INTRODUCTION
Travel and tourism industry is consist of different types of business to achieve a
particular goal and objective. One of the important objective of travel and tourism industry is to
develop and offer different types of products and services for satisfying the need and demand of
visitors. Travel and tourism industry is divided in different parts. It includes operations of
lodging that includes the services provided by hotels, casinos, resorts etc. The industry also
includes transportation services like ships, auto etc. Food and beverage is also a major area of
travel and tourism industry that includes restaurants, cruise ships etc. At last, retail shops like
handicraft shops and activities such as amusement parks, entertainment etc. is an important part
of travel and tourism industry. The Report will outline the statistics, nature and trends of global
tourism. The Report will also provide information of tourist generating areas as well as tourist
receiving areas. The Report will also describe the factors that are contributing to the growth of
global tourism, challenges in future development of global tourism etc.

Statistics of global tourism.
Due to globalization, the importance of travel and tourism industry has been increased.
Global tourism refers to offering the facilities and services of travel and tourism in different
countries by crossing the borders of the nation. Tourists refers to the persons that are staying in
different places for getting leisure or other facilities(Wu, 2016).
One of the largest industry of the world is Travel and tourism industry. The industry is a major
contributor in the economic development at global level. In year 2016, the total economic
contribution of travel and tourism industry is more than 7.6 trillion in terms of US dollars. The
industry has directly contributed in the economic development it includes entertainment,
transportation, various attractions etc. There are many countries like United States that are
having popular destinations for tourists. The total number of tourists arrived in year 2016
globally is more than 1.20 billion and this is expected to be increased up to 1.8 billion till year
2030(Mowforth, 2015).
In 2016, the revenue generated by travel and tourism globally is more than 1.8 billion. In year
2016, the total contribution of travel and tourism industry in respect of revenue is more than
approximately 1.27 trillion in terms of US dollars. One of the top city that is spending huge
amount on tourists is Dubai. In year 2016, Dubai has spent approximately 31.3 billion in terms

of US dollars. In year 2017, it is expected that more than 1.32 billion visitors will arrive
globally(Sardak, 2016). In year 2017, in North America more than 134.8 million tourists has
arrived. And in middle east more than 58.1 million tourists has arrived.
There are various top destinations in the world. One of the top destination of Mexico city is The
Zocalo. New York city also have various tourists destinations that includes Central Park. Tokiyo
also have various top destinations for tourists such as Sensoji temple, Meiji Jingu Shrine, Disney
land in Tokyo. China also have top tourists destinations such as Great wall of china. Australia
also have top destinations for tourists such as Sydney Opera House. In Hong Kong Ocean Park is
one of the top tourist destination. The top tourist destinations in UK are Buckingham Palace,
green park etc.
Trends in global travel and tourism industry are as follows-
Global tourism industry is playing an important role in economic activities, providing job
opportunities to the unemployed peoples in the world, and it is one of the major contributor of
revenue from exports and contributes to gross domestic product.
The number of arrival of inbound tourists in year 2016 is more than 1.2 billion.
Characteristics of tourism generating and receiving areas of world.
Tourist generating areas- Tourist generating areas refers to the regions from where the tourists
visit to the tourist destinations in other countries.
France-
The number of peoples of France that are visiting tourist destinations in other countries like UK.
France is one of the top tourist generating region which is helping tour operators to increase their
revenue. The revenue of tourism sector of France in terms of outbound tourism has been increase
by 4.1 %(Richards, 2016.). Some top long haul destinations for France tourists are Mauritius,
Thailand etc. Some top medium haul destinations are Morocco, Spain etc.
Some of the demographic, economic factors that are affecting outbound tourism in France-
Family members in France are spending huge amount of money on tour and travels due to low
rate of inflation, improvement in confidence of customers etc. Due to fast development in
nuclear families the demand for hotels, catering has also increased.

