INTRODUCTION
Reflection plays an essential role in nursing sector because through it an individual can
practice and improve its personal as well as professional skills, capabilities and knowledge in
order to provide high quality care to their patients (Bassot, 2015). Through it a person also able
to get huge opportunities which help them in personal as well as professional growth in
impressive manner. The respective reflection report is based on case study of Kim who is a
registered Nurse and she graduated from University of Technology Sydney in year 2018. Report
will include SWOT analysis for knowing strength, weakness, opportunity and threat, through this
analysis of situation will be done. Along with this there will be also application of Gibbs
reflection model for understanding the situation of case and identifying contribution of skills for
building personal resilience and identifying self-care strategies.
MAIN BODY
Leadership practices which are conducted by health care manager have positive or
negative impact for an organization, patients and provider. But there are various factors which
impact positively such as knowing of factors which lend to nursing leadership, it is essential to
ensure upcoming supply of healthcare leaders who can influence result positively for health care
patients as well as provider (Pianpeng and Koraneekij, 2016). Along with this, age is another
factors which influence leadership skills because it will help nurses in understanding how to treat
particular age group patients in effective manner so that they can feel comfortable while sharing
issues or problems. I will try to deal with this situation in a very calm manner if I am NUM. It is
because this situation is critical as the service provider is mentally ill. So she needs mental
support and care so that her morale could be recovered and training will be provided to her to
make her mentally strong and capable enough to make use of different equipments effectively. I
will be the NUM, I will make use of different standards of practise. It includes critical thinking
skills and analysing nursing practises, engagement in therapeutic and professional relationships,

for nursing practise, providing employees with safe, appropriate and responsive quality of
nursing practise, motivation, and evaluation of outcomes to inform nursing practise so as to make
improvement in her performance (Bassot, 2015). So in order to understand the situation, I will

softly communicate with Kim so that she feels comfortable and tell everything to me, by this

registered nurse practice I will able to motive Kim. Her condition was not well and there were
certain reasons also due to this particular situation as such lack of time and the demands of
patient care. Due to this situation which was faced by new graduate nurse in performing her
given tasks and to be familiar with emergency trolley services as well that could impact upon her
morale and performance as well. So NUM should have both practical and theoretical knowledge
about different concepts and aspects of their services to perform better. The UK policies

There are several registered nurses standard which must be followed by new graduate so
that they can conduct their medical practices properly as well as it will also help in fulfilling

developing plan for nursing practise, will help nurses to make proper delivery of their services

which related to RN Practises as such as engaging in therapeutic and professional relationships,
evaluation of outcomes to inform nursing practise will help in the proper development of her
career growth and improvement in her knowledge and skills related to her work as well as help
her in getting familiar with emergence trolley services also (Potter, 2015). In the scope of
working of RN, it is included about the competence in the provision of patient centred care as
specified by the registering authority's license to practise, educational preparation and context of

is within their autonomous scope and activities required by client specified order from listed

patients are covered when RN goes out of working boundaries. This is not counted under ethical

For nursing manager sometime it is necessary to use model and theories so that they can
conduct effective analysis as well as evaluation of strategies to create personal and professional
resilience which help in conducting standard practices of nursing. In the case of Kim I will adopt
Gibbs reflective model because it will help me in understanding situation as well as deciding
appropriate RN practices. I felt very bad while looking onto the condition of Kim which was
good in providing services to patients but because of her low ability to use of technical and
equipments, this made her morale down impacting upon her performance, mental situation as
well. So this incident also impacted upon my own confidence level as well. But I made my mind
to make improvement in her condition because there are some people who needs some more
support and guidance so that improvement in their working could be made and Kim was one of
those. By providing her with training and development programs, it will be made possible to
improve her knowledge and skills related to the use of equipments (Rivers, Richardson and
Price, 2014). In addition to this, her performance will be evaluated before and after the programs
so that improvement occurred could be known in her performance and scope for further
improvements could also be known (Husebø, O'Regan and Nestel, 2015). Further, she will be
provided with motivation classes, will get support from colleagues and seniors as well and will
be provided with every thing that could help in improving her personal and professional
resilience. With the help of conducting Personality Online Test, it helped me in improving my
communication skills and communication strategies as I am able to inspire and motivate other
employees, for this also it is important to communicate with them orally or written and the
positive response from them says that my communication is good and effective and my words
are reaching in the same sense in which I want to deliver it to them. Gibbs reflective model is
developed by Professor Graham Gibbs in year 1988. This will include six stage i.e. description,

feeling, evaluation, analysis, conclusion and action plan which help a person in understanding
situation through reflective statement. Explanation of Gibbs reflection model in respect of Kim
and NUM case is given below:-
Gibbs Reflection Model

