"A critical analysis regarding the impact of globalisation on leadership within an
organisation. A study on Microsoft.
A) Introduction
This proposal is based on the impact of globalisation on leadership in an organisation.
Globalisation refers to the effective connection of various parts of the globe resulting in the
development of international economic, culture and political activities. In simple word,
globalisation is the integration as well as movement of people and goods among various
countries. Leadership introduces as an action of leading and guiding an individual or group of
people towards achievement of long term goals of an organisation. Within an organisation,
leadership plays an important role by motivating large number of employees to work towards
maximisation of effectiveness and efficiency of business operations (Amah, Amah and Barlow,
2019). Globalization has affected leadership via market and customer base, competition,
international employee transfer rates and an increase in opportunities.
For this proposal Microsoft is a given multinational technology company. It was founded by
the Bill Gates, Paul Allen in year 1975 and headquartered in Redmind, Washington. Company
specialise in developing, manufacturing and selling of consumer electronics, personal computer,
computer software and related services. Company has strong leadership that has positive impact
over their growth and success at domestic as well as global level. Company decide to expand
their business at global level, it is an opportunity for business in development of its leadership
aspects.
There are different points that will be included for completing business and management
project in systematic manner. This includes research aim, objectives and questions, significance
of the study, review of literature, research methodology and many others. These are important
points in completion of research proposal in systematic and effective manner.

Theme 1: The role of globalisation in context of an organisation.
As per the view presented by Bird and Kopp (2019), globalisation is the spread or extends
of technology, information, jobs and products across national cultures and borders. In economic
terms, globalisation explains an interdependence of nations in all over the world fostered
throughout free trade. Globalisation plays an important role in an organisation such as increasing
capital flows, greater free trade, greater movement of labour, development of business growth
and success, increased integration of global trade cycle, improved transport, increased
communication and effectively reducing barriers between countries. These are main roles played
by globalisation within an organisation. On the other hand, if an organisation expands their
business at global level, they can get number of benefits including increased global investment,
free movement of labour, lower prices/greater choice and may reduce global inequality.
Globalisation leads to maximised competitions that can be related to service and product price
and cost, technological adaptation, target market, quick production and quick response by
business. For example: when an organisation produces with fewer costs and sells cheaper, it is
capable to enhance its market share and profitability. Therefore, globalisation has effective role
in development of business growth and success at international level. Thus, process of
globalisation has enabled organisations to specialize and to raise the intensity of research &
development, innovation and investment in their output.
Theme 2: The impact of globalisation on leadership of Microsoft
According to the Pettinger, (2017), Globalisation within an organisation is refer as
business operations within large number of nations beyond to the domestic boundary of own
country. The scope of globalisation concept is wide and has both kind of impact over different
organisational capabilities. This not only has the impact over main operations but influences the
internal abilities too. In this direction leadership is also the one aspect which is affected with the
factor of globalisation. This is happening because each different nation has its own separate
value, norms and belief that create the ideologies individuals living there. Microsoft is the large
organisation and having global operations. The current condition of an organisation is big and
influence in market. Afterwards, globalisation has both kind of impacts i.e. positive and negative.
The developed nations where have values resemble from domestic one, leadership aspect has
positive influence. This allows better direction and creation of great leaders that work for success
of an organisation and vice versa. The one more aspect that impacts the leadership is culture.
5

This is also the part of globalisation. Different nations are culturally diversified and impacts the
point of leadership in same manner as presented in respect to globalisation.
Theme 3: Challenges that were faced by Microsoft in leadership aspect due to the process of
globalisation.
As per the view presented by Amah, Amah and Barlow, (2019), there are many number of
challenges were faced by Microsoft in point of leadership while globalise the business
operations. These challenges impact the ability of leader to influence the behaviour of
personnel’s and provide proper direction towards the accomplishment of individual and
organisational targets. All these challenges are mentioned below:
Cultural difference: The difference in culture is the main factor that impacts the aspect of
leadership. Each different nation has own culture, values, norms and belief. This impacts the
existing leader ability to persuade the employee’s behaviour in new nation with application of
common principles.
Language difference: The difference in language is also the main factor that impacts the
aspect of leadership. The point of communication is important to deliver the message or direction
the person towards completion of project. If direct communication is not possible then
employees of an organisation are not able to connect with the leader and understand the
requirements of an organisation.
Legal requirements: In successful performance of leadership by a leader, motivation of
employees is most important. This is the primary factor that persuades the behaviour to work
according to the organisational needs. There are many legal laws where importance to provide all
basic necessary facilities from safety to health. This hinders the initial capacity of motivation at
ground level.
Theme 4: The ways through which challenges related to globalisation impact over leadership can
be resolved
According to the Anand, Vidyarthi and Rolnicki, (2018), the ways that will help to
overcome from the numerous challenges of globalisation over leadership is presented below:
Hiring of local leader: This is the best way to overcome from the impact of
globalisation. This is about hiring of local person as leader who is capable of performing all
functions according to the conditions present in such particular nation.
6

Higher level motivations: Organisation like Microsoft is needed to focus over high level
of motivational factors. This will not only help the leader to persuade but also aid in hiring of the
talented candidates who are able to perform in all type of conditions according to the need of an
organisation.