United States of America is also one of the major tourist generating area in the world. In year
2017, approximately 87.7 million peoples has been visited at tourist destinations in various
countries. According to a survey, tourist from USA has visited to Canada, Mexico etc.
Tourist visiting areas- Tourist visiting areas refers to the countries in which tourist are visiting
from various countries like France, USA etc. Some of the top tourist visiting regions are-
Spain- Spain is one of the top tourist destination that has contributed approx. 11% of the GDP of
Spain. Many tourists are visited Spain from France, Germany etc. The tourism industry of Spain
is highly affected by rate of unemployment in the country then also it is one of the top tourist
destination due to the geographical location, climate etc.
-China- China is a tourist destination for tourist from different countries. It is forecasted that,
China will be at 1st position in terms of number of tourist till year 2020. In China, the literacy
rate of people in the country is much high as compared to other countries that has contributed in
growth of tourism industry in China(Pratt, S. and Liu, 2016). At various tourist destinations in
China, management system has been set up and the development of economy is playing an
important role in tourism industry development.
Reason for growth of tourism generating and receiving areas of world.
There are various reasons behind the growth of tourism generating and receiving areas of the
world-
France- France is famous for various tourist destinations such as Eiffel tower, Louvre Museum
etc.
Eiffel Tower – Eiffel Tower is a symbol of Paris. The major attraction of the tower is the height
of Eiffel tower. It is one of the famous symbol of Paris symbol. There are various ancillary
facilities such as ticket office between the pillars, and amenities like cafeteria are available .
Tourist can access the tower through elevator ride.
USA-
Yellow Stone National Park- The park is famous for natural attractions, and wildlife. Many
tourists are visiting the park in winter season due to its attractions of sports in winter. It is
famous due to its beauty. Visitors can access the park from Jackson on Highway through car.
Various amenities like gift shops like American housewares etc. are located inside the park.

Retiro Park- The Retiro Park in Madrid, Spain is an attraction for tourists due to the beautiful
monuments, sculptures, beautiful lake, and it host different types of events for the tourists that
are visiting the park. At the entrance of the park there is a beautiful pond. There are few
buildings that represents the paintings, museum collections etc. Major attraction in the park is
The Crystal Palace. Amenities available inside the park are exercising area available for old and
young people. Park also conducts book fair annually.
China- There are various tourists attractions in China such as monuments, parks, buildings,
resorts etc. Famous tourist destinations in China are Huangguoshu Waterfall, Three Gorges,
Shaolin Temple etc. One of the top tourist attraction is Great Wall of China(Gmelch, S.B. and
Kaul, 2018).
Great Wall of China- Greta wall of china has received top rating from China National Tourism
Administration. There are various attractions for tourists near Great Wall of China such as
Yanmen Pass, Baishi Mountain etc. Various amenities are available such as hotels, restaurants
etc. near Great Wall of China. Great Wall of China is an icon of national pride, creativity, culture
etc. Every year large number of tourist visit Great Wall. There are various purposes of the wall
such as it plays an important role in performing trade of goods, it is an important corridor for
transportation activities of Chinese peoples. It also helps to control the level of emigration and
immigration in China.
Stages of destination life cycle, strategies.
TALC Model-
According to Butler, there are six stages in the development of tourism. The model
provides a better opportunity for performing fieldwork. This model says that initially, less
number of tourist visit a destination due to lack of facilities and knowledge. As the destination
becomes popular, more and more tourist visits that place and the stage at which the destination
reaches its capacity, the number of tourists declines.

tourism organisation such as; UNWTO, PATA, EU, UN, IATA, etc. The industries are beneficial

