This report, submitted to the Open University of Sri Lanka for the PG Diploma/MA in Teaching English as a Second Language, ELP 1101, critically examines the teaching of grammar and the four language skills. Part 1 analyzes a reading comprehension task from a textbook, evaluating its strengths and limitations based on reading theories. Part 2 develops an alternative reading comprehension task for the same reading passage, providing a rationale for the chosen tasks based on reading theories and the target student group. Part 3 describes a teaching/learning session using the alternative task, detailing the planning and implementation of the lesson, focusing on grammar checking activities and comprehension skills for Class 9 students, involving two teachers and eight students. The report emphasizes vocabulary development, error analysis, and practical application of grammar skills, providing a detailed lesson plan for enhancing reading comprehension and grammar proficiency.
