In this era where it seems that gender including men and women possess their equal
rights and duties towards personal, professional and society. But then also it is very commonly
witnessed in each part of world that women are still fighting for their rights, positions and
respect (International Women’s Day: Reminder women must keep fighting — everywhere, 2018).
International Women Day, in this context, is one of the most widely accepted event at global
level that is been celebrated on 8th March every year. However, in some countries like Canada, it
is been brutally ignore.
There were many movements initiated by women across the globe which led to social
reforms and marches such as #MeToo and #TimesUp. These movement reflects the criticism of
all kinds of sexual harassment and femicide in respect to equal pay and political representation of
women across globe (International Women’s Day: Reminder women must keep fighting
— everywhere, 2018). There is very high rate of femicide within Latin America which also
include the gender-based killing of women from their social movement #NiUnaMas

Around the world, in most of the parts like in Bangladesh where women are depended on
income of male members within their family and this can be determined as one of the reason for
women poverty. All those households which are female headed or are individuals who come
under category of only women worker in their family will be included into poverty households
(Kabeer, 2015). In accordance with data of Latin America and Caribbean Island where
population of single mothers including divorced women, widows and women were under
consensual unions are almost below the poverty line. In UN Report of Human Development
Index during the year 1995 showed about 70% of the women in the world to be poor (Katrina,
2014).
Majority of Feminist economics who have undertaken important concept of gender norms
in relation to gender equality and voice of women all these have been included in specified social
life. Since the year 1990 was marked as the era of importance gained for women’s right all
around the world under which efforts of feminist was to defend sexual and reproductive right of
women (Tanja, 2014). These were all ridded by unholy association which were having support of
various religious and other groups of countries and in leading to relative negligence of injustice
linked with market which is having dominance of men.
There are widespread abuses in Thailand within their fishing fleets which specifically
includes forced labour and rights abusing as well. However there was also many reforms made
by government (Elgström, 2017). Thus, this could be included that women are have relatively
very low status as compared to men in almost all countries of the world and equal status or
gender justice are all included to as myths. There are certainly no exceptions to this myth which
that is a global and common phenomenon as well (Kabeer, 2015). In Canada, this is very bigger
problem related to lower status of women like in gender pay gap, dual burden of household and
employment, sexual harassment and sexual assaults as well.
Further, European Commission has taken several initiatives to enhance the gender equality. In
this respect, #SayNoStopVaw campaign has been initiated to end the violence against women.
Also, Commission has adopted action plan to minimize gender pay gap. Beside this, EU along
with UN has launched Spotlight Initiative for the purpose of addressing gender-based violence.
It has budget of EUR 500 million that aids in eliminating violence against women. The initiative

focused in 5 regions i.e. Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, Pacific and Caribbean
(European Union. 2018).
