Selected goal
Setting goals is an essential part of my life. I have always been a person who sets long term and
short term goals. This helps me in staying organized and allows me to chalk out a clear path for
my future endeavours. My selected goal which is aim to accomplish within the next twelve
month is getting a job as a marketing executive with Ecommerce giant Amazon.com Inc. The
journey of Amazon that began from Jeff Bezos’s garage to becoming the world’s leading
Ecommerce firm has been enticing as well as absolutely inspirational. I often come across
interviews of Amazon employees as well as their leader Mr. Bezos. They give me a deeper
insight about the work culture and the environment at Amazon and I believe that working in such
a firm would provide me a platform to enhance my learning and growth. Also, I have always
been interested in the field of marketing. The advertisements and other promotional strategies of
Amazon have always been innovative. As an individual, I believe that I would be able to
productively contribute to that team as well as learn from their expertise and experience. Hence
getting a job as a marketing executive with Amazon Inc. is my goal.
SMART goal
In order for an individual or an organization to accomplish a goal, it is largely recommended that
the goal is SMART. This means that the goal is specific, measurable, attainable, realist and time
bound. My goal of being recruited in the marketing team of Amazon is a SMART goal. The goal
is specific as I am clearly aware about the job role as well as the organization that I wish to work
in. I am currently in the final year of my MBA (Masters of business administration). Once I
complete this course, I would be in a better position to look for a job and I would fulfil the
minimum requirements as defined by Amazon in order to work with the firm. Amazon is a

growing company and introduces various marketing and sales roles to potential candidates every
year. The jobs postings are made available on their official website making it easy for interested
candidates to be aware of the available job openings. The goal is realistic in nature because
Amazon recruits and prefers freshers straight from MBA colleges. Also, I have been preparing
for my interview as well as a job very much in advance. Twelve months is the time that I have
set for myself in order to achieve this goal.
Goal setting theory
The process of goal setting involves development of a plan of action which is aimed at achieving
a specific goal. Goal setting theory helps individuals as well as organizations in achieving their
goals in an organized manner. If applied effectively, the goal setting theory, instils a sense of
discipline and responsibility and hence makes it easier to achieve goals. According to Beal
(2017), Goal setting theory is often used by organization as a form of intrinsic motivation among
people. Goals that are well defined and SMART motivate people. Employees put additional
efforts towards achieving their goals and this leads to an overall improvement in their
performance. Clear goals also ensure that employees use their time more effectively leading to
improved overall productivity.
Goal setting theory has also been known to offer a solution to identity crisis faced by people
(Greco & Kraimer, 2018). Specific goals when given to employees give a boost to an employee’s
self-esteem. When managers offer difficult goals to employees, employees tend to work harder
to achieve them because they believe that difficult goals are a sign of trust that their managers
bestow upon them. This also leads to an improved level of job satisfaction.

It is believed that a goal setting theory works even better if there is a mediator involved. This is
can be a peer, a manager or a senior (Latham & Ashroff, 2015). The role of a mediator is to
ensure that a right path is being adopted in order to achieve goals. The mediator must also
continue to offer consistent motivation so that the goal is achieved in an efficient manner. The
mediator should someone that the individual can celebrate with upon accomplishment of the
goal.
Coaching plan
In order to achieve my goal, I have been actively preparing. A few of my seniors got recruited
with Amazon a couple of years back. So I contacted them in order to understand the recruitment
process better. One of them recommended me a book and I have started reading it. Besides this, I
make sure I keep myself aware about the happenings in the Ecommerce industry. I frequently
keep checking the Amazon website so that I am aware of the job openings as and when it comes.
I consistently work upon my communication skills because that is a prerequisite for any
marketing job.
I have a major stage fear since a long time and I wish to overcome it in the given span of twelve
months. Since this can be a major hindrance for me in the process of achieving my goals. In
order to overcome this, I am trying to be more participative during class presentations. I would
like to ask myself if I would be willing to work with Amazon if they were to offer me a role in a
different country. I have not yet decided upon it. I also need to give thought to a plan B if I do
not get a job with Amazon. Would I stick to the same industry and profile or would I change my
field altogether? As of now I am moving towards achieving my goal by continuous reading and
