1. Describe the work of the Robert Wood Foundation
Committee Initiative that led to the IOM report, "Future of
Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health."
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative refers to the future of nursing
since its beginning to streamline the nursing field by shedding light on the critical role that
nurses need to play to ensure a healthy society in the coming years (Altman, Butler & Shern,
2016). This committee played various important roles in the creation of IOM. Firstly, this
committee has undertaken an efficient approach to IMO for initiating a program that will
streamline the future of nursing. This has been done by creating the report including clear
recommendations for the future of nursing. Recommendations, mentioned in the report of the
committee included the importance of recognizing the vital role of nurses in delivering the
best quality care to all patients. Besides, the committee have mentioned about the important
role of nurses as mentioned for larger workplace that needs to be conceptualized (Altman,
Butler & Shern, 2016). Additionally, the committee has proposed the restructuring of nursing
education. It has mentioned about nursing schools can enhance their capacity by including
more efficient nursing faculties. These actions were important for getting well-baked and
well-groomed nurses as more people would get the opportunities of learning nursing practices
for their future nursing career (Cherry & Jacob, 2014).
2. Outline the four "Key Messages" that structure the IOM
Report recommendations. Explain how these have transformed
or influenced nursing practice, nursing education and training,
nursing leadership, and nursing workforce development.
Provide examples.
The IOM recommendations have mentioned a key message that creating common
grounds on the basis of existing health policies, can help to streamline the nursing field. It

was the first key message that can be found from the IOM recommendations. This action is
potent enough to eradicate the restrictions from the scope of nursing practice. On the other
hand, it has the power to enhance interpersonal collaboration. This aspect can help
stakeholders of healthcare industry to work as a team to build a common ground of practice
(Duffy, 2018). It can be stated that the establishment of a common ground of practice can
provide benefits to healthcare professionals, community people, and policymakers (Duffy,
2018).
Another recommendation has been made by saying that engagement of nurses in
redesigning nursing care must be promoted. It was the second key message that has been
derived from the IOM recommendations. It is possible to promote nursing leadership through
this promotion as nurses will get the power to take an active part in the decision-making
process. For example, in terms of government healthcare organizations, nurses work in an
executive position and they are allowed to make decisions regarding redesign of the
healthcare process. If nurses get the change of working in an executive position, they can get
the opportunity to learn leadership skills and the process of leading (Gillespie et al., 2018).
The third key message has been derived from the IOM message postulates about the
priority of diverse nursing staff. The importance of prioritizing a diverse nursing workforce
cannot be denied as it will allow ensuring positive transformation through workplace
development. Due to this reason, nurses will be potent to deal with patients from all cultural
backgrounds. For example, cultural training can help nurses to acquire effective skills that
can help to communicate with people from any cultural background.
Finally, the last key message has been found and it states about promoting professional
skills of nurses through continuous learning. Continuous learning can help nurses to
transform their skills in a positive way as they get enough opportunities for practical training.

For example, for both registered nurses and those taking an associate degree, entry-level and
baccalaureate degrees can be lowered. This action has been ensured for allowing majority of
nurses to have a baccalaureate degree (Altman, Butler & Shern, 2016).
3. Describe the role of state-based action coalitions. Provide a
description of how these coalitions help advance the goals
specified in the IOM report, "Future of Nursing: Leading
Change, Advancing Health."
Different purposes are served by state-based coalition in the country. The creation of an
environment that is conducive for all nurses is one of the main roles that this coalition plays.
This helps the nurses to provide quality care to the best of their ability (National Academies
of Sciences, Engineering & Medicine, 2016). Different goals have been identified in the IMO
report including preparing nurses for meeting the needs of patients and enhancement of
teamwork in the nursing field. Nurses are enabled to perform their roles in a different way
with the help of state-based coalitions. Campaigning is considered as one of the ways for the
implementation of the recommendations in all the U.S states. As described the objectives and
goals are on the basis of recommendations hypothecated and described in the report of IMO.
Hence, campaigns focusing on the implementation of stipulated recommendations help in the
advancement of goals.
4. Conduct research regarding initiatives upon which action
coalition of Washington DC is working. Explain two initiatives
forwarded by the action coalition. Elaborate on the ways these
initiatives can advance the profession of nursing.
At present, the state coalition of Washington DC is working upon a few initiatives for
promotion and advancement of the profession of nursing. Among these initiatives, one
influences nurses to increase their commitment to providing quality care without any

discrimination to all. In U.S disparities and discrimination exists in the healthcare service and
it can be seen that discrimination in health sector in this country is associated with ethnicity
(Perez, Nichols & Quinn, 2018). Hence, this initiative state coalition of this state influence
nurses to eliminate discrimination in healthcare. Hence, quality care can be provided to all
without any disparity. In future, burden of disease in the country can be reduced by avoiding
any discrimination in this sector and quality of nursing profession can improve.
Conducting campaigns for implementation IMO recommendations successfully is another
essential initiative. It is an important aim of IMO to elevate and streamline the profession of
nursing in coming years (In Oermann, 2015). Hence, the future of the profession of nursing
will be improved to a greater extent by proper application of these recommendations.
5. Provide a description of barriers to advancement, which at
present exist in Washington DC. Give an explanation of how
nursing advocates in DC state helps to overcome these
barriers.
Licensure and state practice are identified as a barrier regarding advancement at
present in Washington DC. State licensure operates nursing practice and this creates a
challenge for NPS to practice well to the best of education and training. According to the
laws of state licensure, it is essential for NPs to have a practicing license. But, in fact, in the
US only a third of nurses have undertaken the practice laws and followed the rules of practice
authority licensure (In Nelson & In Staggers, 2014).
For mitigating the barriers, advocates of Washington DC have suggested with some
policy initiatives, which focus on ensuring that nurses get the opportunity to practice to the
best of education and training. For example, national nursing organizations like the American
