Global Alliance for
Improved Nutrition
Ambika Thapa
Overview of Organisation
The organization is a private, not-for-profit agency which
deals with the area of improving nutrition in people
around the world.
They have global presence with headquarters in Geneva,
Switzerland. It has offices in USA, Europe, Indonesia,
India, Africa and Canada with projects all over the world.
The organization GAIN visualizes the countries to be free
of malnutrition. It organizes partnerships with public and
private companies to promote the well-being of the
population. This partnership helps in proper delivery of
nutritious goods to the large masses of population.
The primary focus of the organization is on the project,
“Improving children’s diet” in the continent of Africa. It
plans on reducing the rate of stunting that has been
observed in the children in Africa. A similar kind of
project is implemented in Haiti, Rwanda, Kazakhstan and
Mali. In addition to this, GAIN also provides support to
the working people with proper education on the
benefits of including a balance diet
In addition to this, there is another project titled,
“Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN)”, which determines the
importance of the investment done in nutrition by the
people in the developing countries (Lie, 2019).
Contribution to the Common Good
The organization has contributed in enhancing the diet of the
children in the world by doing a common good and placing
nutrition as a integral part of the global health.
Their program, Improving children’s diet, focuses on advocacy to
incorporate necessary nutrients in the diet of the children to
improve their overall nutrition ("Improving Children’s Diets -
Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition", 2019).
It provides education to the population on the importance of
micronutrients and balanced diet for a proper bone and brain
development. It also exercises enhanced efforts for advocacy of
these programs worldwide for raising substantial funds for the
project.
The institutional meals will provide the children with the
necessary nutritious food for a better muscle and nutrition
development.
GAIN puts effort in acknowledging the requirement of specific
nutrients that have been missing from the diets of the children.
This gap in nutrient delivery is met by creating a demand for
nutrient-dense foods and products by sustainable delivery
channels.
GAIN has recently been granted a US$20 million grant from the
Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to initiate a Nutrition Program
in the developing countries. It will address the problem of poor
nutrition to the people of the developing countries by making
them available to the global market of fortified foods.
Health care professionals, nurses, financial advisors and
advocates are recruited by the foundation to promote the well-
being of the population and gather funds for the programmes.
My Professional Contribution
As a nurse, I will be providing assistance to GAIN in
educating the children and their parents on the
importance of nutrition in physical development.
I can be a part of the community health centres that are
organised by GAIN to promote nutrition by creating
presentations. These presentations will help the people
grasp the information quicker and make them interested
in incorporating them in their daily lifestyles.
During the bachelor of nursing, I have been a part of
many philanthropic events and charities whose main
focus was to provide the people with the awareness of
many diseases.
Because of my experience in associating with a number
of charities, it is easier to contact them and arrange for
funds to organize events for GAIN.
Assessment of the current nutrition status of the family
will help in analysing the nutrition demands of the
individual and providing a nutritional health education
programme.
Creating awareness among the public by making them
understand the importance of the nutrition in proper
brain and body development of an individual.