UNWTO: This stands for the United Nations world tourism organisation. It is
responsible for promotion of universally accessible tourism. This organisation promotes tourism
and enable the economic growth, environmental sustainability and supports to the tourism
policies across the world (UNWTO, Who we are, 2019). The aim of the policies of the
organisation is to encourages regions and government to implement Global code of ethics for
tourism with the aim to maximise socio-economic contribution of tourism and minimising any
negative impacts. The role of UNWTO is to generate knowledge regarding market, promote
sustainable and competitive tourism policies, enhance tourism education and training.
PATA: It stands for Pacific Asia Travel Association. PATA is a membership association
that aim to promote development of travel and tourism in the Asia Pacific region. PATA is a
non-profit organisation. The policies of the association have partnership with private and public
sector members and provides leadership and counsel to the member organisation. PATA
comprise 85 government, 25 international airports and airlines, 72 educational institutions, 107
hospitality organisation and a large number of travel and tourism companies in Asia Pacific.
The Strategic Intelligence Centre of PATA offers matchless data and insight in the region
of Asia with inbound and outbound statistics as well as in depth reports on the tourism markets.
The event develop by PATA create million of new businesses every year for their members. The
aim of the policies is to;

Tourism provider: Tourism provider are the organisation that are committed to improve
the value, quality and effectiveness of travel and tourism market information.
Travel agencies: Travel agencies are service industry. The management and service
provider known as travel agent who is responsible for help people to plan, select and
arrange their vacations. The travel agencies plays a vital role in promoting the tourism by
providing quality holiday services to their consumers.
Tour operators: Tour operators devise, arrange and promote vacations and travel
options. Tour operators are responsible for put the international tour ingredients together,
promoting the tourism (Salvioni, 2016). There are four types of tour operators; inbound,
outbound, domestic, ground. Tour operators makes packages and market at international

These are image builders of any tourism place and destination. Multinational travellers mostly
depend on the travel agencies. They promote destination by suggesting people to visit their and

global travel and tourism industry. Example- if the disposable income of the population
increases, then tourists will spent more on availing the facilities that are provided by travel and
tourism industry. Increase in disposable income of tourists will provide an opportunity of growth
and development of tourist destinations in different countries(Bourdeau, Gravari-Barbas, M. and
Robinson, 2016). The expenditure by tourists in tourism sector depends upon rise in the level of
income, rate of taxation in the country. Some other major economic factors that may impact the
future development of tourist industry are taxation policy of the Government such as rate of tax
in the country, level of price of the services provided by hotels, restaurants etc.

Political- There are different types of political factors that may impact the development in global
travel and tourism industry. Political factors includes policy of the Government of the country in
respect of tariffs on different types of services and facilities that are provided by tourist
destinations that involves parks, hotels, restaurants etc. Instability in political environment is also
negatively impact the global tourism industry. Sometimes, Government bans entry in tourist
destinations due to some political reasons. Example- In Philippines, the instability in government
has impose a threat to the tourist destination.
Social- There are different types of social factors that may impact the development in global
travel and tourism industry. Demographic factors will affect the future growth and development
of travel and tourism industry. Location of the family also impact the tourism industry. The
possibility of travelling for old peoples is short distance as compared to young generation. Due to
changing requirements, demand of the tourists, tourism industry will have to make efforts for
satisfying the demands of tourists.
Technological- There are different types of technological factors that may impact the
development in global travel and tourism industry. Improvement in the technology for offering
services to the tourists will help in growth and success of travel and tourism industry in future.
Advancement in technology will help to improve the sales and the ability of generating revenue.
Improvement in technology has made travelling through air very easy. It also helps to improve
the communication process and security for tourists. For future development of tourism industry,
tourism centres will have to employ trained employees who are having necessary skills of using
advanced tools and technology.
Environmental factors- There are different types of technological factors that may impact the
development in global travel and tourism industry. All the travel agencies as well as tourists
should take major steps for creating sustainable tourism. So that, generation of future can enjoy
the benefits of different tourist destinations in future(Giaoutzi, 2017). If, tourism industry does
not consider the impact of travel and tourism activities on environment then, in that case tourist
will not visit the destinations and it will result in decrease in the overall competitiveness. If, there
is a lack of proper management of waste disposal at tourist destinations then in that case, it will
negatively affect the attraction of tourist destinations.
