INTRODUCTION

lower class people were treated badly in the social context. The book was part of the genre

George Orwell is the pen name of Eric Arthur Blair was an English novelist, essayist and
journalist who was known for his social critique, opposite to totalitarianism and the vocal
support to the democratic socialism(Babb, 2017). He was born in the British India, with father as
a minor British official. He was determined to produce literary criticism and polemical
journalism. The road to Wigan is one of his non fictional work which depicts the experience of

the working class living in the north part of the England. The work of Orwell is influenced in
popular culture and political culture. He changed his name related to the shift happened in the
Orwell's lifestyle where he changed the pillar of the British imperial formation in to a literary and
political rebel. The author was brought up in the environment of impoverished snobbery. He was
distinguished from other boys in the school premises because of his poverty and intellectual
brilliance. Because of his outstanding performance he won scholarship into two of England's
leading schools. Orwell published his first writing in college and then followed the tradition and
went to Burma to serve the country. He recount these experiences in his novel Burmese days.
Orwell went to the east side of the London to have the experience to live in the cheap lodging
house with the labours and beggar. He even worked as a dishwasher in hotels and restaurants and
all these experiences gave him the material for down and out in Paris and London. This book was

Gollancz based in London, UK. The publishers asked Orwell to write another book which is
based on the unemployment and social conditions in the north of England which was very
economically depressed. Orwell lived in Wigan to research for the book and investigating on the
social conditions. This economically depressed place had a many number of working class
writers coming from north of England. This book is not a fiction but a polemic and historical
