DISADVANTAGES OF GENDER INEQUALITY IN HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
Reading One: The meaning of memory
This paper aims to depict the role of television in commercial and economic sectors.
The author here talks about how the television has inspired the mind-set of the people over
the time in making product buying decisions. The television and advertising companies has
gone through several obstacles right after the World War II scenarios (Lipstriz 1986, 18).
The point of view of the author is to present how the television has captured a
destined place in family households. It has been the yardstick of the changes that is
happening in the society (Lipstriz 1986, 19). The importance of television could be
understood by the lines- “Television advertised individual products, but it also provided a
relentless flow of information and persuasion…” (Lipstriz 1986, 19). This lines shows the
reason televisions has become the part of social life in past to present time.
Questions for the class-
1. What is the role of television in modern households?
2. In the age of social media what importance can television had in youngsters?
3. How can the consumer behaviours could be influenced by television?
Reading Two: Hegemony
The purpose of the article is to explain the various forms and norms of hegemony and
how that has been changed with the time. There is a vivid discussion on the theories of the
critics like Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Antonio Gramsci and Stuart Hall (Lull 1995, 34) in
this reading. The author talks about the role of fragility of the concept of hegemony, how the
media consumers has not ‘solely’ resisted the hegemony and ‘complex’, ‘contradictory’ and
‘reflexive’ aspects of the ideologies (Lull 1995, 36).

DISADVANTAGES OF GENDER INEQUALITY IN HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
The point of view of the author is to present various ideas related to hegemony and its
media connection. The process of ‘interpretation’, ‘media content’ usage and
‘communication’, all play an important role in building the hegemony contexts (Lull 1995,
35).
The arguments presented in this study is quite logical and I agree with these. The
complex idea of hegemony could only be interpreted by different perspective. The role of
media in this process cannot be ignored.
Three questions for class-
1. What is your thoughts on Marxist definition of hegemony?
2. How apparent are the hegemony in mass media ideologies?
3. Should the influence be diffused?
Reading Three: Cultural studies, Multiculturalism and media culture
This study shows how the perceptions of culture and multiculturalism is impacted by the
media. The multimedia platforms form the build the sense of selfhood and the idea of the
social aspects (Kellner 1997, 6). Likewise the cultural studies have its impact on the ‘media
critique’ (Kellner 1997, 6)
The point of view of the author is designed around the development of the “relations of
power and domination are encoded”. The point of resistance and support are also done to
certain point by the media culture. The points of the author are quite agreeable as the cultural
studies and media cultures have influenced the multicultural approach of the society.
Questions for the class-
1. Do you think media has mixed effect on social aspects?
