Research Topic: Assessing the impact of globalisation on the UK retail
industry economy. A research project on Tesco
Introduction
Globalisation has tend to lead an increased level of interconnectedness and enhanced
interdependence of countries and people at international level which comprises of opening of
international birders to support fast flow and movement of services, goods, ideas and people
(Ernst and Haar, 2019). This easy and flexible movement of goods and services along with
human being and technology has lead to many influence and impact on retail industry in form of
enhanced expansion opportunity along with higher competition level. Therefore, current
investigation is lead out on Tesco plc to analysis about the concept of globalisation along with
evaluating its impact on the retail industry within the economy of UK. Tesco Plc is a well known
British multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer which is having its main
headquarter in Welwyn Garden City, England, UK (Gauthier, 2019). Thus, Tesco is most
suitable organisation to evaluate about the impact of globalisation on retail industry. Further
current report consists of discussion about aim and objectives along with a brief literature review
and proposed methodology for conducting a research project.

What is meant by the concept of globalisation along with recent changes brought by
global economy?
What possible impact of globalisation could be seen on the retail industry within the
economy of UK.
Which can be taken as some effective strategies for Tesco plc to have wider
expansion opportunity and competitive strength in current global environment?
Brief Literature Review
This section provides analysis and review of secondary form to data to facilitates support
and base for investigation through leading systematic analysis of set topic and its objective (Hirst
and Thompson, 2019). The current literature review is based on the topic of globalisation along
with its impact on the retail industry for which various online article and journals are review, a
discussion and analysis of which is provided as below:
To review about the concept of globalisation along with recent changes brought by global
economy.
As per the view point of Ball, S. J., Junemann, C. and Santori, D., 2017, the concept of
globalisation is mainly associated and related with the speedup in the movement and exchange of
services, goods human being, capital and technologies across the various nation at global
economy. Further, it has been observed that the globalisation consists of a set of economic,
political, cultural and social process which has lead to and contribute in developing better
relationship between societies and communities around the world which ales it a progressive
process through exchange and flows of surplus resources to meet the intensified need of the
world. Beside this, It has been analysed and implicated that globalisation has accelerated the
global growth and tend to reduce the poverty reduction by the means of better flow and
movement of needed goods and services (Kirchmer, 2017).
Further, with respect to the information provided by Beer, A. and Clower, T. L., 2019, the
recent changes brought by global economy comprises of an improved level of technology lead
out by enhanced flow of IT and communication at global level that tend to have many positive
impacts on current economy development. Further, High level of investment opportunity in form
of enhanced flow of capital is also a change and effect lead out by globalisation. Apart from this,
the main change brought by globalisation consists of enhanced level of expansion opportunity

through improved communication and connection at international level along with high level of
competition that mainly prevails in global business environment. Thus, orgnisation needs to
make changes in there marketing strategy and promotion techniques to attract and cater larger
number of customers at global level along with mitigating the risk of high competition (Kresl,
2020).
To assess about the impact of globalisation on the retail industry within the economy of UK.
According to the view point of Chang, H.J., 2019, overall a positive impact is lead out by
globalisation on the retail industry within the economy of UK in form of enhanced expansion
opportunity and access to better technology and wider target market along with easy supply and
export and imports of product at global level. But still, some negative impact in form of high
competition and dynamic business environment is also faced by retail industry within the
economy if UK. A better discussion and analysis of impact lead out by globalisation on the retail
industry within the economy of UK are evaluated and provided as below.
Enhanced expansion opportunity- The one of the most positive impact of globalisation
consists of enhanced level of expansion opportunity for a retail business as it lead and support
easy trade across international level (Effects of Globalisation on the UK Economy, 2019). The
concept of globalisation lead to enhanced connection and interdependence among nation which
provides and lead out a wider target market for a retail industry at global level and in different
nation thus, lead to enhancement in the growth and expansion of retail industry of UK across
various nation.
Improved Productivity- The another positive impact of globalisation comprises of
improved productivity of retail industry by the way of leading easy import and export of goods
and other inventory in a much more easy and cost effective way through reduction in trade
barriers and formularies. Apart from this, access to improved technology is also provided and
facilitated by globalisation which also tends to have a positive impact in retail industry through
automation of its operation which impacted in form of improved productivity (Perraton, 2019).
Better supply of labour- The concept of globalisation is also vital and important to resolve
and overcome the issue of lack of competent labour and workforce seen within the retail industry
of UK by the means of easy flow and movement of employees which lead a positive impact in
form of ensuring a better supply of labour of retail industry of UK.

