in 16country markets. As we know globalisation has been a boon for a business, so by providing
employment opportunities at Holland &Barrett. They tried to reduce the international poverty
problem, and by setting up offices in different countries they have to pay less tax rates which
helped them in attaining business success.

Chapter 2: Literature Review
The concept of Globalisation.
According to Beverly bird and Carol Kopp,2019, Globalisation is the spread of
technology, information, products and jobs across the national boundaries and integration and
interaction between the worlds cultures, government and economies. The term globalisation is
derived from the word “globalise” which means to spread or operate internationally. It is the
spread of business organisation from domestic level to an international level. Primarily,
globalisation was focussed on the economic side of the world such as trade, international capital
flows and foreign direct investments but now the term has been enlarged to include a broader
range of areas and activities such as socio-cultural, political, technology, media, culture and
biological factors. Recently, it has grown-up due to the advancement in technology and
transportation. Many things have been globalised as people cone into contact. With the increased
globalisation the growth of international trade, culture and ideas automatically grows. It is
particularly used in financial market and commodity market and provides access to larger market
which means that the firm may experience higher demand for their products. Basically, it is the
process of making the worlds economy more connected and interdependent (Corstjens and Lal,
2012). It has provided varied options for people so that people can make better choices to satisfy
their needs. Globalisation has helped to provide large number of employment opportunities, and
lead to improvised standard of living, better purchasing power and surge in compensation.
Globalization encourages free and fair competition at international level due to which
organisation supply goods at a lower price. People may or may not like globalisation because
they feel it only helps rich people get richer by making poor people poorer.
The benefits of globalisation over the business operations of Holland & Barrett.
According to Tejvan Pettinger (2017), globalisation at Holland & Barrett has helped in
targeting new customers from totally a new environment which helped them to build their brand
image and grow their business. As Holland & Barrett. international is one of the worlds leading
wellness and health retailers, so rapid international expansion over there has been driven by a
combination of franchising and acquisition. By providing highest quality of products, best value
nutritional supplements and wellness products they were majorly focussing on attaining
customer satisfaction. Introduction of new technologies made it easier for Holland &Barrett. to
communicate and share information throughout world, which reflected in increased operational

efficiency and productive employee performance. It increased mobility of labour working there
i.e.,employees can move more willingly to a different country if they are paying well. As
globalisation motives are idealistic, as well as opportunistic, the development of global market
has benefited Holland & Barrett to sustain in the competitive global market (Crane and Matten,
2016). There has been rapid growth in use of transportation so that global travel could be easier
for the movement of goods and people across the globe. To enhance their global access they
went online , going online they were generating more customers rapidly. They are attaining
competitive advantage on multiple fronts through globalisation by reducing the operating costs
on goods manufactured abroad.
The role of globalsiation in the context of business sucess.
According to Anthony Birch, 2018, Globalisatin is defined as the interconnected web of
political, social, economical, technological and cultural processes. It is the integration of global
economies through investment and trade flow, as well as the production of goods and services in
order to enhance international competitiveness. By examining the flow of people, ideas, goods
and capital a more complete analysis can be made. Globalisation has played a huge role in
business success, as it has reduced international poverty problem by providing employment
opportunities to many individuals and helped in growing goodwill of business so that more and
more individuals are aware of their brand. As we know, globalisatioin has been a boon to
business so it focussed on improving the access of goods and services. It builds stronger trade
ties and dependencies between the firms of different nations (Grayson and Hodges, 2017).
Globalisation has enabled increased level of investments. It has made it easier for countries to
attract long-term and short-term investments by improving the economies of developing
countries . By setting up their offices in diffeerent countries with very low tax rates and they
funnel their profits through these subsidiaries, that means they pay very less tax in the countries
where they do most of their business will help in attaining business success.
The ways through which Holland & Barrett can attain higher competitive advantage within
the commercial centre.
According to Jacquelyn White,2019, Competitive advantage is a set of qualities which
gives an advantage to business over its competitors in the market or it can be known as
superiority that a firm has over its competitors, which can be earned only by offering better
services to customers. It generates greater value for a firm and its share holders because of

certain strengths and conditions. The more sustainable the competitive advantage, the more
difficult it is for competitors to neutralize the advantage.
Holland &Barrett. is achieving its competitive advantage by using cost leadership
strategy through which they can reduce the cost of high-quality products by selling them at
reasonable prices which will give them above average profits in order to achieve higher sales. As
business technology changes often, sometimes the other company may not be aware of some
new technologies, so by using technology based strategy(i.e.,computer and applications) they can
improve their operational efficiency of their services (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson, 2012).
Differentiation is the next strategy which have been used by them to stand up unique in the
market (Zhao, 2012). By lowering costs is the only factor that may set aside a business. Business
that differentiate themselves typically looks for some marketable attributes that they have, which
can set them apart from their competitors. So, by providing the best nutritional supplements and
wellness products to enhance the well being of customers Holland & Barrett. Is differentiating
themselves. Business that differentiate themselves typically look for one or more market
attributes.