Description- At respective stage description of experience related to particular situation
or activity is given. At this there are several point which need to consider such as what
happened, when and where did situation occur, who was present at that time, what you
and other do at that time, what was the result of situation and many others (Bassot, 2016).
Being a NUM I go Kim case she was graduated from University of Technology Sydney
in year 2018. At starting she is going her best but due to some reason she feel stressed
and hopeless and at one day she was found on the floor during the busy morning shift.
Feelings- At this stage a person explore his or her feeling or thoughts which occur during
going through a particular situation. In this an individual try to answer several questions
related to what they feel during situation, what they feel before and after situation, what
other will feel about particular situation, what you think others will feel about the
situation. In case on NUM, I feel very bad that Kim is facing such situation which
hamper her career and future. Moreover, at that time Kim was very embarrass because all
colleagues and patients are shock and looking at her (Hatem, 2014). At the time of
dealing with Kim, there were several feelings and thoughts which strike to my mind as I
was also passing through the same stage to which Kim was passing as her condition made
it clear to me. Additionally, I was also little bit nervous because it was not the case of
treating a patient but it was to cure a colleague who is not mentally and emotionally well
and due to this, her working was also negatively impacted. But I need to be patient at that
time because I have to deal with this situation and make Kim well both physically and
mentally well that could help in improvement of her condition as well.
Evaluation- At respective phase a person has chance that they evaluate what worked in
particular situation and what didn't (Bulman, Lathlean and Gobbi, 2014). In this
evaluation an individual need to be honest as much as possible because it will help them
in gaining more effective reflective outcome. In this they try to answer questions like
what was good and what are bad related to experience, what can be went well and what
will not go so effective. In given case at first I was happy that Kim is doing good but at
the end I was not happy because she gets disturbed and feeling stressed. Due to which her
working quality also get impacted. According to me this situation may not arise if Kim
will interact with other properly and conduct their work effectively.

Analysis- At respective stage a person gets chance to analyse whole situation in order to
identify exact meaning of particular situation in effective manner. In this they will try to
answer why things are done well, why it is not and what sense a person can make through
situation (Hatem, 2014). In case of NUM, I was satisfied that Kim is going RN practices
in effective manner but at last she is not feeling happy and confident which impact on
their working. But through this situation according to me peoples can make sense that
feeling so much lonely, depressed and stressed make a person weak as well as they also
not able to perform her task. Communication is an important aspect at the time of RN
Practises or any other activities with the help of which improvement in her condition
could be made. With the help of proper communication, the mindset of an individual such
as Kim could be changed in positive way due to this reason effective communication is
an important skill which is needed at the time of providing health and social care services
to their patients or employees as well or at the time of dealing personally with other
person also. So for the improvement in the knowledge and moral of Kim and other
employees, they will be provided the continuous training as and when something new is
brought up. This step will help me with good results and better performance of Kim and
other employees as well (Bulman, Lathlean and Gobbi, 2014).
Conclusion- At this situation a person need to make conclusion of a particular situation
in order to identify their learning. In this situation I learn that a person should never feel
too much depressed and stress because it will impact them very badly. Along with this,
according to me a person should always be happy and share their thoughts and ideas with
others so that he/ she get effective suggestion of problem.
Action Plan- At respective stage a person will develop plan of action which they can
take when same situation will occur in future (Husebø, O'Regan and Nestel, 2015). If
same case like Kim will take place, I would like to counsel that person in order to
understand their issues and problems as well as I will also develop strategies or programs
at which all members will interact with each other so that they feel connected.
By conducting these practices, I will able to create proper personal resilience as well as I
also able to identify self-care strategies because through it I am able to analyse my strength and
weakness that I needed during facing particular situation. Along with this, it will help me in
analysing whole situation effectively so that I can develop strategies properly that leads to
identify exact meaning of particular situation in effective manner. In this they will try to

overcoming of issues. Along with this, Gibbs reflection model also help me in understanding as
well as evaluating Kim's situation in effective manner. By evaluating her situation I realise that at
first Kim is going her job or playing her role in effective manner but after sometime when she
not able to get familiar with the emergency trolley services. Along with this she also feel
embarrassed, under confident and so on which affecting her nursing task. Moreover this will also
help her in overcoming depressed or loneliness situation. In addition to this by understanding
Kim situation, strategy which I want to recommend for personal and professional resilience are
NUM need to build supportive relationship with Kim as well as other colleagues. Along with
this, I also suggest nursing staffs to think positively and always stay strong because through it an
individual can face each and every situation effectively.
There is various knowledge, evidence, communication and networks which I want to
advice to my new graduate nurses if I am NUM so that they can also become one of the best
leader. I want to suggest them to enhance their personal practice knowledge, theoretical
knowledge, ward culture knowledge, reflexive knowledge and so on because it will help them in
understand patients properly. Along with this evidence I want to advise them to enhance are
related to cohort studies, case series, case report, editorials etc. and for improving
communication and networking they must practice, attain conferences, conduct group analysis,
try to become influencer and many others. By this analysis I able to know that there is various
phase by which I go through and it will help me in enhancing by knowledge.
CONCLUSION
By analysing above point it can be summarised that in nursing profession it is necessary
for a person to have several skills and abilities so that they can treat patients in effective and
impressive manner. For evaluating strength and weakness, a person can conduct SWOT analysis
which help them in identifying capability through which they can conduct various tasks as well
as limitations that they need to overcome. Further, for effective leadership, it is important for the
leaders to provide their employees with proper support and guidance, have helping and calm
nature which have been provided by Kim's Manager. It is important for leaders to know about
their followers perception as well and then to influence them in the right way and sense. Proper
communication and guidance is must to create positive response and dedication for the work in
them. In this way, effective leadership could be used to create good environment and positive
work from the employees in an organisation (Bassot, 2016). Along with this an individual can