High level of competition- It is the only main negative impact of globalisation for retail
industry of UK as high level of competition creates many challenges and issues for retain
industry of UK (Sandhu, Shamsuzzoha and Helo, 2018). After globalisation, the retail
organisation have to face and survive in a global economy where they need to cope up and
survive with many big multinational company which has lead to huge pressure in the resources
and assets which is creating negative impact in overall performance and efficiency of small retail
organisation of UK.
To determine some effective strategies for Tesco plc to have wider expansion opportunity and
competitive strength in current global environment.
As per the opinion of Dieterle, D.A., 2020, an analysis can be that it is vital for retail
organisation to come up with some effective and better strategies to effectively operate at global
environment along with ensuring enhanced expansion opportunity and competitive. An analysis
of some of these effective strategies for Tesco plc to have wider expansion opportunity and
competitive strength in current global environment are evaluated and provided below:
Continuous market analysis- It is suggested for Tesco Plc to conduct regular market
analysis as it ensures and lead to better understanding of global economy and also facilitates
information about the areas where high scope of success for retail products are prevailing.
Further, regular market analysis also ensures and leads to timely information about the current
opportunity and threats that prevails within an international environment thus ensures better
corrective action and strategy formulation to grab opportunity and overcome threats in order to
have wider expansion opportunity and competitive strength (Turban and et.al., 2017).
Better promotion and marketing strategy- Implication of effective marketing strategy and
online promotional tool are also a vital strategy that can be adopted to wider expansion
opportunity and competitive strength at global economy by the way of having better interaction
and communication with customers at global level (Sutcliffe and Glyn, 2019). An analysis can be
made out that the use of social media and other digital platforms leads to a more attractive
promotion to cater the interest of larger number of customers thus leads to have wider expansion
opportunity and competitive strength in current global environment.

Justification and contextualization
The conduction and leading out of current investigation is important and justifiable as the
concept of globalisation has made the business environment more dynamic and complex that
lead many changes and impacts on retailer industry. Thus, conduction and leading out of current
investigation based on concept of globalisation along with evaluating its impact on the retail
industry is important and vital (Vahlne and Jonsson, 2017). Further, the important findings that is
evaluated through current assignment consists of effective strategies which can be adopted by
any company have wider expansion opportunity and competitive strength in current global
environment. Thus, the current investigation is vital and significant from view point of retail
industry as it focus on the main changes and impact lead out by globalisation along with ensuring
analysis of vital set of strategies that would support and lead out better strategy formulation to
have improved productivity and growth at global level. The current research project is helpful in
building in existing body if evidence with the help of analyses and evaluation of new data and
better perception on the selected topic of impact of globalisation on the UK retail industry
economy (Ernst and Haar, 2019).
Further, implication and use of research onion model is made to build on the existing body
of evidence as it facilitates and ensures systematic presentation of all methods and approaches in
form of various layers and also supports selection of most suitable research method as per nature
of study through providing suitable justifications for their selection. Apart from this, to ensure
timely completion and meeting of set objective in timely manner use and implication of Gantt
chart and most viable and efficient set of research method are made for data collection and
analysis (Gauthier, 2019). Beside this, the current research project ensures meeting of existing
needs of retail industry of UK by the way of analysis about the impact of globalisation on the
retail industry within the economy of UK and recent changes brought by it on global economy
along with facilitating information about some effective strategies to have wider expansion
opportunity and competitive strength in current global environment.
Research Methodology
This section of research proposal forms a vital part as it facilitates and provides all the main
required information about the proposed research methodology that lead to most effective
collection of data and support performing of a study in most effective and viable manner. To
ensure use of most appropriate and viable set of research methods, use and implication of

