INTRODUCTION
Business studies refers to the study of operational and departmental functions of whole
organization. The report is mostly based on the secondary research which includes books,
journals, magazines and so on. The company which is chosen for understanding the work culture
and business studies is TESCO. It is a multinational retail store and is headquartered in UK. The
company was established in 1919 and it is the third largest retailer in the world in terms of
generating revenue. This report is prepared on the basis of major motivational theories which is
utilized by organization for managing the employees in workplace. Effective motivational
theories helped the organization to increase their productivity in long run.
TASK
Examine and analyse different motivational theories you think will work for Jack discount stores
and satisfy TESCO management
Motivational theory basically refers to those theory which is used by organization for
encouraging employees in work area which leads to enhance their productivity Ren and Liu,
2021). The theories which are used by TESCO for maintaining their culture through employees
are described below -
Maslow's motivation theory – This theory is mostly focused on the desires and needs of the
employees which is highly essential for live their life decently. According to this model the
needs of human being are divided into five stages which are described below-
Physiological needs – It basically refers to basic or essential needs of the employees
which are consumed on daily basis (de Vasconcellos, Garrido and Parente, 2019). It
includes air, food, cloths, shelter and so on.
Safety needs – It refers to the security and safety of job in organization which is highly
essential for employees and their family for living the life happily.
Love and belongings – in this stage emotional connections are mostly involved with the
senior employees and family.
Esteem – Self esteem refers to the employees respect and reputation which is highly
essential between society or in organization.
Self actualization - It is the highest level in maslow's model and according to this stage
employees analyse their own ability and potential with the help of various task in the job.

Herzberg's motivation theory – This theory is also known as two factor theory and it is mostly
focused on the motivation and hygiene in the workplace area which are described below -
Motivator – In motivation top level management encourage the workers through various
strategies. It includes financial benefits such as incentives, bonuses, increments and so
on.
Hygiene – It basically refers to maintaining safety standards in workplace which is
highly essential for employees for doing the work systematically.
Advantages and disadvantages of motivational theories
Advantages of Marslow's theory -
Simple to understand – The biggest highlight of this theory are it is very easy to
understand by organization (Howard, Wood and Stonebraker, 2018). And according to
this theory company must maintain flexibility in the working hours of the employees.
Relevant in all field – It means that this theory is applicable in all organizational
activities. Due to this reason basic needs of the employees are easily fulfilled in time.
Disadvantages of Marslow's theory -
All individuals are not thinking in same way – The biggest disadvantage in this theory
are the thinking of all individual are different in organization for doing the job (Mol and
Brandl, 2018). It leads to decrease the productivity of organization.
Difficulty to measure - Due to difference in level of job satisfaction of all employees
organization face difficulties to analyse the performance of organization.
Advantages of Herzberg's theory -
Emphasis on motivation – According to this theory company are mostly focused on
encourage the employees within the organization. Because motivation helped the
employees of TESCO to facilitate best suggestion to the consumers to purchase right
product.
Money is treated secondary – This theory mostly considered on job promotion and
relationship between the employees rather than money. Because maintaining good
relationship helped the employees to do the work energetically.

No connectivity between productivity and job satisfaction – The major disadvantage
in this theory are it is not compulsory that only satisfied employees are able to increase
the work efficiency of organization.
Subjective in nature – Other problem is that this theory is subjective in nature.
Therefore it is necessary for management that they must reduce discrimination between
the employees salary, promotion and so on.
Theories which is useful for enhancing the productivity of TESCO and Jack store -
Marslow's theory useful for organization because according to this theory management
must provide proper facilities to employees such as establishing canteen for maintaining 24
availability of food at the time of doing job. In this theory safety rules and architecture are well
established in organization which is helpful for employees to do the work in safe environment
(Nair and Blomquist, 2019). It also emphasis the management to provide eco friendly
atmosphere to the workers for maintaining good relations with them. With the help of this theory
management easily maintained good behaviour with all employees for maintaining their
reputation in long term. It also helped to in crease the problem solving abilities of employees
with with help of assigning difficult challenges to them.
Herzberg's theory is useful for organization because with the help of motivation
management easily utilize their skills and talents for achieving their vision and objectives for
long time. Management also maintain hygiene standards in organization which is highly essential
for increasing employees work efficiency in workplace for long time (Paul and Criado, 2020).
When the organization maintain the hygiene standards then definitely pollution are not spread.
This theory also helped to increase the buying power of customers in stores due to maintaining
the hygiene standards and good atmosphere. With the high focus on hygiene and motivation the
productivity and profit of company are easily increased. Because employees put full effort to run
the organisational activities smoothly.
CONCLUSION
From the analysis of above information it concluded that effective business study helped
to maintain positive work culture in organization for long time. It also helped to maintain good

relationship between top, middle and lower level employees. For achieving organizational vision,
mission and objectives in long period departments played major role to run their operational
activities smoothly. For managing employees smoothly in workplace company mainly followed
two motivational theories one is Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory and other is Herzberg's
motivation theory. With the help of this theory management easily understand the problems of
employees in workplace and also increased their productivity.
