Title:
“ Should Global citizenship replace national identity?”
Why this topic?
Motive behind selecting this topic is to identify the impact of global citizenship that could
influence the national identity of an individual. There are several countries where people are
living with global citizenship with other nation identity so the main reason behind choosing this
topic is to explain that an individual can live all around the world with their global citizenship
and it will not have impact on their national identity.
Three key sources
Key source 1:
According to the views of Frida Garza, (2016), it has been analysed that people are
increasingly identified as global citizen more than national. After conducting survey, it has been
concluded that more than 20,000 people from 18 nations in between December 2015 and April
2016 are saying that they consider themselves more of a global citizen instead of a particular
country they are living in because it is believed that everyone have a right to take citizenship
of entire world and help in making it a better place (People are increasingly identifying more as
“global citizens” than national citizens, 2016). Thus, people see themselves as global citizen
first instead of national which result in replacing national citizenship over global.
Key Source 2:
As per the views of Yosola Olorunshola, (2016), it has been identified that global
citizenship is becoming more popular in emerging economies but national identity is important.
Now a days, people are choosing their identity as citizen of world on first and foremost basis.
But it is crucial to note that global citizenship cannot replace an individual identity of nation they
belong. Concept of global citizenship is becoming more popular in emerging economies – This
concept is becoming more people because everyone want to become citizen at global
level. In countries like United Kingdom, Germany, Russia and USA approx. 50% of
people are presently identified as world level citizen (BBC poll says 'global citizenship' is
on the rise, 2016).

Thesis statement:
The Thesis statement is as follows:-
“Global citizenship can also be about building a worldwide movement to tackle world's
biggest challenges but it has power to reduce the national identity of an individual”.

Main arguments
Positive arguments-
From 20,000 respondents of 18 countries, it has been asked that whether they consider
themselves as planet wide citizen or not. The response was “yes”. Main positive thing in
this is people are becoming global citizen they feel themselves part of all over the world
(People are increasingly identifying more as “global citizens” than national citizens,
2016). Apart from this, approx. 50% of the United Kingdom population define them as
global citizens. Survey conducting states that approx. 43% of the people give priority to their nationality
and they think that local ties, ethnicity, religion, gender are the factors which shape
individual identity along with the national boundaries (Rise in globalism doesn’t mean
the end for nationalists,2019). Thus, through such behaviour individual national identity
is not reducing by global citizenship.
Negative arguments-
Major negative point is that 52% of population ranked themselves as national citizen and
they think it is the best criteria for their self identity (Andreouli and Howarth, 2013).
Every individual want their own identity which will be gained only when they consider
their nationality as individuals own identity. But at some level it will give negative
impact on global citizenship because people are giving preferences to their national
identity first which is reducing worldwide citizenship.
People who are strongly identified as global citizens in the latest round of the World
Values Survey, 82% also strongly identified with their nation as well as 74 percent are
have proud on their nation (Rise in globalism doesn’t mean the end for
nationalists,2019).
Writing plan
In order to gather information for this topic, I have set some goals for specific time
period. These kind of approaches assist me in managing further task on proper time bound
duration. It was a challenging aspect for me because it requires proper consistency in effective
manner. The written plan of this report is -

Source evaluation – 4-5 days