Chapter 3: Research Methodology
Research may be broadly defined as systematic gathering of data or a systematised effort
to gain new knowledge for the purpose of making decisions. It is a systematised process in
which various prospects are involved to assist whole investigation in right direction.
Methodologies are mainly used to investigate a research problem and to take appropriate
decision to overcome with the research problem. Research methodology has many dimensions
and research methods do constitute a part of the research methodology (Javadian and Singh,
2012). It deals with the cognitive process imposed on research by the problems arising from the
nature of its subject matter. This section involves various aspects that plays significant role in
providing appropriate solution to a problem.
Types of Investigation
The primary consideration of a researcher is to select the best suitable investigation in
order to assist the overall investigation activities in the right direction. Research constitutes two
types, they are qualitative research and quantitative research. They will be selected on the basis
of data collected by the researcher. Qualitative Research is an exploratory research, which is
used to gain an understanding based on non-numerical data on the contrary Quantitative research
is used to quantify the problem by way of generating numerical data with the help of statistical,
computational or mathematical technique (Lee, Shin and Park, 2012). In the present study
qualitative research methodology has been used by the researcher so that understanding could be
gained for creating an appropriate framework to analyse the research issue in an appropriate
manner.
Research Approach
This is an important part of research methodology as it will help to carry out out the
research investigation work in an effective and efficient manner, in order to attain authentic
results. Research approach can be sub-divided into two parts i.e., deductive and inductive
research approach. Deductive research approach is used to test the validity of assumptions
whereas Inductive research approach contributes to the emergence of new theories and
generalisation (Mahmood and Hanafi, 2013). In this particular research study, inductive research
approach has been taken into consideration by the researcher as it is effective in conducting
appropriate qualitative research with the help of proper facts and figures.

Research Philosophy
A research philosophy is considered as a belief about the manner in which data about a
particular phenomenon should be collected, analysed and used. It deals with the nature, source
and development of knowledge. It is categorised into two major types, which includes
interpretivism and positivism research philosophy. Interpretivism philosophy, focusses on
interpreting elements of the study and employ multiple methods in order to reflect different
aspects of issue, on the contrary, Positivism philosophy is based on natural phenomena and their
properties and relations. In this research study, interpretivism philosophy have been used, thus it
is effective in providing a qualitative report. It is a most suitable tool for qualitative research as
in this study data has been gathered by analysing the perspective of various authors (Mathews
and Yang, 2012).
Data collection tools
This is the most essential aspect of the research methodology as it plays a very crucial
role in the statistical analysis. Data collection refers to the process of gathering and measuring
information of variables for the completion of research work in an appropriate manner. Data
collection can be done by using different methods, they are primary tools and secondary tools of
data collection. Primary data is that data which is collected for the first time by the researcher
himself with an aim for getting solution to a problem whereas, secondary data is the data which
is already collected. It is just the analysis and interpretation of primary data. In this research
study both primary and secondary sources of data collection has been used (Mura, 2012). Under
primary sources, the data was collected through surveys under which questionnaires are
prepared, that covers the aim and objective of the research which will be filled by the
respondents. Under secondary sources, the data was collected through books, journals, published
articles, newspapers, etc.
Data sampling tools
Data sampling is one of the most important factors which determines the accuracy of
research result. It is a set of data collected from a statistical population by a defined procedure.
Sampling can be categorised as Probabilistic and Non-Probabilistic sampling technique. Under
probabilistic sampling technique, each sampling unit has a known probability of its selection, it
is also known as random sampling . Under Non-Probabilistic sampling technique, probability of
selection is not known. In the present research study, Random sampling technique has been used

by the researcher to generate reliable information (Savrul, Incekara and Sener, 2014). In this
study sample size taken was 30 respondents by the researcher, and employees were the major
respondents of this research.
