1.0 Introduction
The primary purpose of the paper is to discuss geriatric nursing issue that is determined to be a
contemporary issue in healthcare settings. It will discuss the rights of the older adults along with
the solutions to deal with the contemporary issues.
2.0 Geriatric nursing issue
Geriatric nursing is a comprehensive source of management advice and clinical
information associated with care for older people. The ageing of the population creates major
healthcare and social challenge for nurses as it increases the rate of disability that leads to the
burden of chronic disabilities and conditions (McIntyre & McDonald, 2019). Due to such issues
the nurse face challenges in maintaining the health of patients (Journal of Gerontological
Nursing., 2019).
2.1 Rights of elderly person
The elderly patient possesses certain rights to nursing and medical care such as the tight
to participate in healthcare decision-making, the right to personal autonomy and the right to an
assessment (Gould, Dupuis-Blanchard & MacLennan, 2015). The nurses must follow these rights
to maintain therapeutic-relationship with the patient.
2.2 Solutions for dealing with such issues
There occurs several obstacles or problems for nurses while treating older adults.
However, it is the responsibility of the nurse to avoid all the negative beliefs and stereotypes to
provide quality care to older adults (Persoon, Bakker, van der Wal‐Huisman & Olde Rikkert,
2015). The nurse must create a care plan before treating an older patient.