research onion model is made (Hirst and Thompson, 2019). The information about the various
layers of resrch methodology along with selection of viable set of research method and
approaches are provided as below:
Figure 1: Research onion, 2020
Research paradigm- This represent the very first layer of research onion model
underpinning and exploring the philosophical paradigms of a study which comprises and
bifurcated into four main types and forms. These four types of research philosophy and
pragmatism consists of positivism, interpretivism, realism and pragmatism as major forms of
research paradigm. Out of these four set of research Philosophy, use and implication of
positivisms research philosophy is most suitable and viable for current investigation on Tesco.
The justification for utilisation of Positivism research philosophy is based on the evidence that it
facilitates and ensures most practical ad systematic way of investigation to accomplish and
achieve set objective in most effective and viable manner (Kirchmer, 2017).
Research approach- There are two common set and form of research approach which
consists of inductive and deductive approach out of which deductive approach is used in
coordination with positivism philosophy where as inductive in used in line with interpretivism
philosophy. With respect to current investigation the is based on positivistic philosophy use of
deductive approach is appropriate to support a numeric or objective nature of research. Apart
from this, selection of deductive approach is suitable for current investigation as it is concerned
with developing theory based on some existing facts and support designing of a research in more
efficient way better testing and scanning of set objectives in light of existing theory (Kresl,
2020).

Research strategy- This section of methodology tend to form a vital part of research as it
lead out a base and framework for entire investigation through facilitating better planning,
existing and monitoring of study. The various types and forms of research strategy comprises of
action research, experimental research, interviews, surveys, case study and many more out of
which selection and use of survey strategy of research is most suitable for current investigation.
The utilisation of survey strategy is justifiable for current investigation as it is most cost effective
along with most reliable in terms of generalizability which consists of collection of data with the
help of questionnaire thus, facilitates most time and cost effective way of data collection
(Perraton, 2019).
Choices of method- There are two most common and mainly used form of research method
comprises of qualitative and quantitative research method which are procured by a researcher to
undertake a research. Out of these, qualitative method is related with theoretical or in-depth form
of research that is comparatively more time consuming and complex is nature. Therefore, use of
qualitative research method is not appropriate. On the other hand, the quantitative nature of
research method is based on objective form of study which comprises of collection of data in
numeric or arithmetic form which is more easy to collect and present (Sandhu, Shamsuzzoha and
Helo, 2018). The justification for selection of quantitative set of research method is based on the
fact that the numeric facts gathered through this research work are much more easier to present
and facilitate a more clear and better analysis and interpretation of fact which support and leads
to more measurable and specific set of research outcomes and results.
Time Horizons- Basically there are two main set of time horizons comprises of cross section
time horizons along with longitudinal time horizons. Out of these two the longitudinal horizons
implies in reflecting and showing observation related to a particular variable in accordance with
several years and quarters, thus, based on long duration therefore not much viable and suitable
for current investigation. Use and implication of cross sectional time horizons are more
appropriate to reflect all set observations and activities of research at a single time through
making use of time management tools like Gantt Chart that is provided as below:

Data collection and analysis- There are two main origin and sources of data from where
data could be collected by a research which are named as primary and secondary sources of data.
To ensure availability of significant information and data for current investigation, use of both
primary as well as secondary sources of data would have been made for current investigation.
The use of primary set of data is appropriate for current investigation as it ensures and leads to
collection of data directly from the currently selected respondents (Sutcliffe and Glyn, 2019).
Thus, mitigate and reduces the chances of obsolete and biasness which ensures most authentic
and reliable set of information to draw a valid decision and research outcome. Apart from this,
use of secondary source of data is also appropriate as it facilitates a base and better direction for
further research through leading review of pre-existing information that is easily available in
form of books, articles, magazines, journals, etc.
With respect to current investigation primary data would be collected with the help of
questionnaire as the research tool for directly collecting information from selected participants
where as secondary data would be collected from online article and journals. Analysis of primary
set of quantitative data would be made with the help of statistical charts and frequency table
where as secondary data would get analysed through the use of systematic literature review.

Sample size and target population- The selected size of sample and population for currency
investigation is 50 employees from the employees of Tesco that are selected with the help of
random sampling method. The target population for current investigation are the employees,
managers and all other related stakeholders of Tesco plc that have interest in knowing the impact
of globalisation on retail Industry of UK.
Access and ethics- In order to maintain the authenticity and viability of collected data, only
researcher and tutor is given accessibility to collected data. Further, implication of provision of
BERA code of ethics along with data protection act is also been made to overcome all ethical
issues related with privacy and authenticity of collected data. Beside this, a prior approval and
consent is also taken from all selected participants to perform current investigation in most
ethical form.
Research limitation- The main limitation that can be encountered during current
investigation consist of lack of time along with availability of insufficient resources. To
overcome the issue of lack of time, use of effective time management tool i.e. Gantt chart is
made. Further, to resolve and overcome the issue of insufficient resources use of most efficient
and viable set of research methods are made to have proper use of limited resources in most
efficient and viable manner.
