Assessment 2: Applying GVV Framework to an Ethical Dilemma Scenario

GIVING VOICE TO VALUES

INTRODUCTION
 Through this task we aim to understand two
important matters associated with workplace
culture; those are, ‘ethical dilemma’ and
‘Giving Voice to Values’. In order to carry out
this task we have prepared a fictional case
scenario keeping the Telstra AU Company at
the centre of our discussion. We also have
prepared a role-play script which we will
enact as a group. In this presentation we are
going to provide some necessary information
regarding our assignment.

ETHICAL DILEMMA
 It can be described as a
situation that offers difficult
choices to an individual.
Such situations compel
people to make a choice
among two different views or
actions which are closely
associated with their moral
obligations. This matter is
also known as moral
dilemma (Wang & Calvano,
2015). Under such
circumstances people need
to follow ethical guidelines to
reach a desirable outcome.

GIVING VOICE TO VALUES
 GVV framework
promotes a value
driven approach for
business leadership.
This framework aims
to implement ethical
standards in business
operations and
teaches learners to
act religiously on their
values (Mintz, 2016).

CASE SCENARIO
 The case revolves around the Telstra Company.
It deals with a fund crises evoked by the
commission scheme associated with the third
generation TV project. The sales and product
managers tries to mitigate that crisis by
imposing extra charges on their internet
services. However James and Ms Jones strongly
oppose this plan.

ARGUMENT
 Imposing additional charges on internet services
would benefit the entire organisation and its staffs.
This is the only possible way for maintaining the
increased sales rate of the new product.
 It won’t harm the customers as the additional
charges are not very high.
 Slight modification of the billing system would hide
the discrepancy.

COUNTER-ARGUMENT
 It would definitely harm the
customers as they are
already paying enough to
make the internet service
project successful.
 Even if it doesn’t harm
them, it’s unethical as the
internet users would not
get benefitted in any way
through this new project.
 Manipulating the billing
system is completely
unethical.

ACTION
 Communicating the
problem with the
general manager with
courage. It is difficult as
the managers have the
power to make the
opponents lose their
jobs.

RESULT
 The joint manager
was impressed with
James and Evie’s
integrity.
 He took necessary
actions on the
matter.
 He didn’t reveal their
identity.

CONCLUSION
This assignment taught us
that we must follow our
ethical values and maintain
professional standards under
all circumstances. We must
learn to look beyond our
selfish agenda.
