Goonyella Riverside is a large open cut coking coal mine in the Bowen Basin. It is one of the
many coal mines in Central Queensland and is located at Moranbah about 30 Km north of the
township.
1971 Goonyella Mine commenced operation,
owned by CQCA joint ventures, managed by
Utah Development Co.
1982 Riverside Mine commenced operation, owned
by Thiess Dampier Mitsui, managed by BHP
1984 BHP purchased Utah International Inc., thus
major interest in both Goonyella and
Riverside
1989 CQCA’s Goonyella and BHP Mitsui’s
Riverside Mines management amalgamated,
to give improved operation while retaining
separate ownership
2000 Formal adoption of One Mine Plan enabling
optimum use of all site resources – people,
equipment and coal

The mine produced 12.4Mta of metallurgical coal in the year to July 2014, and output in the
current financial would not affected by the contract termination (Harvey,2015). Emily Perry said
