INTRODUCTION
Sustainable Tourism is referred to as a system wherein people visit to a destination as
tourists and try making a positive impact on its society, economy as well as the environment
globally (Amerta, Sara and Bagiada, 2018). The whole idea behind the concept is to minimize
the harmful impact that is caused on the environment and helping the local people by generating
employment opportunities. Organization chosen for this report is TUI Group, which is a global
sustainable tourism organization in the UK. The company was founded in the year 1965 and is
headquartered in London, United Kingdom. The report assesses the adverse impacts of travel and
tourism that have led to the need of sustainable development and also explains the evolution of
sustainable tourism. The role of stakeholders within the concept and the ways in which they
contribute to the global sustainable tourism is also explained.

P1 Assessment of the adverse impacts of travel and tourism that have driven the need for
sustainable tourism development
While travel and tourism contribute to the overall economy of a country, it also comes
along with its own share of adverse impacts that can harm the environment. When tourists visit a
particular destination, they tend to litter the place. This can cause harm to the environment as if a
greater number of people visit a place, the more it is likely to get polluted. The waste is majorly
plastic water bottles, plastic bags, containers etc. Not only this, but the flora as well as fauna of
the destination also gets exploited in order to entertain people. Although these activities may
seem like a lot of fun, but the reality is that the animal suffer a lot (10 Negative Effects of
Tourism You Should Know About, 2019). All these impacts have led to the creating the need for
sustainable tourism development. Organizations are becoming conscious about the environment
and the harm caused to it. As a result of this, they are adopting various strategies by which this
harm can be minimized.
P2 Discuss the development of sustainable tourism and how it has evolved
Sustainable Tourism has picked up pace over the last few years and all destinations
today, mostly urban are focusing on sustainability increasingly (Edgell Sr, 2019). This is because
urban tourism has increased and people from all around the world are visiting different locations.

Another reason why sustainable tourism has become important is because it is necessary to
address the various issues of climate change like global warming etc. that are a result of an
increase in the carbon emissions. Carbon emissions can be reduced through various ways like
adopting sustainable transportation, using renewable energy etc. Sustainable tourism can only be
successful when both people of a particular destination as well as tourists visiting a particular
place realize that exploiting the environment is not a good choice and therefore, contribute
equally to sustain it (Hall, 2019). Therefore, sustainable tourism has evolved gradually from
being a small segment in the travel and tourism industry to tourism organizations realizing that in
order to be successful, they should build a business that is sustainable. Sustainable tourism also
contributes in maintaining a high level of satisfaction among people who visit a particular
destination and ensure that they have a seamless experience.

P3 Principles that support the development process of a sustainable tourism strategy in order to
meet sustainable objectives along with specific examples
The various principles that underpin the development process of a sustainable tourism
strategy so as to attain the objectives are explained below with examples.
Utilizing resources efficiently – All the resources that are available should be utilized in
the most efficient manner so as to reduce the generation of waste which an impact the
environment is a negative manner. For example, TUI can do this by reducing the rate by which
different resources like fossil fuels and other non-renewable resources are consumed by the
people.
Supporting local economies – Tourism that keeps up a wide variety of activities within
the local economy of a destination helps or contributes towards not only protecting them but also
avoid any kind of damage done to the environment (Sustainable Tourism, 2020). For examples-
the tourists should choose local cafes and restaurant instead of going to national restaurant
chains.
Training staff – Training employees helps in integrating sustainable tourism as well as
developing strategies so that objectives can be met. Efficiently trained employees not only

generate awareness about sustainable tourism but also share their valuable inputs so that
effective strategies can be developed.

P4 Role of key stakeholders in the global sustainable tourism agenda and strategic development
process
There are various stakeholders in the global sustainable tourism like tourism
organizations, government departments, people who visit a particular destination/ tourist, local
councils etc. They play an important role in the strategic development process as well as in the
global sustainable tourism agenda, some of which are explained below –
Tourists – People can either visit a place because of business reasons or for leisure and
visit various tourist places (Park and Kim, 2016). When they do so, they spent money and
contribute towards the sustainable development of a particular location. Therefore, they can
support the different strategic decisions in an organization.
Local people – Local people play an important role in helping a company in the strategic
development process. They should adopt ways that are safe and do not cause any harm to the
environment. This will lead to the promotion of sustainable practices within the destination and
also the environment will be protected against any harm.
Local governments – The local government of a destination also contribute towards the
strategic development process. This is because they can understand the characteristics of a
destination in a better way and can create strategies so that the tourists get a seamless experience.
P5 Evaluate the ways in which key stakeholders contribute to the global sustainable tourism
agenda and strategic development
As discussed above, different key stakeholders such as tourists, local councils, local
government and people contribute to the global sustainable tourism agenda as well as strategic
development. When tourists visit a particular place, they spend money which helps in generating
new employment opportunities for the local residents of a location (Spenceley and Meyer, 2017).
Also, the money spend by them can be used to reduce poverty in a number of ways because the
number of opportunities available in the economy increase. On the other hand, the local people
also are benefited from the sustainable tourism because there is development of infrastructure,

generation of jobs etc. They also contribute to the same as they protect their environment from
any kind of damage and harm. This is because tourists visit a particular place and leave but the
local residents stay there. Local governments also, know the importance of protecting an eco-
system and thus develop plans and strategies so as to safeguard the same but also provide a
memorable experience to the visitors so that they consider visiting the place again (Kapera,
2018). Therefore, different stakeholders contribute to the global sustainable tourism agenda and
strategic development in different ways.

CONCLUSION
From the above report, it can be concluded that although tourism contributes to the
overall development of an economy, it can still have adverse impacts on it. With the amount of
harm being caused to the environment and different destinations in particular increasing day by
day, sustainable development has gained popularity. It helps in reducing the waste generated as
well as protecting the environment to the same time. It also contributes to the economy of a
nation by generating employment for the local residents.
