally, there are other goals which are
associated with nursing education and they include; the understanding of the functional health
programs for the patients, the integration of the scientific knowledge and critical thinking while
solving issues in the clinical field, and the building of a relationship which is healthy
collaborative with the care team in the faculty of practice (Zaccagnini & Pechacek, 2019). Also,
the establishment of professional nursing which has all the ethical and legal responsibilities,
fostering the national and international contexting leadership scope, and the demonstration of the
global leadership skills in the nursing field (Day-Black, 2015).
The Institute of Medicine thoroughly examines the nursing practice and there are
recommendations which re given in order to change the actions of the nursing team, change the
patient populations, and a central focus on the intersection between the diverse health needs. The
main intent of these recommendations is to promote the health of the individuals through the
contributions which the nurses can deliver (Altman, Butler & Shern, 2016). The

recommendations include; there should be full extension of the nursing education and training,
there should be an academic progression by the achievement of higher levels of education and
training through better educational systems, there should be partnership between other
professionals, and physicians to help in redesigning of the health care and finally, effectivity in
policymaking, and workforce planning by better information structuring and better data
collection (Presti, 2016).
A professional certification I would like to pursue in future is Oncology which deals with
the treatment of tumors. The reason I would like to major on this role of Oncology as a nurse is
because of the prevalence of cancer in the globe. Treatment of tumors prevents the development
of many types of cancers. The other reason is to gain competence in the same field and better
experience of nursing practice and deliver quality services in the improvement of quality life.
The certification timeline is four years and includes palliative care, symptom management,
treatment modalities and many other nursing oncology practices (Hortobagyi et al., 2017).
According to the American Nurses Association, the scope and standards of practice show
how the nurses should competently, and ethically practice in their field, because they are said to
be authoritative statements. There are no specific prescriptions on these statements, hence the
nurses do not get how they should perform a given task or undertake a role from them. Their sole
purpose is guidance of performance of the tasks competently. The nursing specialty
organizations develop the scope and standards of practice in consultation to ANA with provision
of a system for the expectations of professionalism and critical thinking.
There are many advantages which are comprised of higher nursing education or
continuation of nursing education. Continuing with the education in this field improves the
knowledge and the skills about patient care. The main benefits of the improvement of the

education level are classified into three categories. Firstly, the nurses are able to do specification
of the broad field of nursing and narrow it down to the area of interest. Advancement of
education comes in many forms where one acquires more information and better administration
skills on a specific subject. The importance of speciation is that people get more certifications
and higher ranks of leadership in the field of practice (Shin et al., 2015).
Secondly, the continuation of nursing education can lead to the improvement of the
nurse’s lifestyle. After obtaining a higher degree or a masters in nursing or having many
certifications and other educational programs can support the nurses to have a very competitive
chance in this field and obtain higher-paying positions. This increased payment is due to the
marketability and the demand they have in the nursing field hence elevating their standards of
living and their lifestyles.
In the current job market in nursing, increasing the level of education gives an individual
a higher hand of competitiveness. The higher the level of education, means the higher the level
of competence and practice; and this is beneficial because they are easily preferred. When one
advances their nursing education, they familiarize with the most current innovations in the
nursing field, and hence, having a better service provision and quality life to patients. This gives
them better pays and higher ranks in nursing management as an added advantage.
The continuation of nursing education should be mandatory to keep up with quality
health care delivery and better individual and patient life outcomes.Continuation with the nursing
education makes the nurses stay up to date with the best practices and all the modern scientific
innovations in this profession. The filed of nursing has always been having scientific changes in
the practices and the standards. With continued education it gives the nurses with more evidence-
based practice and merging the skills with the new technological advancements which help in

promotion of the quality of life and mortality. The fresh information gained and implementation
gives the patients better health care outcomes.
Conclusion
In conclusion, there are many importances in nursing education. According to this essay,
nursing education improves the quality of life and mortality of life. Improved literacy is essential
for all nurses in the practice field. The main intent of the Institute of Medicine recommendations
is to promote the health of the individuals through the contributions which the nurses can deliver.
Oncology certification being the main field of interest can help in many fields as a nurse. Finally,
the continuation of nursing education should be mandatory to keep up with quality health care
delivery and better individual and patient life outcomes.
