In the last few years, it has been argued that globalization has a vital effect on state
sovereignty. Sovereignty is for state to have supreme power or authority on its citizen. It helps in
protecting people of state from any foreign power. However, in the era of globalization where
integration and interaction among the people, businesses and companies have become driven by
international trade, sovereignty seems to be affected by it. The paper aims to discuss the effect of
globalization on sovereignty of the state.
Since the year 1945, the normative framework of human right seems to feel a sense of
obligation on state’s part towards their citizen due to globalization (Donnelly and Whelan 2017).
Although the social contract holds a vital part that is concerned with the welfare of the citizen, it
has limited the ranges of policy choices for the state. This specific phenomenon has reduced the
state’s capacity to meet the obligations. Although sovereignty is the absolute authority over the
state, it has been argued that it is challenged by several forces that operate beyond the control of
state. Such forces involve challenges of climatic changes, the threats of global terrorism, the
power of specific international countries along with their organizations and policies to influence
the global market and related (Woodley 2015).
In the globalization era, individuals are more mobile, independent, protected and
international (Williamson, Imbroscio and Alperovitz 2014). Therefore, although international
organizations are not under the policy making, they are crucial influencers of policy making.
Considering the factors mentioned above, the fact can be traced that it is the capitalism that have
changed the nature of state sovereignty. The globalization is initiated and driven by the
international trades dominated by the worldwide capitalists. This limits the capacity of state
which can be understood from an active as well as reactive process. The active process involves
the way formulating policy in favor of market principles that is encouraged by globalization. The

reactive process involves the responses that occur from booms, shocks and crisis in the global
economy. In active as well as reactive process states do not hold the entire freedom or entire
sovereignty in order to enact any forms of policy that is only of their own determination
(Goodhart 2013).
Although it is believed that sovereignty is an illusion in the era of globalization, it is also
perceived to be a way to make state better laws. It gives the opportunity to implement new
system of protection while encouraging positive human rights. Every international relation is
made on the basis of other state’s laws and policies. Therefore, globalization may not be a
negative effect on sovereignty of the states.
As discussed above, globalization has a vital effect on state sovereignty. State is certainly
limited with their powers due to the growth in capitalist power globally. It is important for the
state to come up with innovative ideas and plans that would satisfy all the parties the state, trade
organizations as well as the common citizens.
