Personal Statement
My personal motto is expressed best by the words of Shaquille O’Neal, “Excellence is not a
singular act, but a habit. You are what you repeatedly do.” I am a passionate person who
always strives for excellence. Also, I am a self-motivated and active person with a scientific
interest in medical laboratory science. I graduated from King Saud University, Saudi Arabia, in
Clinical Laboratory Science with GPA 4.23(Out of 5); I concentrated on the theoretical and
technical backgrounds of many subjects in the field of Medical Laboratory Science. My interest
in the field of Medical laboratory science stems from the many research laboratories and
opportunities in my country. These facilities have inspired my interest in pursuing higher
education and a career as a clinical laboratory specialist. Ultimately, I dream of the day when I
can utilize my skills and knowledge to improve health education, research, and disease
prevention in Saudi Arabia.
As the next step toward my goal of becoming a unique contributor to health sciences and my
community, I seek to join the University of Rhode Island (URI) graduate program in Medical
Laboratory Science. My personal background, academic accomplishments, professional
development activities and my intensive English courses for non-native English speakers thus
far have prepared me to take on the advanced courses at URI. Medical Laboratory Science
fascinates me the most, because the sciences allowed me to take many different courses across
biological sciences that demand cogent logical analysis and creative thinking.
In order to gain practical experience in my field, I conducted many research projects in my
undergraduate program. My graduation research project was my most inspiring research
experience. I researched hemolytic disease and its effect on newborns and fetuses, giving me
the desire to explore more in Immunology. Upon completion of my undergraduate studies, I
undertook a one-year internship at Prince Sultan Military Medical City (PSMMC) in Riyadh,
Saudi Arabia, as a Medical Specialist. This internship program provided an excellent opportunity
to apply the knowledge and skills gained during my undergraduate studies. During my
internship, and because of my hard work, the laboratory staff perceived me positively, and they
offered me a permanent job.
Upon completion of my internship, I accepted an employment offer at Prince Mohammed bin
Abdul-Aziz Hospital. This professional experience was one of the key factors that led me to
pursue graduate studies in the field of Medical Laboratory Science. While working at Prince
Mohammed bin Abdul-Aziz Hospital, the opportunity to work as a Teaching Assistant at King
Saud University (KSU) presented itself, and I accepted it without hesitation knowing that it
would allow me to learn more about my passion, and it would help me to achieve my goal of
getting a scholarship to support my postgraduate studies in Medical Laboratory Science. So, as
a Teaching Assistant at KSU, the Ministry of Higher Education in Saudi Arabia is sponsoring me
with a full scholarship for my Master’s degree and this funding will continue into doctoral

research, which is my ultimate goal. In my free time, I also volunteered at the Saudi Society for
Clinical Laboratory Sciences where I have been a member for two years.
After I completed my postgraduate studies, I intend to return to King Saud University to
conduct research and teach. It is of key importance for me to have opportunities to obtain an
excellent education and to participate in research projects to achieve my long-term goals. With
its high standards of academic and professional excellence, I believe that URI will play a
significant role in achieving my goals.
URI provides strong courses in Medical Laboratory Science. While I was searching for a program
that best suits me, I was focusing on programs that specifically geared to Immunology,
Microbiology, and Biochemistry. Although many universities offer Master’s in MLS, few of them
offers a program, which specifically focused in Immunology, Microbiology, and Biochemistry.
Currently, URI is one of the few universities offering a degree in this filed. Additionally, I was
pleased to discover that Professor Gregory E. Paquette, who is researching diagnostic
microbiology and teaching, advanced Immunology at which I have concentrated, is a member
of the URI MLS faculty. I would love the opportunity to work closely with Prof. Paquette and the
other faculty members in order to enhance my skills. In conclusion, I would say that I would
regard my admission to URI not only as great honour and success but also as an obligation to
hard work and dedication. The excellence of your program – along with my interest and
motivation – will help me accomplish my goals at URI.
Finally, I chose URI as the place that I could continue to grow in the excellence that I always
strive to obtain. I sincerely hope that URI selects me to be part of this outstanding program.
