I am writing this letter to you to request you to make a positive change in the campus
and build restrooms that are gender neutral for the betterment of the campus. Our college has
restrooms which are for only males and females and there are no other restrooms made for
other genders who do not fall under any category which is a huge concern and a big issue for
the college.
Gender discrimination is one of the biggest social issues which the world is facing
these days and is alarming as there are reports that various people have been ending their
lives or are leading miserable lives because of discrimination and bullying. It is highly
important to spread awareness and educate people about the different genders like
transgender, genderqueer, pangender and many more to mitigate this issue and encourage
people to create an inclusive society where everyone lives peacefully without being entitled
to any sort of hate. There are many schools and colleges who have been considering teaching
about different genders and reducing gender discrimination in the society. However teaching

and reading in textbooks is not enough, it is important for the society to try normalizing it
practically and there is no better place to start this other than schools and colleges where
students are considered to be the future of the countries and the world who are going to make
positive changes in the society.
Our college needs gender neutral restrooms so that students are aware of different
genders that exist in the college campus. There are many students who identify themselves as
different genders and there are no different restrooms made for them which makes them feel
isolated and not a part of the college campus. There are many students who feel that students
with different gender identity do not belong to the society because of the lack of
inclusiveness of them in society.
Other than that restrooms are considered to be basic necessities and it is unfair that
people identifying themselves as different genders do not think that can have accessibility
and have the basic right for a basic need or amenities. Thus, building one will help them get
their basic rights and also make people understand and be comfortable around people with
different gender identities labeling everyone as a human being which is necessary in the
society in recent times. This will highly help the campus in achieving and maintaining
inclusiveness in an ethical manner. For example, there are washrooms just for men and
women and the students who identify themselves with different genders like a transgender
often might have issues in choosing the restroom. There are students who are boys but
identify themselves as a girl and biologically they should go to the restroom for boys
however feels more comfortable in using the girl’s restrooms. This often becomes
humiliating for them which often results to bullying and makes them feel they are not
accepted in the society. There have been many transgenders who have shared their horrific
incidents that they have been bullied and even have faced violence for choosing the wrong

restroom. Making gender neutral restrooms in the college which help in mitigating insensitive
and horrible issues like this.
Gender discrimination and bullying in colleges not only happens with transgenders
and genderqueer people but also with females in the colleges. Both male and female
biologically function in different ways and many people are not aware of the issues faced by
each other and have various misconceptions. Menstruation is still a taboo and many students
do not understand the normal monthly cycle of females. Creating a gender neutral restroom in
the college will help the students in getting educated about the process and handle situations
like this in a mature manner and normalize this social taboo. For example, many a times a
female student might get their menstruation in the college and this might take her a longer
time in the restroom which will make students understand the situation and normalize it in the
society rather than students being insensitive and harsh towards each other.
Other than focusing on just social issues, building of gender neutral restrooms is
necessary and is beneficial as it helps in saving the time of the students. Woman especially
take a longer time in restrooms which results in having a long queue and creating gender
neutral restrooms can solve this issue. Friends irrespective of their gender can accompany
their friends to the restroom and help them in any kind of distress which will help students
bond with each other and also encourage in eradicating gender discrimination in colleges in a
positive way.
Another factor which will is less important than the above mentioned factors however
is important is that creating gender neutral restrooms will be beneficial for the college as it
will be more cost efficient as the college will have only big restrooms in every floor which
will be accessible and open to all. The college will have to purchase and also install very few
fixtures in comparison to different restrooms according to genders which will automatically

help in saving money. This will also help in saving the amount which is usually spent on
cleaning and the maintenance.
Gender neutral restrooms more than a need has become a necessity as the installation
of the basic amenities has many significance and power. It will not only help in curbing
gender discrimination in the society however will normalize and encourage people with
different genders and sexual orientation to use basic amenities in harmony and also educate
people about different genders which will help in abolishing the norm that has been existing
the society for years. This will not only help the college take a step towards incorporating
diversity and inclusiveness but will help the college in acquiring a positive reputation and
create a positive environment for all. Thus, I would be highly obliged if you consider looking
into this matter and take an initiative of installing gender neutral restrooms in the college.