C) Justification and contextualization
Why is the research important?
Research is important for each and every organisation because it support them in collection
of information about the market conditions, customer taste, market trends etc. By identifying
these aspects an organisation can easily expand their business and achieve better results within a
lesser time period. Research is important at personal as well as cadmic level. At personal level,
research helps an individual by increasing its literature review skill, data collection skill, data
analysis skill, time management skill etc. This will further support them by improving their
understanding regarding the specific area of study (Andriani, Kesumawati and Kristiawan,
2018). This research is based on the impact of globalisation on leadership in an organisation.
This is a broad topic that helps at academic level by boosting student’s knowledge about the role
of globalisation in leadership of an organisation.
Why is it important to find what you are trying to find?
It is important to the researcher to find out importance of globalisation in leadership of an
organisation. Within an investigation, researcher tries to find out different aspects such as role of
globalisation in context of business, impact of globalisation over leadership, challenges of
globalisation and ways for overcoming that challenges. These are main reasons for conducting
this proposal. Along with this, by doing this research, investigator can easily analysis the
opportunities and challenges present at globalisation for the leadership. Therefore, research is
important for Microsoft to analysis the positive and negative impact of leadership in their
leadership (Cecora, 2019).
How will it build in the existing body of evidence?
By using number of primary and secondary sources researcher can easily collect
information about the existing body. There are number of evidence that support researcher in
building an effective research. These sources are books, journals, magazines, questionnaire etc.
All these are effective sources that will support researcher to complete each tasks of the proposal
in systematic manner. From taking the research or surveys, the company Microsoft will have the
evidence about the effectiveness of previous establish polices and structure or culture into the
organization. From taking the question they can evaluate the effectively of those policies which
might brought some positive change into the organization. Researcher will help the company in
8

building the more evidence and that too strong one in accessing the impact of globalisation on
leadership within an organisation (Parent, Naraine and Hoye, 2018).
Is it timely? Does it respond to an existing need? What makes it so?
Yes, it is time based research that helps researcher in completion of each activities of study
within an allotted time period. Time is important part of research proposal because it helps
researcher to complete full proposal within set time duration (Anand, Vidyarthi and Rolnicki,
2018). For this, Gantt chart will be used by researcher because it facilitate in providing
information about the accurate time of research completion. This chart includes different
activities that helps researcher in making of starting and ending time of each activities. As it
makes easier for the researcher and also help them to complete proposal within time and in
systematic manner.

D) Methodology
Research methodology is the most critical aspect of study that will help a researcher when
gathering reliable and appropriate data on relationship in between brand identity and customer
retention (Amjad and et. al., 2018). Research methodology acknowledges an essential process of
collecting, analyzing and assessing knowledge that allows the investigator at the end of the
research to draw a clear conclusion. One of the key objectives of the research methodology
undertaken is to make clear and accurate conclusion which also helps to make whole research
more efficient and successful.
Research paradigm- This is an approach to conducting an investigation that has been
verified through an investigation. It is regarded as how the researcher can gather, interpret and
use reliable knowledge about the subject or idea. There are interpretivisim and positivism to
different research paradigm. In present investigation, positivism paradigm will be used because it
helps in exploring the idea that can help in gain the better understanding about perception of
researchers (Aoyama, Hoshika and Honda, 2018).
Research Approach- It is essential in research as it provides an efficient way of
collecting and analyzing data. This presents as a useful way to complete reliable and step-by-step
analyzes of the subject. Through this investigator, an effective research is being established
which helps to improve the possibilities of achieving positive results. There are two different
types of research approaches for an instance inductive and deductive. In conducting this
research, there will be deductive approach used because this provides the necessary and authentic
articles or information regarding specific subject area (Gaur and Kumar, 2018).
Research methods- This is explained as the processes, techniques and strategies which
mainly use in data collection in context to uncover information for better understanding about
topic. There are two different research methods such as quantitative and qualitative. In
conducting the present research, there will be quantitative method used because this allows
reaching at the high sample size and possible to give the positive outcomes (Gjesfjeld and et. al.,
2020).
Data collection techniques- Data collection refers to process about collecting
information on the interest variables that help in give the answers of stated research questions.
Two valuable techniques of data collection are introduced as primary and secondary to be used
for this project. Questionnaire will be used for gathering the primary information. While this
11

primary research instrument can help a researcher in gathering accurate data on impact of
globalisation on leadership of an organisation. In addition, to collect secondary information,
there will be books, journals, websites and many other sources used. The information has already
been mentioned to collect the secondary information in a better manner (Güven, 2018).
Sample size- It refers to the effective strategies used through researchers to choose
sample sizes from a large number of the populations in order to obtain valid data and
information. It introduces as most necessary part for selecting the sample size from whole
population. Probabilistic and non- probabilistic are two different sampling methods. There will
be probabilistic sampling used and chosen 60 sample size because this method is not biased and
gives equal chance to the chosen respondents without any biasness (Kelly and et. al., 2018).
Data analysis- This is explained as procedure of inspecting, transforming and also
modelling data with aim of searching the useful information, support the decision making and
informing conclusion. Through the use of the Thematic Data Analysis Tool, quantitative analysis
can be done and the investigator will have detailed knowledge about the research subject.
Through formulating different themes related to the subject of study, the investigator was able to
better interpret the data appropriately. This can also be used by other scholars and by investigator
in completing research in significant manner (Page and et. al., 2019).
Access and ethics- Access refers to the people who can access to the information of the
research and so the company. The Microsoft will provide the access only to the concerned party
such as employees, managers, leaders and top level of management. Otherwise no people would
be allowed to get the access for the information and data. The data collected by the company is
totally confidential. In fact, the opinions and the research answers are only accessible to few
people only who are conducting or indulge into the task of research. Random employees will not
get any kind of access as they would come to know about the opinions and the research answer
of other employees. This activity might create problem into the organization (Schoonderbeek,
2018).
Ethics refers to the norms and value in which the researcher is required to undertake the
research. The research should be conducted in an ethical way and should be confidential from
other employees or parties. The research should take the consent from all the respondents before
taking their answers. It must be well signed by the respondent. While conducting the research the
company should undertakes the following principles into mind:
