The Connection between Women and Men
In this text, we find that women are sexualized to a great extend whereby when a woman comes
into view we can expect that a sexual act is just around the corner. This unfairly paints women in
the narrative as promiscuous as they engage in sexual acts with several men. Clara for instance and
her friend Alice find them involved sexually with Patrick. The nun who apparently disappeared
from the bridge was actually saved by Nicholas with whom they ended up, though briefly, in an
intimate moment. We find that men are well included in many other activities such as construction
work, business and so forth but women come in only to be used as sex objects. But even in this
unbalanced portrayal of women, we also find that women wield hypnotic powers and can use their
charm and beauty to manipulate men (Levenson et al 340).
We can see a complex relationship between different cultures and people from diverse origins as
they try to coexist. Colonization brought with it foreigners but even after the country was granted
independence, some foreigners were left behind. Problems like communication barrier arise and
people who speak different languages find it difficult engaging each other in conversation. This
brings about segregation as people will tend to avoid associating with others from different cultures
especially foreign origins. However we see Patrick bridging this gap and showing that people from
different cultural backgrounds can still coexist and be friendly to one another (Wodak and Gertraud
Benke 127). They can work together and live together in harmony. For instance Patrick falls in love
with Alice who is of Macedonian origin. He admires her especially when he listens to her political
opinions. We realize that it is not only foreigners who need to fit in the natives’ way of life but also

the natives need to learn about the foreigners and their cultures and even borrow what is good from
their side.
Alice has a great influence on Patrick and sort of ignites activism and politics in him. We see that
Patrick, with the inspiration from Alice, is set on the path of fighting for rights of workers. He even
threatens to blow up a plant as he protests to Harris who has ignored the plight of workers. At some
point Patrick ends up in jail. This shows the struggle that people fighting against oppression face as
some of them even end up dead. The text reveals that the gap between the rich and the poor brings
about problems in that the rich will always tend to exploit the poor and of course the oppressed will
always try to resist (Homey 107).
Despite the fact that immigrants are playing a major role in development and growth of the cities,
they are still seen as alien and are not acknowledged or appreciated. This people need to be
acknowledged as part of the wider community and appreciated for their contributions towards the
economy. We find that the immigrants are a hardworking lot in that through their toil so much can
be accomplished. Therefore, rather than isolation and discrimination, these immigrants need to be
accepted and given equal opportunities to thrive (Palmer et al 113).
